We had Serong, Kemp, Rowell and Potter as part of this draft training at the club.

Bailey Smith and Jye Caldwell the year prior.

Can you give me % of players drafted to clubs they’ve trained at...? 😀

Edit: only 5 from last year, mostly F/S’s & NGA’s.

I love how heaps don’t want Serong yet he’s rated top 5 by a lot of ‘experts’.

There’s a reason. Exposed form over 2 years. Can’t see that stopping
Just watched the highlights package of him....looks pretty impressive, but honestly looks much like Stocker with his body composition and the way he plays....which isn't a bad thing, just not sure if we need another.

That's why I would prefer Kemp, who when he gets himself up and running, could be the bigger bodied mid with genuine speed. Has huge upside.

Having said that, I'm fairly confident we'll select Serong. Seems to be a lot of groundswell in the media around us picking him.

Serong is yet to have an AFL focused pre-season due to cricket commitments, which explains why he is heavier than expected for his height and may explain his lack of zip too.

I trust a pre-season or two with Andrew Russell will sort a lot of that out. If he slides to 9 I really hope we take him, as I think he is the perfect blend of best available and needs based drafting.

Can definitely see why people aren't initially keen on Serong from watching his highlights packages. He doesn't possess anything eye catching but watch him in full games and his class is evident.

His kicking is actually quite good. Far more reliable than Sam Flanders. To be honest, Flanders executes far more 'wtf was that' moments than Serong. Serong does actually remind me of Stocker to some extent. Classy, one-touch midfielder with grunt. A touch less explosive, skills not quite as good but he has Stocker covered in other areas. Russell will have him shed a few kilos and build some more zip.

Serong is what he is. What I actually like about him besides his demeanour is his actual output and his forward ability. If I see Dow, Cripps, Walsh and Setterfield as all becoming good enough to be full time mids then Serong is perfect in that role of playing 80% forward and 20% mid because let’s face it if those guys are full time mids there is very little time left for anyone else. He will likely be a better player for Carlton then most others in that range because he has a spot waiting for him and not be like Dow who doesn’t really have a second position.
This is of course assuming that our kids live up to their potential and I am more then happy for the recruiting team not to just back in all our youth and go for a Robertson knowing that he might keep another of our young kids out.

I'm warming to Serong. He may not be the most polished player but is probably the perfect type of player we need to draft and has an outstanding array of intangible assets - most importantly his ability and drive to compete and be the best he can be.

I'll back Russell and Teague to bring his best out and can see him playing early games if he comes to us. I'd love a Young type if he fell or Kemp for his potential and Stephens is still my #1 preference. But it'd be fitting to get a high-quality small mid/forward with 9 in light of missing on Papley.

Stephens is more capable of playing in the middle. If you can be bothered/ have time watch his game in then SANFL reserves GF.
I'll try to have a watch, not sure i'll have time though with baby #2 getting ready to join us shortly

Young is too much of a 'reach' to take at pick 9/10 imho.

We need someone who can have an impact straight away, Kemp or Flanders would be ideal, but they won't be there at our pick.

Would be pretty happy with Serong myself, love lads that are competitive beasts. He definitely would be a safe bet selection and am am comfortable with that:)

Hold on a second.

You're suggesting Young is too much of a reach because he may not impact straight away, yet all for Kemp who will miss a fair chunk of his debut season recovering from a torn ACL?

Wasn't aware of that fact about Kemp, so I take your point gracefully, although to be fair, the Saints did a similar punt on Max King (whom I think will be a decent player, although not as good as his twin

Haven't seen all that much of Young, do you think he would be worth taking the punt on J ? Feel like the club will take someone who can play straight away, not sure if that is the case with Young.

Young has been touted Top 3 for a while until Jackson moved in, Elmer_Judd - so 10 is a steal - not a reach.

As has been prophesied, it's very even from that 3 - 12 range. I'd say a reach would be Pickett at 10 by Melbourne. But then again, what do I know?!

Oh boy, do I look silly now 🤣🤣🤣

It does seem like we will be in a position to pick up a terrific kid at any rate, which is why I don't want us to downgrade that pick for an extra pick. Quality over Quantity.

I pointed out the ACL injury to counter the notion that we should select Kemp because he'd be able to have an immediate impact. Clearly that is not the case.

It had nothing to do with whether or not I think he'd be a worthwhile selection at that pick. FWIW I have him in my top 7 but am wary of him and not just because of the injury, though that does have to be factored in.

Young is definitely worth considering if he is available at our pick. Has been entrenched inside top 5 calculations all year and would be very hard to ignore.

Not sure immediate impact is or should be a prerequisite at our selection.

Young would instantly become one of the best kicks in the team playing across half back (common comparison is Nick Haynes from GWS) if we drafted him, and I think would be ready for round 1. Competition for places would be Newman, Simpson, Marchbank, Doc. However, I just don't see him getting to our pick at all.

If anyone would like to see some vision of Young in action:

The kick at 2:35 mark tells you everything you need to know.

Have seen that video a few times now, and every time I watch it I fall more in love with him.

How could anyone not want him wearing navy blue after watching that?

How could he possibly still be on the board when our pick comes around?

PICK 10: CARLTON – CALEB SERONG

Clubs:
Gippsland Power/Vic Country

Position: Inside Midfielder/Small Forward

Size: 178cm, 83kg

Bio: Serong’s ball-winning ability might’ve been his sole question mark coming into the year, but he’s a player who doesn’t need a big 25 disposal-plus game to hurt opposition teams. He’s one of the more damaging forward half players in this crop, plus his disposals and clearance work help his team get the ball forward and attack on goal. Serong has strength around the contest and is a smart player in traffic, able to clear the ball well quickly and effectively. During the Under 18 Championships, Serong averaged 23.5 disposals and 8.5 tackles. It’s his tenacious approach around the ball that makes him such an important player.

In the mix: Out of all the selections inside the top 10, Carlton’s appears the most likely to be in the conversation for a trade. Could the Suns come calling if Deven Robertson or Fischer McAsey make it all the way through? The Cats too could make an audacious jump up the draft order to secure the key defender. Serong is arguably one of the best midfielders in the draft pool so could be too hard to say no to, while Dylan Stephens will also be discussed if not taken by the Crows.
