Backs - Hawthorn ( May not be the best defensively but their ability to kill teams on the rebound is insane!)
Mids - Port ( Run hard both ways, tackle well, hard at it, kick goals, young with plenty of upside)
Forwards - Sydney ( great defensive pressure and two blue chip key forwards)
Rucks - WC ( Two mobile ruck men who can break a game open)

Gotta say I'm quite content...

But Geelongs defence was the best, I think it's dropped off a bit. Sandi is great, but injury prone, NicNat is up and down, Cox is getting on... So would take Lobbe, esp if it came with Wines...

I guess Sydney's fwd line is pretty epic, but unproven yet.

So yeah I'd be content... though I'd like to find a place to bring Pendles and Swan in... not the rest :p

Beams is playing much better than Swan. Beams has kicked more goals and found much more of the ball than Swan.

It's the off field things I'd worry about.

Port clearly has an incredible bond, so I'd want people who wouldn't ruin that. Having said that, Swan probably isn't that guy, but **** he's good.

People who play well on big games >>>> anyone else, hence my love for him and Wingard atm.

That's a hard one to choose really. I'll happily admit some bias in the following list :p

BACKLINE -
Eagles - very good backline, from memory one of the lowest scores against in the AFL this season, considering our midfield dramas this is a great achievement, especially against geelong when they were under constant pressure

HM: Geelong - Extremely talented and tested over many years, Taylor alone makes this backline stand out as one to think about let alone the rest of them

MIDFIELD -
Gold Coast - Mixture of youth and pure class, they all seem to be goal kickers which gives them a good starting point and have many years left, Swallow, O'meara, Prestia, Ablett etc are all very dangerous and Ablett may even have 4 years or so left

HM's
Pies - Beams, Pendles, Swan, Ball ... class all round, mixture of skill and toughness
Hawks - Mitchell and Hodge alone are hard to go past but I did angle towards youth

FORWARD LINE -
Swans - I just don't think they've clicked yet but the names speak for themselves, they're getting better and with a good midfield they will no doubt be some of the best performed.

HM's:
Eagles - Happy with players like Darling, Lecras and Kennedy, resting ruckmen, not sure whether to include them but if not then even players like Cripps helps structurally, probably the best defensive big forwards out of anyone, not that that makes them the best defensive forwardline overall. Good mixture of class and courage
Hawks - Gunston, Bruest, sharp shooters if you will ever see them and clever footballers.

RUCKS -
Eagles - Forget the garbage you read and hear from "experts" like Gary Lyon, the eagles rucks are still the best and they will prove so when they are fully fit, they have some very good back ups as well, coached by Cox (who lets not forget how good he has been) they will develop nicely.

HM
Freo - Sandi is a beast, not as good as he could be and will never reach that legendary point due to some trouble marking but around a contest he is impossible to move and his height gives him first pick of who to tap to on most occasions. Clarke is inconsistent but has shown some good signs, even kicking 3 goals against the eagles.
This is embarrassing to read.

Excluding my own team

Back - Geelong
Mid - Sydney/Port - Against strong contested teams I'd want Sydney. Against running teams, Port.
Fwd - Hawthorn
Ruck - Fremantle

I was just saying Beams over Swan because he is having a much better year

Which bit in particular?

More than just myself has had Eagles backs and Rucks, just because I threw some honourable mentions in there with the forward line which boasts one of the leading goal kickers last year, a top 3 young chf and mark lecras? It's not outrageous to give an honourable mention. Which bit exactly is that far off the mark?

I did admit bias before I even started seeing as how I know a lot more about our list than others

Umm the bit where you had 3 areas of the ground rated as the best or 2nd best in the competition for a team that finished 13th last year and is 9th this year having beaten up on literally the bottom 5 teams in the comp.

West Coast has nowhere near the best line across any area of the field and it's silly to think so.

Based on this year's form we don't even have the rucks.

Our forwards can't take contested marks, has very little structure and gets by on some hard work, we don't have a suitable mix and players like Cripps are far too inconsistent to hold the small fwd role. Kennedy is a downhill skier and lacks marking power when on the lead or in a contested situation.

Our defenders are solid, but also lack decent structure and cannot quell the smalls from opposition teams.

Our mids are obviously 17th or 18th in the comp and this does make the other lines look worse, but still - West Coast could be lucky to have top 5 in any position outside rucks.

B: Geelong (Taylor, Lonergan, Enright, Bartel, Kelly, Rivers)
M: Collingwood (Swan, Pendlebury, Beams, Lumumba)
F: Sydney (Tippett, Franklin, Goodes, Parker, McGlynn, Reid)
R: West Coast (NN & Cox)

IC: Ablett, O'Meara, Bennell, Prestia

The team currently on top of the ladder is interesting in all this. Arguably have the best midfield/forward line but not either on its own. Take Wingard, Gray and even Monfries out of the midfield/forward rotation and it's much weaker. Too balanced and versatile for their own good.
