1. Longmuir has told his recruiters to prioritise outside run and they are expected to draft halfback Hayden Young with their first selection and then pair him with either Stephens or Caleb Serong.
The Dockers took an inside midfielder in Luke Valente at No. 32 last year, which could count against them also selecting Robertson.

2. Clubs believe GWS is likely to select speed machine Lachie Ash at No. 4, hoping he can help replace Heath Shaw, who turns 34 this week.

3. The Swans are desperate for an inside midfielder to replace Josh Kennedy - (looking at Flanders)

4. The Crows are considering Fischer McAsey as they plan for life after Daniel Talia, 28.

One article and if it pans out this way, along with Melbourne taking Pickett, can one honestly say that best available was adhered to at every call?
It just doesn't work out that way on every occasion, regardless of recruiters still running off cliches. They're not going to say, "Player X was the better player but we needed player Y more" are they? This isn't hard to understand.

It's interesting to hear about the review of the points discount being given to clubs for academy tied players, with the possibility being that the discount is reduced or removed entirely for the top 30.

One of the possible #1 picks is tied to the Bulldogs academy, could this open the door to trading with them to give them more currency next year in return for something back this year?

Pretty confident that if the AFL are going to change it, they'll need to give clubs two years' notice. With future pick trading now happening, there would be outrage from the clubs if the whole points/bidding system changed after they'd made trades with the original system in mind.

Stephens - A goal-kicking run and carry mid. We need it.
Serong - A tough, dangerous, strong marking and goal-kicking small forward - We need it.
Young - A HBF'er that we may not need as much as the others but one whose quality is simply too good to ignore.

Should any of those three be taken tomorrow night, I'll be very...very...happy.
Not so much should it be Kemp, Robertson, Flanders, McAsey or Pickett.

Now seems like either Stephens or Serong.

Will be content with either.

I'm off to watch the SANFL grand final now Windows. Will report back for duty.

Assuming Green and Henry are bid on, this will be pick 11 on the night.

Jungle drums beating loudly for Serong. Is Serong too small/messy for midfield duties at AFL level? Or is he the next Dion Prestia / Dayne Zorko?

Toby Greene went pick 11.....just saying....

Am I the only one who's not completely sold on Stephens? Looks very similar to O'Brien a couple of years ago who I reckon probably hasn't worked out as well as we'd hoped at this stage. Not to say both won't be great players, but with others such as Fisher, Newnes and Martin (who's likely coming) showing improvement, we seem to have enough outside runners and Stephen's type players.

I'm thinking we will have a load of options by the time pick 9 is called out. If there is no stand-out selection that meets our needs I am hoping beyond hope that Port have been in to our ear and offered up a deal.

Carlton give up Pick 9 & 43 for Port's Picks 12, 18 & 52.

Port then have selections 9, 16 & 43 and get the player they desperately want at pick 9.
Carlton gets picks 12, 18 & 52.

We select Kemp, S. De Koning (yes I love the thought of him being at the club with his brother - and is a lifelong carlton fan), and a project small forward.

Kemp spends a year with A.R getting ready for the 2021 season.

You can tell Stephens has a greater inside game than LOB. Runs more attacking lines, too. I think the similarities end at great runner and left footer imo. I’m sold on Stephens at #9. Although, I wouldn’t expect him to see much senior football next year unless he blows us all away. His body is not AFL-ready, yet. But that combo of speed and endurance excites me.

I reckon there will be plenty of interest in Taheny, and we may have to trade down, but it’d be worth it.
Yeah not sure on Taheny I think Taylor has more talent but then again Taheny is probably the safer bet in terms of being ready for AFL as Taylor has question marks on his commitment.

Harker I agree any of these three youngsters would be a very good outcome. Young, is not crucial however would give us great flexibility, Serong & Stephens are both highly rated ball winners and both impact the scoreboard.

Have you watched Stephens at all? Definitely not a limited outside player.

I think Young would be an outstanding get, and would be expected to slot seamlessly into the half back line in two years when SPS transitions into a full time mid role.

NOW:
HB: SPS, Marchbank, Docherty
C: Walsh, Curnow, Setterfield
R: Kreuzer, Cripps, Murphy

SOON:
HB: Young, Marchbank, Docherty
C: Walsh, Stocker, Setterfield
R: TDK, Cripps, SPS

Young is my hope for a slide to pick 9.

That kicking is game-breaking. And he's not just a flaky rebounding HBFer. He is a good size, can mark, intercept and actually....you know, defend...
I think it was Knightmare who stated Young's weakness is being too accountable? He's a guy who should be taken regardless of need. Throw the magnets around or develop his midfield craft. That kicking is absolutely game changing.

The thing that worries me with taking Stephens is our already heavy reliance on attacking down the left side where we already have Simmo, OB4Kinobi and Fish, I mentioned in another thread how heavily we are biased to that left wing when attacking where as on the right side it is more kick mark than run carry, just think that Stephens would add to that and we need to develop our right side attack so as not to be as predictable, at the moment the only one that really attacks the right and delivers well inside 50 is Murph who as we know hasn’t got long left, Setters isn’t that great delivering inside 50 and I would like to see us look for a classy right footed wing rather than another lefty. And yes Windows I know Stephens can play in the middle but he is still another left side dominant player which with Fish and LOB we already have 2 good deliverers inside 50. I don’t know maybe I’m over thinking it. Then again we just got Newnes and Martin so hopefully one of them will fix the issue.

Interesting point actually. We do have a lot of line breaking left footers. Tis quite the predicament. I guess we’re hoping cottrell comes on?

Yeah Cottrell is coming along nicely and has a beautiful kick on him, I’m hoping we play Martin on that right wing to try and develop our attack down that side, from early training reports it sounds like Setters might be set for more inside work next year so that frees up his wing for Martin or Newnes.

Yeah, Martin and Newnes do plenty to help balance it out. There's also Setterfield, Stocker, Walsh, SPS, Cunners, Gibbons, Cottrell etc. Plenty of players with outside capability who can use the ball effectively.

As nice as it would be to have 3-4 players of both left- and right-foot dominant varieties with elite endurance and speed, we can make do with less. Hell, not even "make do", we can excel. With quality disposal and hard running, it's only two kicks from the backline to the forward line.
