How clubs actually go about picking which kids they want seem to be a very interesting process. I was chatting to a dad of a draft nominee who said his son had done a few interviews with the Blues, and that the club is relatively keen. The last interview he did at Ikon Park was.... mucking around playing indoor cricket in the office. SOS was in slips. The kid wasn't sure whether to go his hardest or let the guys win. Bizarre.

But I guess to outsider nobodies like myself, we see none of what really goes on. They have probably been working with these kids for years, know them all pretty well, etc.

Good way to get some extra insight into a kid.

In addition to seeing how competitive they get, it probably serves to distract them from whatever "scripted" answers they may have had in their head and get more instinctive responses.

Also wouldn't be surprised if things like that, as well as Teague's very active involvement in interviews and significant interest shown in the players themselves, are about lifting the profile of the club amongst the player community. Get them remembering their discussions with Carlton as really positive and enjoyable, so that if a potential move presents down the line we're a club they want to talk to. Might not seem like much, but doesn't take much effort and could pay off big time in the long term.

Is it worse when they do there knees without contact like Kemp did, avoiding a tackle?

I would personally be less worried if a truck hit his knee in a freak accident tearing the ACL, but if its in general movements that he'll have to do 10k times a season that worse yeah?

If you had to pick one - contact ACLs are preferrable. However, I'm not sure on whether or not they would be more frequent going forward.

There's probably more of a psychological component with non-contact ACLs.

He (Kemp) needs to just spend the summer/first part of next year lifting heaving and getting as strong as possible in his hips and legs, particularly the glutes and hamstrings.

1. Rowell
2. Anderson
3. Melb L.Jackson
4. GWS H.Young
5. GWS T.Green
6. Syd S.Flanders or C.Serong
7. Ade F.McAsey or S.Flanders

That seems to be the feeling at the moment from Bishop, and i agree. Also he thinks either Melb or us could trade down for 2 picks to get Ky Pickett. Which must mean Bulldogs are set on Bergman. Maybe Kemp or trade down for us if Melb take their pick 8.

Things are starting to shape up. Twomey should have some decent mail tomorrow. Think he's doing a 1st Rd Phantom.
Who do you reckon we will trade down with tw if we do, Geelong at 14, 17 & 24 would be good and they would love to get inside a pick for McAsey, Port now have 12, 16 & 18 ideally 12 &18 would be nice and still leaves them with 9 & 16, best case is Freo with 10 & 22 will be an interesting draft that’s for sure.

Am looking at this correctly regarding the GWS and Adelaide trade of picks?

We are now likely to slip from Pick 9 to Pick 10 now that Giants have traded up and will probably only need to use late picks for green? it effectively takes another player of the board at our selection.

I also struggle to to how GWS match green, with only picks 40,59 and 60, with and points value. Deficit will be approx 1000 points after discount. They will wipe out their entire draft hand in 2020 considering they have already traded away next years 1st.

We would have done our homework on Kemp because he trained with us in part of the preseason. If it wasn't for the ACL, he'd be vying for the top 3 and very few would be arguing the point. I hope he's still there and we don't get cold feet, otherwise, I'd be trading down.

Apparently Kemp just did another medical so I’m sure we and others would have a good grasp on where he is at with his knee.

Is there any chance Melbourne bid on Green at 3?

They kept Sydney pretty honest with Heeney

If it falls like that we should do a deal with Freo for 10 + 22, most likely leaving us with a choice between Kemp, Stephens or Serong.

We shouldn’t be looking to move out of the top 12 otherwise, there’s a reason clubs are desperate to get in.
So what do the Pick Swaps this week mean for our Pick 9?

GWS now has Pick 4 and seemingly gets a highly rated prospect before a likely bid on Green
Adelaide now has Pick 6
Fremantle Picks 7, 10 and 22
Port has Picks 12, 16 and 18
Geelong has 14, 17 and 24
Suns have 1,2, 15 and 20

Before the Pick swaps it was looking something like (With thanks to KM - but I’m not picking Serong with 2 of Kemp / Robertson / D Stephens on the board):

Suns Rowell
Suns Anderson
Mel Jackson
Adel Young
GWS Green (matching Syd)
Syd Flanders
Fre Robertson / D Stephens
Mel Ash
Fre Henry (matching Car)
Car D Stephens / Robertson / Kemp / Serong ...

GWS I think on a needs basis takes Young or Ash at Pick 4. Adelaide may well take the other one at 6, or perhaps D Stephens.
If Ash is gone by Melbourne’s Pick 8, they might bid on Henry before taking one that would have been there at our Pick ...

I think Port, Geelong or Suns comes hard for our Pick (who wants to get ahead of Hawks for McAsey or perhaps Hawks trade up to make sure? I think Port, Geelong, Suns, Bulldogs and Hawks will all want our Pick). If SOS is happy to trade down, I think it involves getting a future first (say upgrading our future second). So something like 9 for 14 as well as Geelong’s future first for our future second.

If Melb or Us are going to bid on Henry Freo would look to do a trade with the bidding club imo, or look to trade down with someone else.

I’m guessing his new phantom guide.
Just says that we’ve been strongly linked. Also links Serrong and Stephens

Scroll on down to Pickett at number 30, watch the clip they've included.

Described as a "bump", but just looks like he spear-tackled a bloke who didn't have the ball?

Gut says no. If they knocked back offers from GWS to get Pick 3, it's because they have a specific player they want. Too much risk in bidding on Green in that scenario, given he's not really what they need anyway.

Feels very early for Jackson, but when you look at the evenness of the draft, I suppose it makes sense to pull the trigger on one of the bigger point of difference players available. They'll still get a really handy small/mid with their other top 10 pick.

Doubt they care, they're still overflowing with talent. They're chasing a flag in the next few years, so they'll happily churn some picks to keep topping up with 1-2 elite players each year, and there will always be a cap squeeze for them to manage which will replenish some of those picks anyway via trade or free agency compo.

He's remarkably similar to Fyfe, but has more speed, and would have more flexibility if he doesn't pack the kilos on.

Here's how it would look, assuming something like TDK as ruck:

FB: Plowman Jones Marchbank
HB: Docherty Weitering Williamson
C: Walsh Setterfield O'Brien
HF: Cuningham C.Curnow Fisher
FF: McGovern McKay Owies*

R: TDK Cripps Kemp

Int: SPS, Dow, Stocker*, JSOS*

Kemp would be a unique point of difference in that mix, and probably more flexible in taking up a defensive post if required, but he's a midfielder first and foremost.

Any concerns over having all your 4 starting centre circle players as over 193cm? Big concern for me, without going over other teams lists, having 10 starting players 0ver 192cm or thereabouts is also a concern.

Robertson’s skills worry me. He isn’t the most natural looking player and I feel under the AFL system, he might be found out.

Someone posted some stats from the champs a few days ago in regards to this, Robertsons disposal efficiency numbers were better than several of his supposed better skilled competition.

Might have been Terry who posted it.
