You know how the answer to this goes. It depends who's there at 9 and who you project will get to 15 and 20.

But to answer your question...sorta...if it were me...if Robertson and Kemp were there i would like to use 9. If they weren't, i would trade down and be fairly confident of getting Pickett at 15 and very confident of getting Williams at 20. I'd love 2 shots at that medium/small forward we need and both could be stars.

There's a thousand answers to every query 5 days before a draft. It's great fun.
I think I’m taking it if Stephens is gone. I think the number of question marks on players jumps a notch after he goes. The Serong, Kemp, Robertson and beyond group. May make it. But more question marks for mine. Or specially BIGGER question MARK.

It's gonna be a hoot on draft night. Because of SOS last year, every viewer will be anticipating trades at every pick lol. Will be interesting night(s) for sure. No-one really knows when their club will pounce, and who on.

Except the Saints who have sold the farm to ensure the sellers(Lethlean,Gallagher,Ratten) get at least a few years with snout in trough.

I'm not convinced they have the capacity to meet the terms of Martin's contract.

I also have a feeling Port will provide the most favourable trade should Stephens be available at our selection.

Agreed re the Martin business, he’s ours.

Port is the club I’m hoping come a knocking if Robertson is gone at our pick.

I want Young, Robertson, Stephens, Kemp.

Not in that order...I want ALL of them!

Ok, so we have this year's first, next year's first, a red paperclip and I just found $1.50 in between the couch cushions.

Let's make it happen!

:p

That offer is laughable in its patheticness....however, if you throw in FINBAR, then it might just get past Ken Wood's scrutiny.

As if we'd trade Finbar for that motley crew though.

15 and 20 could drop as low as 18 and 23 depending on when the Finn Maginness bid comes in. I think there is a high chance that the tier 3 players in the draft we might want (Bergman, Weightman, Sharp, maybe C Stephens) are gone by then and as such poses too much of a risk.

If for arguments sake those picks became 17 (pushed by Green & Henry) & 23 (pushed again by Maginness), who are you picking with them?
The same players would still be there to choose from, because the father-sons & academy picks do not remove anyone you might consider drafting because they are not in the "normal" pool unless you place a bid on them and land them somehow. Your pick number goes further back due to the bids, but the same players are still there because they were not "tied" to anyone in the first place.........it seems like you are losing ground, but it`s just a later number, not a later player.

That's completely fair and I probably incorrectly conflated the two a bit in how I worded my statement. I guess my point would be that you aren't getting the (arguably) 15th most talented kid in the draft. You are getting the 17th or 18th most talented.

We may feel more comfortable drafting for needs rather than best available with picks later in the first round, but Henry is off to Freo & Weightman won't last past the Bulldogs pick at 13. Is Pickett too much of a reach for our first of the two picks? It feels like 15 is one or two picks too late.

Hey bluebaggers, Freo fan here. Since we've traded up ahead of you guys, life has gotten easier for us purple eyed supporters. The only questions I have are regarding Liam Henry. Will Carlton still bid on him? I'd imagine Freo are committed to Henry but that doesn't mean you can't bid on him to keep us honest.

I think we're taking Deven Robertson at 8 if he gets past Sydney at 5. What's this mumbo jumbo about Stewy Dew liking Deven? They would be reaching for him unless they traded with Swans/Adelade. (15&20 for 5 or 6?)

Good win at Subi Optus this season.

I think after Freos move I see us with little chance of going to pick 9 in this draft. We have essentially slidden from pick 8 to pick 11 after Gold Coasts PP plus GWS and Freo leaping bid positions for respective academy players. I feel these points are best rolled over to next draft now where there will be plenty of clubs looking for points to fill academy picks and/or jump up the draft order to get ahead of bids. Played correctly this pick can increase considerably in value over the next 2 years. Unless there is a player we are SERIOUSLY into at our pick I can't see us using it.

Current thoughts:

McAsey, Stephens,Robertson and (for shits and giggles, not because I think it) Young. One of them has to be there at 10.

SO

- if it’s Stephens I think we take him
- if it’s McAsey I see multiple clubs coming for 10. Worst case we get offered 14 and 24 from Cats. I think we take it.
- if it’s Robertson I think we are offered 15 and 20 from GC and I think we will take it
- and for the fun of it: if it’s Young I could see a ridiculous bid by Port and we’d take it

In any even the only way I see us keeping 10 now is if Stephens falls. Doesn’t mean I want that. Just what I think.

