That is a myth perpetuated by the fact that according to the media, there has never been a player to come out of contract that wasn't offered a huge deal by Collingwood.

Of the big names traded in recent years, we've thrown our hat in the ring for two of them - Nathan Brown and Chris Judd.

In both cases, the player chose his destination before the trade period and we were never given a real chance to deal.

Name me one instance in which we actually prevented a deal from going through with a player who wanted to come from the club by refusing to offer a FAIR price.

Yes, we have refused to be bent over a barrel in a trade (i.e. the Nick Stevens deal, where Port were asking for Didak & pick 17), and we have even overpaid in some deals, but rarely have we actually missed out because of our refusal to meet the price.
Last year when Judd met with Carlton and asked them what they would be offering West Coast as part of the proposed trade they said pick 3 and Kennedy to start.

Apparently the Collingwood response to Judds question of what his forner side could expect in return was "dont worry about that we will get it done".

Judd chose Carlton and while there were many factors at play, one reported back to the Eagles by Judds management was that Collingwood seemed to have put much less effort into a fair compensation package for the Eagles and it was more likely that dealing with Collingwood would fallover and Judd could end up in the PSD.

In summary, it was Judds view that West Coast had less chance of a decent deal with Collingwood than Carlton as the Pies didnt seem to give a shit about compensating West Coast fairly.

Now, we got bent over by the Blues, but no-one in Perth believes Collingwood would have done a better deal.

Stop mentioning our players....lol.

what do pies fans honestly think Didaks value is?
The biggest problem with any trade involving Didak is that his value to the club is far greater than his value as a trade.

A very simple and logical financial strategy is "don't sell an asset for less than it's value to you".

While what you say is probably true, you have to realise that what one side would consider a fair deal another would consider too high a price and vice versa. You are comparing what Carlton were prepared to offer, from the position of a leaderless, poorly coached rabble being groomed in the art of losing for benefit to Collingwood a Final 4 side, bristling with young talent, a solid mid aged core and still good leadership and coaching staff.

A guy on death row would give you anything he has to give to get out of the chair. That does not mean he paid the market price or that anyone offered under the odds.

I don't quite get this analogy. What is the market price for escaping death?
The analogy is that we were a top 4 side last year and this year, despite not having Judd we've still finished top 6.

Carlton were a bottom 4 side last year and without Judd would still have been a bottom four side. Carlton were more desperate for Judd than we were.

Plus you're assuming that it was his altruistic desire to do the best thing for the club he was walking away from (well, the best thing other than hang around), rather than the bigger $$ at the Cardboard Cartel Football Club that swung Juddy's decision.

Judd went to Carlton because they were willing to offer him more than a million per year and do a deal with VISY that pays him to endorse something that he has absolutely nothing to do with, or any idea about, to get him even more cash.

Collingwood were never given the opportunity to deal. That is not a situation in which we failed to make an adequate deal. We assured him that we would get the deal done. He decided to go for the contract Carlton offered.

Try again.

That's the point. Carlton were not paying market price, were they.
The were willing to pay anything they could get away with to escape "death" or another 15 years in the spoon drawer.

Collingwood and I will bet a few other clubs were and still are not in that situation and were looking at Judd's true value...and that is what they would have offered.

I have a pretty good understanding of what transpired and to be fair you and VV are pretty well there. He wanted to come to the Pies (no question about that), Carlton knew that and used their trump which was pick 3 which would always have WCE more interested. Swan also had personal rapport with Judd. Pies did offer Fraser to Richmond and in principle it was accepted until Fraser got cold feet. Hence when Judd asked Collingwood how they could match Carltons offer they didnt have an answer and hence Judd became nervous that he would get caught in the middle (understandable). Judd could have played tough but didnt want to do that to Carlton - nor did his mgr. WCE were happy with that as they didnt see Carlton as a threat and werent keen to make Collingwood stronger (I dont think any of us expected Judd to make the difference he did). The money was not a problem for either club.
