The final installment after the defence & midfield threads... Pick 7 forwards, including the interchange rotation. Also, you can't pick a player you have already picked as a defender or forward.

In 2017, we had the most dangerous forward line, but this year we lose Cameron... including his cameos in the midfield & charging off the back of the square.

Who will be his replacement? Gallucci, Hampton, Knights or even Fogerty to surprise in his first season?

My forward line:
HF: Lynch, Walker, Hampton
F: Betts, McGovern, Jenkins
I: Gallucci

HF: McGovern - Walker - Lynch
FF: Betts - Jenkins - Gullicci

Interchange: Greenwood

HF Rory Sloane, Taylor Walker, Tom Lynch
F Jordan Gallucci, Mitch McGovern, Eddie Betts
IC: Greenwood

I'd love Gov at full forward, Modra style.

Sloane is a better at half-forward than half-back. Good mark, great kick for goal, devilish tackler.

Gallucci will be a better forward than Cameron. Better kick, better footballer... not the same lightening pace or tackling aggression, but he is no slouch in those two categories either. Looks like the move of Milera to the 7th defender is a real possibility, so he's out of the mix for a forward position ... which doesn't seem like an awful move if Wayne can improve his defending and harden up at the contest. (I still see Milera on the wing, but that seems to be a different view than the coaches) Does Fogarty have a chance at this role in the forward line? Dunno, seems early to me - but would be something to see :)

No Jenkins in my forward six, he doesn't fit into my best 22, but then neither do Douglas or Hartigan.

Of course, in reality, Jenkins is locked into the full forward / second ruck role, so it will probably be something like:

HF Mitch McGovern, Taylor Walker, Tom Lynch
F Jordan Gallucci, Josh Jenkins , Eddie Betts

With Sloane back to the midfield / wing role.

It's funny how one change can completely change the feel of a line. Swap Sloane for Jenkins and the front half looks so much faster / more capable of defending the forward 50 / able to take contested marks ... than the second option. Should be a fun pre-season, see if Pyke and Co. thinks they were on the money last year and the GF was an aberration ... or if we learned something about our list on that day-that-shall-not-be-named.

HF: Lynch, Walker, Gallucci
FF: Betts, McGovern, Jenkins
I: Douglas

Note. Milera and knight are in my midfield and defensive make up.

Whether Jenkins fires is biggest question IMO.

If he doesn’t, do we replace him with another agile tall in Keath, or do we get another runner in, say a Poholke/Hampton/Fogarty?

Is Fogarty a runner yet? Pre-draft 2km time wasnt great (7.30 iirc). Presumably it's building his tank which will be his biggest challenge.

Again the starting 6 look settled, including the Gooch replacing CC:
HF: Lynch (100), Walker (100), Gallucci (77.8)
F: Betts (100), McGovern (100) , Jenkins (96.3)

Battle for the bench rotation spot, still early in the polling:
Knight (40.7 + 21.8 fwd)
Milera (14.8 + 28.2 def + 7.3 mid)
Fogarty (18.5 + 5.4 mid)

McGovern , Jenkins, Betts
Lynch , Walker , Douglas

Knight

I could add Gallucci but I want him more to work through the midfield while Douglas is forward. I can also see Knight and Greenwood interchange through there as well.

Unless I am getting a 50 goal forward or better somewhere else to replace him, JJ makes my starting 18
Was this sarcasm? Sorry if I missed it.

It was 45 not 50, and Jenkins was the important ingredient in how many of them?

In my 22, I have Sloane at half-forward with Gov moving to FF. They both kicked 20 goals last year. Do you think between them that Sloane and Gov could increase their output by 45 goals overall in 2018 to cover JJ? I do. We also have Bryce Gibbs in 2018, he kicked 17 last year for Carlton ... I think he'll kick more for us.

I don't want to keep hating on Jenkins, but he doesn't elevate himself in any football characteristic that I value. Keeping him in the team for his goal tally makes no sense to me.

It might just be me but the bloke that kicks the goal is an important ingredient in the goal kicked EVERY TIME. I don't think he would have had more than 4 or 5 JTG goals after the Geelong game when we changed the way we played so I'd say he earnt most of them.

Sloane is a mid - should play there 90% of the game. Gibbs too.

Ok, it was 45, but he has averaged 50 over the last 3 years (45, 62, 46).

Yep, poor finals series. Totally agree there. Tex wasn't outstanding either but I'm not going to drop him either.

Most important football characteristic I want of a forward - kick goals. Tick

Tex, Lynch and Jenkins makes 3 players who apply minimal defensive pressure. Losing Charles, Eddie is another year older. I think we have to drop one of the three big guys and Jenkins is the one.

Therefore I’m going with
- Tex, Lynch, McGovern as marking targets
- Betts, Gallucci, Knight, Poholke as ground ball contest winners

Positions of Gallucci, Knight and Poholke are all open pending pre season and JLT. Any of Jarman, Davis, Keath, Hampton also have a crack. Douglas if he falls out of the midfield rotations. I’d like to see multiple players get a chance during the year.

A few thoughts.

Id really like to see what fogarty has at afl level as a forward. As walker ages i can see this kid turning into an absolute beast and becoming our number 1 key forward. His willingness to tackle will be invaluable.
Hampton is in the box seat for line breaking midfielder imo. He has all the tools to give us what we need. Hopefully he has an injury free season and fulfills his promise. Once again his tackling pressure is an assett we cannot waste. Come finals soft campaigners get shown up on the big stage.
Ellis yolmen is an absolute monster. Bumped into him the other day and he is huge. As a midfield we lack a big bodied mid that is a tackling machine. Greenwood gave it to us in spurts but is still raw. I prefer greenwood as a forward/mid. Cey is the real deal. His knee looks good and he is healthy. Get him in the midfield and let him hurt the opposition.

Its time we started playing some mongrels in this team. It will go a long way in giving us a chance to push for a premiership again

CEY may be a 'beast', but he's just not good enough. You can't argue with 10 games in 6 years.
If you can give me a mid who was on a senior list for 6 years and hardly played a game then turned it all around I'll reconsider
Brodie Martin?

Someone didn’t pick Walker?

Every player in the forward line have shown poor form throughout the year including Betts but they all have shown a considerable amount of good form including JJ

You could make a case for All to be replaced for various reasons but Lynch Walker Betts JJ are clearly our best 4 Gov shows a lot of potential and should develop so those 5 are absolute locks

Would like to see Atkins up forward a bit more .. like having a nimble lefty up there and he knows where the goals are .
Also i think this may also force him to chase and tackle . If a chance for a sausage roll is on the end of it he will .
His field kicking can also be patchy in depth and penetration , sometimes loopy but in front of the sticks it is more instinctual.

Disagree with ya on almost all counts here.
  • I want to see Atkins inside more - his best skills are evasion, vision and distribution.
  • His field kicking is his core strength - not sure where you have seen a lack in depth and penetration? (there is a bad joke in there for someone)
  • I don't want his primary role to be chasing and tackling - he applies pressure but just needs to be more constant in his overall defensive efforts. I think a step up in fitness this year will help.
