Dal Santo would probably not leave St.Kilda but we have to make our intentions clear to the player before he re-signs.
Collingwood have always been perceived at chasing a big name and having a lot of cash to splash but the reality is that the player agents use Collingwood as a tool to get more $$$ for there players come contract negotiation time.
I think it is pretty obvious that the agents give Collingwood a word that a players out of contract. Collingwood express some interest and tell the club their players are currently at that Collingwood are interested and could pay big money for them. The club then rings Collingwood asking if it is true that they are interested and the club with the player involved starts s***ting themselves a bit.
With alot of devious agents (Ron Joseph) they also give clubs like Collingwood and the media the idea that they are really close to getting the player.
Now I'm not sure if I got the facts completely right as I don't follow soccer too closely but Michael Owen and his manager used the line that Owen would get more at Real Madrid quite easily than what he gets at Liverpool to get more cash. Eventually Liverpool gave in and Owen didn't really want to leave Liverpool, but they decided he was almost at the peak of his career so they might as well sell him for as much $ as they can. In other words they called his bluff.
