List Mgmt. Pick 9

Adelaide aren't sniffing around Stephens? I'd be all over him if I were them.

Well of course no-one can be certain yet. But according to him in an article i just read, they are keen on McAsey and Flanders. I'd be surprised if Stephens went before our pick. I have him ranked at 13. I'd say our 9 is his earliest landing point. He makes some sense at all of us, Freo at 10, Hawks at 11 and Port at 12.

1. Rowell
2. Anderson
3. Melb L.Jackson
4. GWS H.Young
5. GWS T.Green
6. Syd S.Flanders or C.Serong
7. Ade F.McAsey or S.Flanders

That seems to be the feeling at the moment from Bishop, and i agree. Also he thinks either Melb or us could trade down for 2 picks to get Ky Pickett. Which must mean Bulldogs are set on Bergman. Maybe Kemp or trade down for us if Melb take their pick 8.

Things are starting to shape up. Twomey should have some decent mail tomorrow. Think he's doing a 1st Rd Phantom.
What about 9 (will be 10) for 12 (will be 13) and 29 with Port?

Did you watch the SANFL Reserves Grand Final?

The thing I like about this is they must have agreed with GwS what the gws priorities are. And are comfortable that doesn’t disrupt them. We see it as ‘trading down 2’ and it will appear as 3 on the night of Sydney bid on Green.

But in reality they knew and didn’t want the player gws take at 4 and could never get green anyway.

Means in their mind they drop 1. So they have 2 in mind. And get one guaranteed.

Good deal.

No i didn't. But apparently Stephens played well in it. I gather you did watch it and liked him. Which is absolutely fine. He is a good player.
Only asking because I changed my mind after that. He played on ball. He was moving a lot better (I couldn’t work out why until today - he carried a groin through the champs). He was seriously effervescent. Everyone talks about his weight but I’m less worried about that. Have an ever so slight question mark on his hands below knees. Not major. Just a watch point.

Overall I’d be stunned if he isn’t a 200 game on baller. Not ‘wing’. On ball. He’s quick and agile. Will accumulate through the middle. Sub 3 second 20m 6 min 2km athletes are rare. He’s an athlete that can play footy. He hunts the ball. Works hard both ways. He’s slightly lighter than Walsh. He will be fine build wise in time. He will play a lot next year.

I really like him. He’s not perfect but he’s pretty bomb proof.

I will be completely blown away if a kid who does very well at Senior SANFL level with his attributes is ignored by Adelaide, Freo and then Melb in THIS draft.

Like blown away

I must be missing something, because I just can't get my head around taking Kemp at this selection. Not sure where he fits long-term.

Robertson I can see though I am very happy with the young midfield brigade we have coming through already. His game reminds me of Lachie Neale.

A week out and I am still very much on the Stephens bandwagon, with Ash a very nice consolation prize.

I don't think Stephens has any intangibles. Maybe a tank, but most onballers at AFL have that. Robertson i think has the intangible of genuine leadership and coalface ball winning and can largely match Stephens tank. Both have speed and agility.

This is how i sorta see it in a crude comparison matchup sense.

Stephens i see as a Polec/Ollie Florent player at his best. A James Aish/Lochie O'Brien type in the middle. And a Kane Lucas/Kane Tenace at worst.

Robertson i see as a Sloane/Cal Ward player at his best. A Liam Shiels/Ed Curnow in the middle. And a Luke Dunstan at worst.

I'd take all the Robertson options over the Stephens options.

Just a rough bit of brainstormin for the convo of the potential of both. All JIMHO of course.

I'm starting to see Kemp as a bit of a Tomlinson.

That would be very appealing for SOS, but maybe not exactly what's best suited for the CFC.

I'm likely wrong as everyone says otherwise, but Ash seems a little ordinary to me.

Yes, he has a nice run but somehow I'm not seeing it at AFL level. Just one of those things.

He's remarkably similar to Fyfe, but has more speed, and would have more flexibility if he doesn't pack the kilos on.

