Autopsy Pies beat the Cats, into the Preliminary Final!

I like to think Hawkins poor game was due to our solid defensive lineup and the constant pressure he was under, how often did he even get a clear lead at the football?

He mostly looked dangerous when the defenders were having to shuffle around to cover for Rougheads absence.
While on Hawkins... is there a rule that says he can’t be free kicked for pushing in the back? Does it in just about every marking contest, never gets penalised.

He played 98% game time (v Hawkins 93%) and didn't actually have too many sessions in the ruck (hard to tell given there were only 20 center bounces but Wills had more of the around the ground stoppages I thought) so not too sure about that.

I got very excited pre-match when I heard they dropped Stanley. I heard the rumour hear first on BF, and instantly posted that it would suit us.

The cats already dropped Henderson, and were now going to also move out their best key defender. It just seemed to me that Geelong was changing to suit us...when they were ultimately top seed and should've just gone in with the structure that got them there. We clearly had them worried.

Even if it rained, it was a recipe for disaster. To drop your best ruckman against the competitions premiers ruckman was foolish beyond words.

In terms of Hawkins, he only looked a bit dangerous when Roughead had to go into the ruck, or Roughead got lost in transition. On a few occasions, Darcy Moore was also resting, which left our defence a bit short. But when we had our proper structure in place, he was well contained.

It's another example why we need to bring in Reid this week, because he can play the 2nd ruck role and allow us to hold our defensive structure.

Richmond's flag to lose now.
Funny they don’t over frighten me.

WC could best them or Geelong.
Or us.

They’ve been vulnerable at times this year.

Pressure them.

Get the ball. Use it well.

We were amazing in that first half and would have blown any lesser team completely out of the water. I knew 5 minutes into the first that we'd come to play, and if we continue in this vain I fear no side in this finals series.

Selwood and Scott irritate me but to be fair Geelong aren't soft, quite the opposite. They are a good side and proved themselves to be as such on Friday night against us. They deserve respect for fighting until the end and for managing to turn the game into a contest. Our injuries and reduced rotations gave them a hint of a chance, and they took it. That's what good sides do.

People here would have been reaching for the pitchforks if our selections had backfired the way Geelong's did or if Buckley had carried on the way Scott did during the lead up to the game.
yep the first half was very similar to the prelim against Richmond, Geelong fought back much better. That may have been aided by us losing 2 players in the first half and basically having to play hold the lead though

Congratulations on the win.

Here are the midfield frequency stats from the game. This is an overall summary of how often your players were lining up as one of the 5 mids at bounces.

Collingwood are through to the Preliminary Final after defeating Geelong by 11 points. The Magpies were in front for the whole game, despite going scoreless in the final term, and lost two rotations on the interchange bench for the entire duration of the second half. Scoreboard pressure proved too much for the Cats, and some incredible smothers and crucial marks from the Woods in defence allowed them to prevail and have the week off.

Collingwood got their statistical gains from disposals by +54 (382 - 328), kicks were +51 (240 - 189), handballs were won by +3 (142 - 139), while uncontested possessions had a differential of +76 (242 - 166), and +8 for intercept possessions (74 - 66). Marks were won by +49 (123 - 74), uncontested marks had a reading of +53 (111 - 58), and Marks Inside 50 was +1 (7 - 6). Hit-outs were won by a margin of +21 (48 - 27), +6 for stoppage clearances (34 - 28), while tackles were won by +22 (97 - 75), and Tackles Inside 50 had a positive differential of +8 (16 - 8). Geelong won their categories from contested possessions by +21 (157 - 136), clearances were won by +1 (39 - 38), centre clearances had a differential of +7 (11 - 4), while Contested Marks were +4 (16 - 12), and +7 for Inside 50's (50 - 43).

Steele Sidebottom (33 disposals @ 64%, 572 metres gained, 7 contested possessions, 26 uncontested possessions, 2 intercept possessions, 27 kicks, 6 handballs, 15 marks, 5 tackles, 2 score involvements, 3 clearances, 3 stoppage clearances, 7 Inside 50's & 1 goal) displayed great work ethic to link up his team's ball movement with his marking, and provided territory in the forward half with his ball use.

