Depending on the player and the pick number and also the strengh of the draft.

Depends who the player is obviously!

I would trade a 1st round pick for Judd but not for someone like Tarrant.

Before an idiot posts... no, we did not trade a 1st round pick for Polak (the predictability of BF is pathetic lol)

Would you prefer your club to trade an unwanted player for 1st round draft pick or an established 22 year old player?

Sounds like this is a thinly veiled comparison between the merits of recruiting Polak V a 1st round superdraft pick. I guess it depends on your Club culture and objectives. The Tiges always adopt extremely conservative recruiting philosophy, and often overlook much more talented players (e.g. Franklin) for the preceived "safer option", and are just content with mid-ladder finishes. They consider anything else as a bonus. The Pies did well to get a top-10 draft pick, but this was offset by ongoing questionable draft choices. I guess it's a scoreless draw with this example at least. :)

Honestly it really depends on what strengths and weaknesses your team has. For a relatively strong team that is at or near premiership contention the established 22 year old is probably gonna be more attractive. For a weaker team that problem has more deficiencies in their list they might prefer to take the draft pick, particularly if they need to fill in kpp's . Also it depends in what area on the ground your club is lacking. A club would be very fortunate to be able to get a good 22 year old ruckmen, key forward without paying a massive price, whereas a quality 22 year old midfielder would be a lot more likely.

I was happy when Melbourne traded a pick for Brent Moloney.

I also laughed at Richmond, considering they could have just accepted one pick from Geelong + Brent Moloney, instead of two picks in a weak draft (I think the one they got instead of Moloney was used on a guy who hasn't played a game yet too).

Would I trade pick 1 for Quinten Lynch? No
Would I trade pick 16 for Ryan Griffen? Yes

Need examples for this poll to work.

Both draft picks traded for Ottens have played footy. Moloney is a good midfielder but simply Richmond has enough of those, instead Richmond adopted a youth policy and drafted a ruckman and a wingman/HFF. Richmond traded a failing KPP for two 1st round draft picks, that'. s a handy return me thinks, especially as Moloney hasn't really been tearing it up on the football field but has been injured this year.

At the present time I would take an established player by that I mean, we need a classy midfielder (ready made) who can carry the ball and kick a big ball bursting drop punt 50+ metres up the field, that's on my wish list, I know it's a long shot but anything's possible, if we put our minds to it!

Picks mean nothing if they're used on average players. some drafts are very weak and that year was one of them.

Danny something wasn't it? The guy you guys took instead of getting Moloney?

Yeah now that I think about it, this is a dumb thread that I've started, too many variables...

If this was in Bay 13 we'd call it a dumb thread and give you sh1t because that's what you do there for no particular reason........lol!

In real terms though it's not a dumb thread just too difficult a question answer due to the variable as you said.

Yep, BF's so predictable you can pretty much organise your life by it...

Deledio, Griffen, Monfries, Franklin, Sherman, it's about five deep of good players, it's not a weak draft.

Moloney isn't that flash either, and has been ravaged with injuries. Richmond went with youth, and has midfielders coming out of it's ears.

they're hardly gun players though, potential aside, i mean, out of 80 odd picks of course you expect at LEAST 5 good/very good players, but overall it's one of the weakest drafts since 1997

5 deep - weak draft

p.s. Moloney finished in the top 5 of our best and fairest in his first season with us (at 21), and misseed the majority of 2006 (pre-season included) with both injury and lack of fitness. Has been super fit all pre-season thsi year and will be regularly seen bashing teh sh*t out of opposition midfielders in 2007.

Moloney is good, certainly better than Danny hughes or whatever his damn name is.

Meyer, you don't even know his name.

And how do you know that Moloney is better, Meyer is at least 3 years his junior, I say let the trade play out and see what happens, instead of bagging the kid just because of another. 2 1st round picks for a player who wanted out is a pretty good deal if you ask me.

Draft picks are a lottery.

Out of these in 2003:

10 Ryley Dunn
12 Ryan Murphy
19 David Mundy
27 Adam Campbell
43 Brett Peake

PS pick 8 Micheal Johnson

Who would you have first?

I personally would have Johnson followed by Peake.

Lottery for Fremantle. The other clubs seem to do fine on draft day, as for that list, Mundy, which makes sense because he is one of you earlier picks, so that isn't such a great example.

Wasn't Peake a father/son. In which case pick 43 is not a true indication of his value.

Johnson was a steal though and does show how haphazard late draft picks are.
