McGrath had proven his midfield credentials and had dominated in the position in his draft year.

Ash and Young have yet to do so in a meaningful way.

McGrath dominated at half back in the u18 champs from memory.

He ended the year proving himself as a midfielder where he gathered obscene numbers. He ended up averaging 7 clearances a game.

Would love us to get Trent Bianco. I know it’s a bit early for him. But really rate him. He’s gone down the pecking order because he opted to play mainly school footy this year.
But his national carnival last year was awesome.

He didn't play school footy this year

Has been chatter of Kemp for our pick, but may just be his range. If we're keen to take the risk on his ACL, he may slide to that late-first given guys with big injury concerns do? Seems a likely type, big-bodied and versatile. Who better to mentor him through that rehab than Doc?

Chatter or just a general wish list of posters on this board?

Im starting to have flashbacks of Geelong taking Joel Selwood at #7 back in 2006 and the huge win that was for them.

He was considered a slider due to his knee injuries. I'm hoping we can finaly be a in a position to do something similar and take a risk on an elite talent that slides, knowing full well that we have the facilities off-field with Russell & Co to be able to back ourselves in.

I'd use the same logic on perhaps exploring Bennell/Murray as a DFA.

Pick 9 on Rivers if he is still there, which I doubt if recruiters are worth their salt

Would take a slider, Flanders or Young, doubt they will be available either

Interesting you say that about Rivers, since most form guides I've seen have him outside the top 10, even sometimes outside the top 20. What makes him so appealing to you?

His reading of the play/fall of the ball is beyond his years. Vision, usage is elite. After the carnival he was released as a midfielder, goal kicking midfielder

Has Fyfe traits with better disposal

Obviously you're not implying that he'll be as good as Fyfe, but wowee that sounds great, sign me up!

Where do you think he'll go if you don't think he'll make it to 9?

Depends how recruiters rate him, I have at 4 at the moment, but doubt anyone has him rated that high

Most would see him in the 8 - 16 range

If we somehow pull some shenanigans and end up with 14 from Geelong, realistically can you see him sliding to there? If so I'd love to trade down to get 14 and a second rounder to pick up a small forward as well, if that's possible of course.

This is a really good summary of the kid

East Fremantle/Western Australia | Balanced Midfielder
30/07/2001 | 189cm | 84kg

It is a good year for East Fremantle, with prospects basically growing on trees, and Rivers is another touted top 30 prospect along with Jeremy Sharp and Luke Jackson. Rivers is a natural-born leader who thrives on the contest and is as consistent as they come, racking up more than 20 disposals in most outings. He loves to tackle and put his body on the line, and is a crucial key to the midfield of Western Australia at the national championships. Unlike a lot of other top-end midfielders this year, Rivers has the size on him, standing at 189cm and 84kg, and readymade for senior football.

I don't rate any of the small forwards that highly this year.

It will be very interesting to see what we do with this pick:

- Keep it;
- Split it; or
- Engineer a trade, effectively doing a reverse-Adelaide

If we do keep it, we must go with best available talent, as long as that talent is under 190cm.

TCP said there's a good chance we downgrade it. There are around 5 players that we would automatically take if there but will probably be gone.

Posted yesterday in the blumour discussion thread.

Sokol is a poor mans Gibbons, better forward but couldn't play midfield.

Huh?

I guess Weitering is a poor man's Walsh? Better defender, but couldn't play midfield...