Tom Phillips (29 disposals @ 59%, 607 metres gained, 6 contested possessions, 23 uncontested possessions, 5 intercept possessions, 24 kicks, 5 handballs, 9 marks, 4 tackles, 3 score involvements, 3 Inside 50's & 4 Rebound 50's) blended Sidebottom perfectly to provide a marking option for his teammates on the wing, while contributing significantly to the team's ball movement in the forward half.

Adam Treloar (28 disposals @ 75%, 235 metres gained, 8 contested possessions, 20 uncontested possessions, 11 kicks, 17 handballs, 5 marks, 9 tackles, 5 score involvements, 6 clearances, 6 stoppage clearances & 2 Inside 50's) generated fluent and effective link-up play from contests with his handpasses, while his kicking was tidy.

Taylor Adams (26 disposals @ 50%, 399 metres gained, 16 contested possessions, 10 uncontested possessions, 16 kicks, 10 handballs, 3 marks, 9 tackles, 3 Tackles Inside 50, 3 score involvements, 9 clearances, 8 stoppage clearances, 3 Inside 50's, 2 Rebound 50's & 2 goals) showed his hardness inside the contest by winning the contested ball and clearing from stoppages, while laying effective tackles to neutralise Geelong's ball movement, and capped off his game by impacting the scoreboard with a couple of goals.

Scott Pendlebury (24 disposals @ 83%, 321 metres gained, 9 contested possessions, 15 uncontested possessions, 5 intercept possessions, 14 kicks, 10 handballs, 8 marks, 9 tackles, 3 score involvements, 4 Inside 50's & 1 goal) had a vintage match in his 300th game, with his trademark composure and poise standing out like a beacon.

Brodie Grundy (21 disposals @ 71%, 147 metres gained, 15 contested possessions, 6 uncontested possessions, 2 intercept possessions, 11 kicks, 10 handballs, 47 hit-outs, 4 marks, 5 tackles, 7 score involvements, 7 clearances & 7 stoppage clearances) dominated his ruck contests against Geelong's part-timers to enable Adams, Treloar, Pendlebury & Sidebottom first-use, while winning his own ball to clear it from within contests.

Jeremy Howe (23 disposals @ 74%, 601 metres gained, 5 contested possessions, 18 uncontested possessions, 10 intercept possessions, 19 kicks, 4 handballs, 13 marks, 2 score involvements, 10 Rebound 50's & 1 goal) put on an aerial clinic to play an integral role in his side's victory, while generating major transition from defence.

Darcy Moore (17 disposals @ 65%, 298 metres gained, 11 contested possessions, 6 uncontested possessions, 12 intercept possessions, 12 kicks, 5 handballs, 9 marks, 3 Contested Marks, 2 tackles & 7 Rebound 50's) got the team over the line with season-defining marks which he was able to intercept in defence.

Brayden Maynard (16 disposals @ 69%, 401 metres gained, 8 contested possessions, 8 uncontested possessions, 9 intercept possessions, 12 kicks, 4 handballs, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 3 Inside 50's & 4 Rebound 50's) played an impressive game where he won his battle against Gary Ablett, before peeling off to win his own ball from defence.

Jaidyn Stephenson (18 disposals @ 78%, 253 metres gained, 6 contested possessions, 12 uncontested possessions, 2 intercept possessions, 11 kicks, 7 handballs, 10 marks, 2 Marks Inside 50, 2 goal assists, 5 score involvements, 4 Inside 50's & 1 goal) had an immediate impact upon his return at AFL level. Stephenson presented at the ball carrier at all times to take his marks, while chiming in with an early goal that lifted the whole side.

Jamie Elliott (18 disposals @ 72%, 228 metres gained, 9 contested possessions, 9 uncontested possessions, 3 intercept possessions, 13 kicks, 5 handballs, 7 marks, 2 Contested Marks, 2 Marks Inside 50, 2 tackles, 2 Tackles Inside 50, 4 score involvements, 2 Inside 50's & 2 goals) complimented Stephenson with his lead-ups at the footy, and ended up with two crucial majors.

Collingwood's next game will be on September 21 at the MCG against GWS Giants. Grand Final spot is up for grabs. Make it count and progress to the premiership decider with belief and confidence.
