Take a punt, and pick the firts player you think the hawks will draft with pick 3!

I say Josh Kennedy,

We will look back sat arvo, and see who got it right, like most years, I think there will be a few suprise picks along the way and this could be one of them! ;)

(Mate, You have spelled Hawthorn wrong in your name!)

Um.. Josh Kennedy for me though. Though I wouldn't mind anyone up that end, except I've cooled considerably on Ryder. I think Franklin is enough.
Dowler with pick 6 aswell. (Covers FF and CHF for 10 years)

So Kennedy for mine.

If the Pies take Josh Kennedy at Pick 2, I think the Hawks will take Shannon Hurn from Central Districts. Already playing senior football in a SANFL premiership side with no footy pre-season to speak of.

The Hawks should then take the next best KPP at Pick 6 (ie. Dowler, Ryder, Clark, Dunstall, Brereton, Hudson,...you get the picture ;) ).

If the Pies take Xavier Ellis, the Hawks will take Josh Kennedy, shoulder re-co or not I would think.

What happened to xavier ellis? If collingwood take kennedy, this will leave the outside midfielder we need and its the same kid clarkson said they will pick him if his there (even though we tend to do some suprise picks). I dont think we will take ryder his not tall enough to ruck and shannon hurn is going to play the role our sammy mitchel and jordan lewis play, so there is no room for him in our team IMO.

I think if collingwood pick Ellis we will take Kennedy
If collingwood take kennedy we will pick ellis

Who said he has to be a ruckman though? Tested at 196 which is only a cm taller than Kennedy - he could easily play a KP role.

Yeah I had Clark down earlier as a preference. So many people have talked him down lately that its made me a bit nervous over him.
I don't think I'd be too worried by a lot of the pub talk that goes on around young players on BF, mate.

Kennedy tends to stand out for me, mainly because he appears to have the strongest body and the best contested marking capacity (although Dowler isn't too bad in this regard either).

What are we to make, if anything, of the latest rumour floating around of Shaun Higgins getting the nod @ 6?

Frankly, if you're thinking about this type of player, one would think you would take Hurn @ 3 (although he could well go at 2 to Collingwood).

That being said, I'm sure his presence could only help the side, although it would seem surprising to be focusing on inside midfield at this point.

First choice - Kennedy

If Kennedy isnt availabe...I have a hunch we will go for Dowler at 3.
And then Hughes at 6.

That still fills up our FF and CHF for the next 10-12 years.

So it will be either Kennedy & Dowler....or.....Dowler & Hughes (well at least thats what Im hoping for!!!)

We can go for mids with 14,18,22...plenty to choose from.

Yeah I'd be very surprised if we went for another inside mid, its the only area we are completely covered and very strong in. We have Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis, and Sewell even, it'd seem crazy to get another.....

A couple of key position guys early, and then some pacy mids would be what I thought we should be basing our strategy around. Obviously take the best player, but this draft seems that even that you can go on a needs basis.

I wouldn't really consider Hodge as just an inside player same goes with Hurn, currently he has been playing Half back flank at Central Districs which isn't exactly a position to be a in and under, its more of a reciever position, Hurn just like Hodge has the ability to play as an in and under or as a reciever and is just as versatile, he also possess the same lethal weapon as Hodge which is his kicking.

i would take HURN at 3 if he is available.

or RYDER if hurn is gone.

we need the best available imo. and hurn could be something special.

reckon ryder could hold down chb and switch hit in the ruck if he doesnt make it there. remember ryder is bottom aged and has heaps of improvemnet in him.......... :D

if i had to guess, i reckon we will select ryder because collingwood will take hurn at #2.

I tend to agree with most of you great hawk suppoters, get 2 kpp, with pick 3 and 6, the best onballer available at 14, ruckman at 18 and the best player available at 22.

This may sound bad sportsman like, but I hope we play all the youngsters next year, for devolpment and experience, finish near the bottom, hopefully bottom and recruit bryce gibbs. This will have us in good stead to to really make a mark in 2007. Remember next year is the super draft, what do we achieve by finishing, 9,10, 11? bottom out again, and really make our mark when we get there and we will get there, no doubt about it!

Interested in hearing of peoples thoughts?

very hard reading this , but there isnt much i dont agree with. by trading hay away i think we have assured ourselves a bottom 4 finish but so much relies on injurys.........make our break so many teams seasons.

I don't agree with the "lose games for next year's draft" notion. But I do agree that when you're rebuilding you need to give some experience to the youngsters, and this costs some wins.

We now have a list that is strong at the younger end. If it gets too strong at that end, there'll be salary cap concerns along the way.

The rebuilding has been done very quickly and extremely well in my view. At the end of last season (2004), we had 14 players who would have gone into the new year aged 26 or over. This year, we'll have six. That's eight aging players replaced with youth. And very good youth too, in terms of draft selections.

Remembering that the true aim for any club has to be to make the finals year-in-year-out, what really counts is a club's ability to manage its list WHILE MAKING THE FINALS.

We need to play our Best 22 every week - with small allowances made to educate the real youngsters. And they need to learn to win.

If we win four games this year and pick up Mr.Megastar, then great. But if we get close to some strong sides a few times and win seven or eight games, it will start to give our best prospects a feeling of momentum.

Although I acknowledge it doesn't look likely, I don't think a finals appearance is out of the question for 2006. And that would give our young list best kind of experience available.
