Interesting take on things.
Jmo but I think it's absolutely nothing to do with him except that he's a warm and vertical big guy who can get in the way when he can make it to a contest. We've won 5 games and kicked a lot of goals and he hasn't managed one. So as long as we accept he offers nothing offensively that's ok.

To be fair he always looks like he's under some sort of pressure . If we were losing I think his time's up but while we keep winning you can make the case.

Then you have the issue of who you replace him with. Fort's better imo but a few can't see that at the moment.

Agreed, if he's just in there to be a defensive forward though then I'd prefer Gardiner, if he's good to go. He can at least run and kick a few.

And you would have wanted wasting Hippy in the ruck in the second half when he was marking everything inside 50?
One thing I don't ever want is Hipwood in the ruck.

Let him get over his injury issue and play his natural game . He'snot a robust body like Day or even McStay. Or a genius at wining the ball somehow like Joe.

That is the dilemma we are having though isn’t it?
Oscar needs a chop out with someone capable, or we end up going down the path of the dogs and rob Peter to pay Paul by playing someone like Dunks or Cal AhChee in the ruck.
Yuk!

So back to Fort right? For what it's worth I think Fort ruck, Big O Ruck/forward is the best combo we can run. I do worry about the Big O's longevity. I agree, rucks a brutal role.

Well we need a second ruck. Joe going in at least left Hippy forward but it leaves Logan with the best defender

So not answering my request for a direct quote, just putting words in my mouth. Cool.

I take your point, sauce but I’m not sure Gardiner would give us much more than Day. Certainly, if he tears it up in the twos, I’d be willing to give him a go, but at this stage I don’t see anyone on our list who can ruck/forward better than Day.

Is what Day is doing enabling others to score? If so then he's playing his role.

I think Smith eventually displaces him but all we can ask from him is to play his role and I think he is doing that despite not being THE guy long term.

Big O for Day? Fort ruck?

I'm not sure how you quantify enabling others to score? Goal assists?

Last year @ round 5 we won 2 lost 3 so you would think the points against us in 2025 would be lower, but they are not.
2024: Points against 373 to this year 405 (+32)

With 5 wins this year our points for should be higher and they are.
2024; Points for 421 to this year 486 (+65)

On a very basic level our forwards are doing slightly better (minus Joe) and our backs a little down (minus Starcevich).
Lots of variables though.

Hi Nunez 👋

That’s what people used to say about McStay when he would have 6 disposals in a game and not score. If it was good enough for Dan then it is good enough for Sam.

PS. Day had zero goal assists yesterday, but his running patterns and ability to drag a defender away from contests may be proving valuable.

I'm leaning towards dropping Day and have been all season however, Smith and Fort have no where near the forward craft and experience Day has, I'm sure he's doing a lot of structural things that those 2 can't do and therefore making everyone else better.

Its entirely possible we drop him and our forward line becomes less functional.

I think the big variable is that we didn't have Ah Chee down there , Bailey in form dangerous around goals , still hadn't worked out where to play Rayner , and Zorko pinpointing it in from the backline ,no Ashcroft and a McCluggage in form.

So there's dozens of goals there compared to the first 5 games last year.

Personally I doubt he's dragging anyone anywhere 3KZ but whilst we're winning it doesn't matter.

Exactly. For Day to be marked, let alone heavily enough to drag someone away, he’d have to be a goal scoring threat. This season he hasn’t even got out goal, so I don’t think the defense will be worried too much about anything he does because nothing screams out impact or critical cog in the machine whatsoever.

Could Fort, McInerney or even Gardiner or Smith do anything he does even better? I’d like to find out.
