Sounds like Serong thinks he's going to Fremantle.

Looks like it's either Stephens or a trade down for us.

Confident it will be Young and Serong now, as close to the horse's mouth as you can hope for. Caleb himself believes he's heading to Fremantle (though he understands how things change).

I remember a few years back talking to Cedric Cox in his hometown of Camperdown a couple of days before the draft. He told me the Bulldogs and Essendon had both said they were going to pick him, but the Bulldogs opted out, and Ridley slid so the Bombers picked him up.

I'd asked about him moving interstate and he was that confident he was staying in Vic he said "Not an issue, but it won't happen." So when a player believes they are going somewhere it can't even be gospel.

But Young and Serong are good mates so Fremantle are keen to bundle them up.

Wild speculation only but whoever drafts Thomson might have one eye on a long-range acquisition of Paddy.

P Dow could be gettable for another club in a couple of years, methinks.

I don't see the point in getting a Bull-Mid from the draft this late into the rebuild. We need someone who can help Crippa out (Cogs-like) and a you draftee would be too slow to come on, or they would get smashed now. I'd rather start covering future retirements/losses positions like Murph, Simmo, & Jones with Draft picks. Hopefully we can poach or pickup a mature age Mid-bull to help Crippa.

Taking overall list demographics into account is fine.

Trying to draft around one guy is not the right approach.

It was misguided to so with Judd and it will be misguided to do so with Cripps. IMO.

If 80% of our top end kids really come on, someone will shake loose, so you could be right.

Fast forward 5 years: Cripps, Walsh, Setterfield, SPS, Dow, Stocker, Fisher, Stephens (?)

That's a lot of quality, and it would be naive to think that a) clubs won't come for them, and b) a couple of them might see more opportunity elsewhere.

Well that's dumb. That sounds great now but when you're watching a Patrick Cripps clone ripping it up for years while you have average Sam Flanders being a tough guy foot soldier I'm sure that northern academy club respect will be meaningless. If these northern clubs get freebies make them pay properly for it.

Was going to suggest a bit of tit for tat - GWS are always looking to position themselves near the top of the draft, and so will also be in positions where they could bid on Sydney academy players, so maybe Sydney want to establish a quiet agreement not to bid on eachothers players...


...but last year GWS bid on Blakey. So I dunno.

I guess Green just isn't rated as highly by clubs as he is by the media who have decided to liken him to Crippa. That's the power of the "plays like" profile.

Rumours on the D & T board is that Freo will likely take Young and Serong. Might leave us with Stephens if he has not already been drafted by Adelaide. Very interesting draft coming up.

If Freo do that, it's a win-win for us.

If Adelaide take McAsey, we get Stephens.

If Adelaide take Stephens, McAsey is available and it becomes a bidding war between 3 or 4 clubs trying to trade up to get him.

True true. I really like him as a footballer. I'd nearly take him at pick 1 as I know that you can build a midfield around him so when I see other clubs not bidding at 5 my mind is blown.

It could be as simple as a gentleman’s agreement between clubs in the same market, makes sense to me...well never bid on yours if you don’t bid on ours.

Having said that, GWS traded to get ahead of the swans so I’m probably talking shit!!
