I’m with you.... now or never momentum is with us and AFLvic need to be told their attitude is not gunna be accepted, we refuse to be bullied an coerced into a system we don’t want to be a part of. They do not own the game!!

Interesting 3 1/2 page artcile in the biggest newspaper in the Melbourne on Saturday and in specific the point that the name VCFL is now owned by someone who may be looking to reform a body to represent country football.

Especially when they use kids as the anchor point. It is obvious that they do not care about country / district footy and they are using the future of our game, clubs and communities as bait. Very poor form.

A POWERFUL country football league will save almost $80,000 a year after it dramatically cut ties with the AFL.

Critics have warned a decision by AFL Victoria to expel the Picola District Football and Netball League from competition could have huge ramifications as other leagues look for ways to save cash and keep control of the grassroots game.

The PDFNL, which consists of 17 clubs, refused to sign an affiliation agreement on Monday that would have seen it relinquish administrative control to AFL Goulburn Murray, one of 13 region commissions set up under recommendations from a review into country footy in 2011.

Talks continue with a string of country leagues including Sunraysia, Bendigo, Murray, Central Highlands, Ovens and Murray and Nepean.

In a statement to its members on Tuesday the PDFNL claimed its insurance costs would drop from $117,000 to just $39,000 by going it alone.

However, it will lose access to TAC Pathway programs for promising seniors and Auskick support for juniors.

The issue could be further complicated if clubs within Picola decide they want to break away from the league and affiliate with AFL Goulburn Murray.

The Herald Sun understands staff from AFLGM were calling parents of junior players late on Tuesday and encouraging them to swap to an affiliated league.

“Country footy is at a crossroads,’’ Picola operations Manager Shane Railton said.

“Fines, ongoing requests and escalating costs, well beyond triple CPI, has removed people’s interest and willingness to be a part of the game.

“Other leagues will face the same ultimatum and fully intend to follow the same path.’’

AFL Victoria boss Steven Reaper said of the 71 leagues in country Victoria only a handful were yet to sign affiliation agreements, “demonstrating that the vast majority’’ were supportive.

He also clarified that in addition to insurance, the $117,000 annual bill covered football development management services, education and training, player pathway programs, the creation of statewide policies and funding opportunity costs.

He defended the actions of staff claiming AFL Goulburn Murray had been “proactive’’ following the league’s decision to split.

But the situation wasn’t sitting well with legends of the game on Tuesday.

Footy great Mal Brown was among those who warned the AFL must quit meddling with country and regional competitions.

“Most of these people running football are educated derelicts,’’ he said.

“The AFL is trying to take full control of the game but ultimately it will tear apart the fabric of community.’’

Victoria University Institute of Health and Sport research fellow Dr Matthew Klugman said Picola set an example that other leagues could follow.

“At the moment it’s a restructure from the top down and they (AFL) don’t appear to be listening or meeting the needs of clubs at the bottom,’’ Dr Klugman said.

Why scarp the cap but not the points? Won't that encourage clubs to chase juniors even more now?
Little point in having a system that only serves to penalise those who are honest enough to offer the true figures and potentially driving away sponsors hand volunteers.
Threats of having the right to inspect another companies financial records is ludicrous .

Good luck with this. Great to see someone has the balls to start telling AFLVIC to p**s off ,hopefully more will follow.

Never ever have I thought I’d put a framed photo of Waaia Bombers players on our farm office wall at Blighty but that photo on the front page of the Herald Sun and the page inside are going up!!!
Great photos of the fellas in their work gear and Waaia guernsey depicts the league perfectly!

What NW team is going to top up the SE ? @theroarisback you seem to have the answers?
Do think there will only be one club seek affiliation?

Why is this one team seeking affiliation different to the others? What makes their needs so different?

According to the club's president's comments in the press there are two main reasons - they don't want their bushranger squad player to have to go to another league (a bit odd that considering his brother spent time at the club his mother stated he would likely transfer too) so that is wanting to do what is 'the bes' for the individual rather than the whole, and also there was a comment made about financial factors - that they receive substantial money from AFL that the club is in dire need of (again weird comment when all other commentary is about how much $$ clubs will save and how much extra the league will be able to pass onto clubs from lower admin costs etc? are they getting some kind of special kickback money)

Kids shouldn't be being used/penalised/manipulated in the way they are in this situation - surely AFL GM should have negotiated with PDFNL the way they are with MFL

It doesn't make sense the boys involved would have to be ejected from the Murray Bushrangers as to play in TAC/Workplace Vic Championships etc players are cleared from their home club to the TAC cup etc system - so what is the issue - as whenever a transfer and clearance is approved the player then re-registers with the new club/organisation - the same as how SDJFL players do when they go and play for surrounding country clubs during bye rounds and vise versa - ie they transfer properly using the clearance system as opposed to playing as a permit player.

Are there not any players in the Bushrangers who are AFL NSW players as opposed to AFL Vic (ie not aligned to AFL Vic)?

My club is about my community and every kid in it. I’m rapt the league has more money we can now direct straight into programs to benefit all the kids not just a select few. Re-establish the junior program started a few years back this time with much better funding. It entailed leadership programs etc. Every child can benefit from leadership programs as we all have to lead our own lives and know how to make good choices. My mind is going crazy with ideas of programs to help not just the juniors but our coaches as well in a far more practical and efficient manner than we have now.

Time to look to all the opportunities this move opens up for all our small clubs and how we can maximise the positive impact we have on our communities.

While on the subject of $$ anyone listen to the jk and cardas show? Gleeson got asked about whether the GVFL were better off under the RAC given they have posted losses now going over $100000 for 2 years. Gleeson lost it so must have hit a nerve on that one :D I found the newspaper article about the losses. Why on earth you would want to be managed by the AFLGM RAC is beyond me.
What did we post a $80k profit for one year alone.

Hmm is this why Gleeson is putting so much pressure on the league he needs us to improve his average? o_O

His motives need investigating he hasn’t been fair with timelines at all.

Here's hoping the pdfnl board and the club presidents can all see common sense and reach an amicable outcome over the next couple of days and we don't find the league split up into factions - strength is in unity - then maybe later some accountability can be investigated.

Interesting to read the footy mag that come with the shepp paper today.
Rovers to finish on top and blighty third according to the experts. Gonna make the rivalry even more bigger when both teams are up and about, great to see.

Was it you who fed incorrect information to the jk and cardas show this morning about the presidents meeting ??? Hopefully not as thought you wanted the league to stay strong and united?
