No matter where he ends up playing on field, he will be a very very good footballer.

If he's gone and Robertson is still there, has to be Robertson. Can get the nut.

I would then pair Garcia with him late.

McAsey makes things interesting. I don’t think he should make it outside the top 10. The draft just isnt strong enough to overlook a key defender who looks pretty reliable.

But circumstances make it fascinating because I’d say Melb and Freo would really want a runner (Ash/Stephens). And we don’t want a KPp. Which puts the Hawks in the box seat....but others are apparently keen. Those others will have to get above the Hawks, who I doubt will trade up (would lose too many points for a bid on Maginess).

Which leaves the logical scenario being: two live trades.

Blues bid on Henry. Freo trade 10 down with GC for 15 and 20. The second pick being higher and the total points is the best outcome for Freo. 15 on its own basically matches Henry and they are left with 20 (from GC) and 22 (their own). That’s a better outcome than they could get trading with Cats (second pick would be 24).

Freo then match bid with their newly acquired 15. Cats then offer us 14 and 24 to get ahead of Hawks. Unless Stephens is there we take it. Cats take McAsey at 10. We knew they’d do that. 3 live picks until our 14.

We take it unless Stephens drops to us. They take McAsey.

The spanner in the works is GWS. I just don’t see them keeping 6. So they either trade up with Adelaide throwing future first in and for whatever weird reason both clubs are ok with that (bad for both in my view). Or more likely - gWS having missed on their real target and reason for trading up to 6 (Jackson) trade back down.....with GC. Thereby stuffing up my theory above!

Do GC offer 15 and next years 11 to trump all parties and get 6? Pretty amazing haul for GWS to only use 15 and 40 on Green, and come out of it with 11 next year, keeping their first next year. And why wouldn’t GC? Pick up 3 kids inside 6, using a gifted pick to do so.

So, that’s what happens. In my humble view. And therefore presents a very interesting problem for Freo. Because the Cats would rather our 9 than their 10. And if the GC trade down is gone, then who does Freo trade down with if a bid comes for Henry? All of which I suspect gets sorted with a bit of draft tampering...

Oh wasn’t meaning anything other than some at several points thought that would be overpaying. It def wouldn’t have been now I know this crop better. IMO.

Some thoughts on the last few pages:

- No to Serong due to mobility, very flat-footed Robbie Gray clone
- Yes to Kemp on potential, more mobile and a better kick than Fyfe, but game sense will need to grow (as will the tissue where his ACL should be)
- Ash is solid, but if Williams and Docherty are recovered, it really skews our list balance for a couple of years at least; we'd want guarantees that Ash could be productive on a wing
- Trading down remains tempting, but we are just inside the top tier talent range

Because we want to pick up Williams, Gould, Taheny and Rivers later on.

Ignoring that it would take a bit of wrangling and perhaps a future 2nd to make this happen, why focus on Rivers and Williams? Rivers makes good decisions, but I doubt he plays midfield at the next level on what I've seen.

Williams has the straight line speed and loves to attack the footy in the air, but he needs so much work on everything else, especially for a top 30 pick, and doubly so when you're eyeing off Taheny.

I actually like Garcia and he was having a good game before he went down with his acl, I think from memory it was the first quarter and he had about 9 touches already when he went down, also another WA boy which the club seems to like, as do I.

The player I like at 43 if we end up keeping it is Ryan Byrnes who is a good contested ball winner as well as having a decent outside game as well, captained the Sandy Dragons this year and finished top 10 in the 2km time trial at the combine and I think he is very under rated and will turn out to be a bargain at 43 if still available. The other ones would be Sam Philp and Brady Rowles both would be good gets at 43.

Agree on Serong, just doesn’t have the electricity you want as a forward. Not a fan of adding an undersized mid to our list either. Unless they think if he sheds 10kg it will improve.

Ben Ainsworth was as close to a Robbie gray as you’re going to get. Was a better prospect as an 18 y/o and he hasn’t exactly set the world on fire. He may yet still, and I acknowledge gc aren’t the greatest in terms of development.

For me I just see Serong as a less athletic, with slightly more midfield ability and slightly less forward game.

Think Serong will slide to around 16-18

Wowee, just read on the AFL site that Dougal Howard got lapped by the top 2 in the Saints 3km time trial, doesn’t say much for his endurance or the program at Port if that is the case, Saints would have to be disappointed with that result.

Melbourne paid overs to move up the draft order this year, just to move back down again? It's possible, but any net gain wouldn't be enough for them to have planned this as a strategy with so many variables imo.

I think they'll keep their picks and be happy to take two prospects that they probably rate in the top ~6.

It seemed like the worst trade in history at the time. Maybe there was a reason they did it. Or maybe it was the worst trade in history.

Now that they have dealt with the Lions for (#16), dont be surprised to see them come for 9.

If we can downgrade for 2 picks that could net us Schoenberg and someone else like a Pickett, Gould etc, I’d be all for that.

I’ve followed it a lot less this year but Schoenberg looks the goods from my limited viewing. No one who is tipped to be available at 9 looking any better so far.

I think Williamson is now on a track to becoming tall utility who can play at the clearances, given the way he's putting on muscle. He might slim down while trying to maintain the strength he's gained in his back and hamstrings, but it seems more likely he's going to lose the ability to go on regular long, searching runs, and instead be more of a burst player in that respect.

Part of me hopes I'm wrong, but conversely I'm not sure his career would last a whole lot longer without the change.

He was an absolute beast in the mids as a younger fella, but I'm guessing that can be said for most non-key position AFL players.

I’m just not sure where he fits into the backline in the future and that’s why I don’t think he should come into consideration when we are rating Ash without even considering his injury history. Ash will be asked to play on the smalls, especially early on in his career, I don’t think this will be Williamson’s go. With Doc and Newman turning 27 next year by the time they are nearing the end Ash will be ready to take more responsibility and more of a rebounding role.