Here's how it would look, assuming something like TDK as ruck:

FB: Plowman Jones Marchbank
HB: Docherty Weitering Williamson
C: Walsh Setterfield O'Brien
HF: Cuningham C.Curnow Fisher
FF: McGovern McKay Owies*

R: TDK Cripps Kemp

Int: SPS, Dow, Stocker*, JSOS*

Kemp would be a unique point of difference in that mix, and probably more flexible in taking up a defensive post if required, but he's a midfielder first and foremost.

I dont think the clubs generally give a fu** about how a deal will look for the opposition.
If they see an opportunity to improve their own position, they'll do the deal.
My issue is that all clubs are content with making GWS stronger. Clubs just give in to what the Giants are doing.
Last season's Grand Finalists add 2 top 5 players and Cognilio and a fit Davis to their side. They are going to be very good for a long time.
Adelaide by doing the trade with GWS may eventually end up with a pick in the mid 20's by the time all the academy and father sons are done

We would have done our homework on Kemp because he trained with us in part of the preseason. If it wasn't for the ACL, he'd be vying for the top 3 and very few would be arguing the point. I hope he's still there and we don't get cold feet, otherwise, I'd be trading down.

I dont think the club's are 'giving in' as such, they aren't stupid, they'll only do deals if there is benefit to them.
If the GWS make an offer to a club, they can also say 'no' if it doesnt suit them.. but I agree with you that the GWS are savvy traders.

So what do the Pick Swaps this week mean for our Pick 9?

GWS now has Pick 4 and seemingly gets a highly rated prospect before a likely bid on Green
Adelaide now has Pick 6
Fremantle Picks 7, 10 and 22
Port has Picks 12, 16 and 18
Geelong has 14, 17 and 24
Suns have 1,2, 15 and 20

Before the Pick swaps it was looking something like (With thanks to KM - but I’m not picking Serong with 2 of Kemp / Robertson / D Stephens on the board):

Suns Rowell
Suns Anderson
Mel Jackson
Adel Young
GWS Green (matching Syd)
Syd Flanders
Fre Robertson / D Stephens
Mel Ash
Fre Henry (matching Car)
Car D Stephens / Robertson / Kemp / Serong ...

GWS I think on a needs basis takes Young or Ash at Pick 4. Adelaide may well take the other one at 6, or perhaps D Stephens.
If Ash is gone by Melbourne’s Pick 8, they might bid on Henry before taking one that would have been there at our Pick ...

I think Port, Geelong or Suns comes hard for our Pick (who wants to get ahead of Hawks for McAsey or perhaps Hawks trade up to make sure? I think Port, Geelong, Suns, Bulldogs and Hawks will all want our Pick). If SOS is happy to trade down, I think it involves getting a future first (say upgrading our future second). So something like 9 for 14 as well as Geelong’s future first for our future second.

How clubs actually go about picking which kids they want seem to be a very interesting process. I was chatting to a dad of a draft nominee who said his son had done a few interviews with the Blues, and that the club is relatively keen. The last interview he did at Ikon Park was.... mucking around playing indoor cricket in the office. SOS was in slips. The kid wasn't sure whether to go his hardest or let the guys win. Bizarre.

But I guess to outsider nobodies like myself, we see none of what really goes on. They have probably been working with these kids for years, know them all pretty well, etc.

If it falls like that we should do a deal with Freo for 10 + 22, most likely leaving us with a choice between Kemp, Stephens or Serong.

We shouldn’t be looking to move out of the top 12 otherwise, there’s a reason clubs are desperate to get in.

In fairness SOS thought that was his last day on the job at the time.

if we could somehow end up with a stephens and pickett or kemp and pickett combo, i would .... I have no idea what I would do.

If that was me I’d be going my hardest, clearly an innocent and fun activity to see how competitive he is

Emma Quayle's was always the best one though. She got some seriously good mail.
