Pendles
Gavin Brown

No necessarily in order. Bar O’Dea Greening likely would be best ever. Tuddy can go in for Carmen if we count what he did but Carmen could have been anything except for the brain. This is off top of the head so have probably forgotten someone

Hard to argue with that other than personal preferences around Richardson - Brown - Moore - Wright. I'd probably go Moore and Wright. Millane often gets a mention in these lists but I think that's often skewed by his story and he's down a rung.

No Swan/Pendles. They are easily in for mine
You could make a case for a dozen more but I had already picked my top 3 all time mids, 4 if you count Tuddy.

It comes down to Tony Shaw vs Pendles or Swan and Tony Shaw gets you across the line every time. I don't have the same confidence in Swan though he may be more talented, and as silky as Pendles is, Shaw is the better leader.

Nobody seems to have Picken and he was our best finals player along with Twiggy Dunne.

Best team you've seen is a nightmare:

Brown McCormack Clement
Buckley Picken Morwood

Thompson Swan Richardson
Pendlebury Shaw Millane

Dunne Carman Greening
Daicos McKenna De Goey

Wearmouth Barham Tuddenham P Moore

Port might well have lifted in the 2nd quarter but it was our inaccuracy more than anything that cost us and a prime example of how dangerous missing relatively simple shots on goal can be.

Our misses effectively allowed them to gain and then retain momentum when we could have stopped it dead.

What should have seen an advancement of 6 points on the scoreboard ended up being an 11pt turnaround to what could have been and it's a killer when the opposition gets a run of goals only greeted by behinds.

Let's not push our luck for a 3rd week running Pies.

I want rivers of Blue blood.

In order:

Carman
Greening
Buckley
Thompson
W Richardson
McKenna
Picken
Daicos
A Shaw
Tuddenham/Millane/Brown

Excitement machines:

Wearmouth
Barham
You’re really brave putting them in order.

Agree. Half of them I can't really comment on, but I'd have them well above Shaw, Brown, Millane.
I think the best start is with players one has seen.

From there a bit of historical research and knowledge one can start judging those giants that went before us.

Eg:
Coventry Brothers, Collier Brothers, Dick Lee, Dick Condon, Jack Regan etc etc etc

Done off the top of my head. Moore definitely goes in for Browny. Sorry Browny enjoyed watching you more than any Pie.

Oh if I had to venture the five best players I’ve seen they are both in that group.

Len Thompson
Phil Carman
Peter Daicos
Nathan Buckley
Scott Pendlebury
I’m feeling very jolly so I’ll see if I can take my top 5 seen by me and add 5 for a top 10 seen by me:

I like referring to the Tony's as A. too. Very formal. :p

Apparently I saw the Coventry Brothers.

I have met Harry Collier. When he was very old, he was quite the character.
Also the widow Kyne once. Long after Phonse departed.
That’s my stretch. I’m thinking of other really older Magpies, but I think they are the ones stretching the furthest back in time.

Listen to my granny talk about Des Tuddenham as a young buck, that was after she had seen a lot of footy... lol.

My granny saw Gordon Coventry playing in the flesh, and she is still going...

Yes, absolutely. Looks better on the eye to, to name them formally. It’s professional looking.

This will sound bizarre, but I like naming sides by position where it looks right.
Not the way they jumble it sometimes these days all haphazard.

I also like the Followers to be designated “R” the Interchange “I” it looks neat and is simple to understand.

“E” for emergencies but should be obvious it’s not the team.

I've seen A. Shaw but not A. Francis. I'm pretty sure he's just a Tony.

I remember as a very young kid dad showing me pictures of his heroes - all in black and white of course - otherwise known as 'the machine'. Stories of their legendary hardness at ball and men.

That team was the birthplace of Collingwood power and the hatred that it generated in every non Collingwood heart.

Dad was there every Saturday, standing in the outer and cheering the lads on and drinking in those 4 flags in a row.

How lucky can you can get?