Let’s see if I’m right hey kids!

Has anyone else noticed the inordinate number of small mid/forwards in this draft between 175-179cm have never seen so many and think there are going to be a lot of disappointed boys after the draft as I can’t see them all getting drafted even though a large number of them have the talent, as we’ve seen with our club teams are loath to play sub 180 players in the guts where a lot of them play the majority of there footy, a complete contrast to other years where there are usually an abundance of mids between 183-192, strange.
if we had Dayne Zorko that would change... Likewise with Louche Neil... Just needs to be A-A-grade Talent

For us nothing really changes. If we bid on Henry you likely take him either way, just depends on what picks you had to use to match. Making sure you found a pick before hand just means you pick another kid too, before you need to match.

This looks a standard move across the league now. As you get closer to draft and have a feel for developing draft order of most clubs, you can have a reasonable guess where certain players likely being taken so if you have a father/son or academy player nominated, you ideally find another pick before they likely get bid on so you ensure you get another player before you need to match bids.
If he is not bid on before our pick and, if we believe he is best player left in pool at that pick we will bid on him.

Interesting they reckon Serong is someone SOS has eye on.
No doubt about that but I think he will go in top 5 or 6 picks.
Kemp is way more likely to slip to us than Serong.
But if neither is still there at 9, I'll probably be all for live trading pick 9 to a pick in late teens and a pick in second round.
Getting Cody Weightman in the late teen picks and someone else in the 20's would be good result if there is no clear elite talent slider at 9.

1.GC ... Rowell
2.GC ... Anderson
3.Mel ... Jackson
4.GWS ... Ash
5.GWS ... Green
6.Syd ... Flanders
7.Ade ... McAsey
8.Fre ... Robertson
9.Fre ... Stephens
10.Fre ... Henry
11.Car ... Serong/Kemp/Young/Pickett

If we use the pick, I’m taking Serong or Pickett.

Would consider trading down for a future 1st and a current 2nd with either Sydney or Adelaide.
The future 1st would give us 3 1st rounders next year to really attack the trade period and bring in the big fish.
Sydney & Adelaide are every chance to finish bottom 8 next year so the pick would at least be equivalent to our pick this year and could very easily be a top 5 selection.
The 2nd rounder for this year, Adelaide 22&23 or Sydney 25, could see us land C.Stephens if he is on our radar or E.Taylor/D.Williams if we are looking for a classy forward.

I see Sydney as the club to trade with.
They are apparently into Serong and would love to bring him on board with pick 10 on the back of Flanders at pick 6.
This would really accelerate their rebuild.
They would be looking at bringing in Daniher for free next year and they have 2 academy boys they could pay for with later picks so wouldn’t mind turning their 1st next year into Serong this year.
The deal would also have to include an agreement that they trade Papley to us next year.

For Carlton :

This year we land one of Stephens/Taylor/Williams

Next year we land Papley with one of our 1sts as per the agreement with Sydney in the deal.
This still leaves us with 2 x 1sts to land another big fish, setting us up for a full scale assault on the top 4 in 2021 and beyond.

and you just lose 12 months development on a top 10 i s h young Recruit when getting Stocker early shows the value of early development in this Carlton rebuild for the now

The Papley deal would be too hard to orchestrate that far out from trade period, but I really like the concept considering we know he wants out.

I agree. If we were to trade into the 2020 draft, Sydney would be one of the clubs to target. They're a good chance to finish bottom 6.

The Papley part of the deal would be pretty straight forward.
The 2 clubs shake hands this year on an agreement that Papley gets to Carlton next year for 1 of the 3 1st rounders we will hold.

Wouldn’t mind some variation of this, would have to be HEAVILY stacked in our favour though because we would be running with no Papley next year and no first year gun rookie (unless we pick a gem late).

Something like this should be enabled on draft night so both clubs don’t have to wait a year for no reason. Draft day trading should be extended to include established players. Makes logical sense though so no way the AFL would consider it.

Stephens/Taylor/Williams are all really rated and we could be confident of landing one of them with pick 25 from Sydney.
The knowledge of having Papley tied up for next season would allow us to really zone in on another big fish with the 2 remaining 1st rounders we would hold.
This would make 2021 and beyond, really serious business for Carlton ...
