His highlights are as much of him tackling as they are of him getting the ball.

He averaged 8.5 tackles a game at the champs!!! (IIRC)

He's an aggressive, competitive little bugger.

I'm sold, hands look nice and clean in tight reads the play well and his pressure on the ball and player is awesome, would slot straight into current AFL game style.
There's been lot of concern raised over his kicking, it appears to me it is mainly when he tries to kick the footy too far, but his set shot and action looks fine.

Am I the only one who's not completely sold on Stephens? Looks very similar to O'Brien a couple of years ago who I reckon probably hasn't worked out as well as we'd hoped at this stage. Not to say both won't be great players, but with others such as Fisher, Newnes and Martin (who's likely coming) showing improvement, we seem to have enough outside runners and Stephen's type players.
Yes you are...

Daniel Cherny in The Age has Freo taking Serong, so we get Stephens.

Kicking would have to be the most over-scrutinised aspect in football, especially for mids.

Dangerfield and Fyfe are not good kicks, not even close. Dangerfield in particular is a pretty terrible kick. But they make up for it with a host of other assets that contribute to dominating/winning football games.

Paddy Dow's kicking is an issue at the moment, but wouldn't be so much if he cleaned up his defensive running, built his tank and chased properly. It wouldn't be a factor attached to a more rounded game.

Serong has a VERY well-rounded game (tackling, finding the ball, aerial ability).
That's because, contrary to how the game is played today, IMHO footskills are still the most important skill. Just because the game has adapted, doesn't mean they are less relevant, just means players have honed other skills more. Scott Pendlebury, Gary Ablett (until recently) still cut opposition teams apart with precision and well weighted kicking.

Like Dow? I hate when the attribute to fix is kicking, especially on a top 10 pick.
Here Here. Shouldn't be Top ten if footskills are below par.

Am I right in assuming there will be meltdowns on this board tomorrow night, no matter whom we take at pick 9 ?

I am Caleb Serong fan, but for some reason,i feel like there will be a few unhappy campers if we pick him up. Thing is, I don't think we can go wrong with a player of his characteristics and competitiveness, and he just seems like the best fit for us and our current list demographic. But I am not a massive or avid draft class watcher like many of the other learned contributers on this forum.
EJ, there are bound to be melts. Our history is strong 8n this regard. I’d be stoked with any of Stephens, Serong, Young, Kemp or Robertson. At least one will be there.

I would prefer we use pick 9 on a bull-like midfielder or a small forward. Other than that pick best available.
I don't see the point in getting a Bull-Mid from the draft this late into the rebuild. We need someone who can help Crippa out (Cogs-like) and a you draftee would be too slow to come on, or they would get smashed now. I'd rather start covering future retirements/losses positions like Murph, Simmo, & Jones with Draft picks. Hopefully we can poach or pickup a mature age Mid-bull to help Crippa.

Add mongrel to the list. Exactly what we need.

I am quite keen to trade up with the Swans.

- they rate four players similar, one of whom is Kemp (according to their own recruiter)
- I think Kemp is there at our pick for aure
- Stephens is not one of their 4
- I think a fair deal is 9 and next years second for 5.

Whether we want Young or Stephens more I don’t mind. Next years second is more useful to them (Academy points) than us.

Who’s in?
