I see Sydney as the club to trade with.
They are apparently into Serong and would love to bring him on board with pick 10 on the back of Flanders at pick 6.
This would really accelerate their rebuild.
They would be looking at bringing in Daniher for free next year and they have 2 academy boys they could pay for with later picks so wouldn’t mind turning their 1st next year into Serong this year.
The deal would also have to include an agreement that they trade Papley to us next year.

For Carlton :

This year we land one of Stephens/Taylor/Williams

Next year we land Papley with one of our 1sts as per the agreement with Sydney in the deal.
This still leaves us with 2 x 1sts to land another big fish, setting us up for a full scale assault on the top 4 in 2021 and beyond.
Conversely, Geelong could be good to trade with. They have two firsts next year (theirs and West Coast's) both likely late.
They may have an interest to trade up one of those.
Eg our future first for the wce future first should be worth about 600 plus, combined with p43 gives about 1000 and not far off p17 value.
We'd do this knowing who is at 17 - this year's Stocker deal.

"I have spoken."

We shouldn’t have tunnel vision with Papley. 12 months is a long time, and although we want to keep some draft picks for some potential future trades, a lot can happen in between. He might look to be traded to a different team or not want to be traded at all.

I’d sooner look to bring in another first round pick this year given the number of small forwards available than safeguard next year’s first with the expectation Papley will be wanting to come to us - although he more than likely will. There will be more than one way to bring him in than flicking next year’s first to Sydney.

Pick 10

Pick 25

Sydney future 1st (possible top 5 pick)

Guarantee on Papley trade next year allowing us to concentrate fully on a second big fish with the 2 1st rounders we would hold.

This deal would have Carlton ready to explode into the top four in 2021 and beyond.
Guarantee for what though? Neither of us know the assets we have at that point.

This seems fanciful to me.

You know how the answer to this goes. It depends who's there at 9 and who you project will get to 15 and 20.

But to answer your question...sorta...if it were me...if Robertson and Kemp were there i would like to use 9. If they weren't, i would trade down and be fairly confident of getting Pickett at 15 and very confident of getting Williams at 20. I'd love 2 shots at that medium/small forward we need and both could be stars.

There's a thousand answers to every query 5 days before a draft. It's great fun.

MMM stated on air this morning that Melbourne are taking Pickett at 10!!! and Jackson at 3. Still want to trade down?

It’s pretty simple.
If we make that deal this year, we will hold 3 x 1st rounders next year.
The deal would include a guarantee from Sydney to trade Papley next year for 1 of those 3 1st round picks.
The knowledge that we have a guarantee on Papley gives us the ability to concentrate fully on landing a second big fish next year with the remaining 2 x 1st rounders we would hold.
Nothing fanciful about it really.

The Swans have the potential to leap back up I to finals contention next year (provided Buddy stays healthy), I am very bullish on their list and kids..
Also I am still bitter over their refusal to trade Papley, so I don't want us to trade with them for now :)

How does the guarantee come about though?

We can shake hands with Beatson and he may be gone next year.
Papley may have an outrageously good year and the Sydney board block the deal, or demand more than what we shook hands on.

I think we're all well aware now that if a trade isn't done - It's just not done.
To set aside another year of not getting the types we need and for them not to come through could be disastrous for the club...and then we missed on Serong who we may have wanted and would have got a year into.

I know what you're saying RB, but that's all too risky a strategy, unless it doesn't really matter that we miss on Papley

Big fish are overrated.

Dougal Howard was one of St Kilda's big fish. Lapped in the 2km time trial :p

High profile players are hard to secure. In most cases, there's a reason why they're leaving, and it's generally because the club doesn't want them there anymore.

Would still rather draft our stars and trade for needs. Means that we're less likely to lose a young gun such as a Dow, Fisher or SPS due to a cap squeeze.

Papley is a very good player, but massively overrated on this board.

Using pick 9 in the draft is the best outcome for us :)

I assumed we were getting a later 1st round pick if we got Papley, which would have been an acceptable outcome (in my opinion)

I wouldn't mind doing a future pick swap with Hawthorn tbh, I can hone9stly see the Hawks sliding down to bottom 4 in 2020.

Even with Tom Mitchell to come back into their lineup?

Both clubs football departments will remain largely the same next year.
An agreement of this nature would also have the stamp of approval from both clubs head of football and both clubs CEO’s along with Papley’s management.
There is no way known Sydney would reneg on the deal, they just wouldn’t.
Sydney bring in Flanders and Serong this year to accelerate their rebuild.
Next year they bring in 2 academy kids paid for with later picks and Daniher for free to prepare for the departure of an ageing Franklin.
It’s a good deal for both clubs and Sydney are far too professional to be reneging on this kind of agreement.
That kind of cowboy behaviour is more the work of Cochrane at GC.

I like your thinking but I couldn't do that deal on a handshake and any signed (under-the-table) documents wouldn't stand up to the scrutiny of the AFL, who'd have every right to go real hard at any party wanting to make noise about it.

Here's another thing that's worthy of consideration in regards to your notion: What if Papley changes his mind? :)

I think if we are drafting Weightman, then it will be as a result of trading down the draft order. I can’t see us keeping 9 and using it on Weightman.

I thought Weightman has meant to be a big slider in this draft. I wouldn't be happy if we took him with our first pick tbh.
