10 years and it still looks the same as it did in the first round.
they should be making quantum leaps in skill level

watch brisbane and you'll see where the skill level is at. we are years behind the top clubs.

do any of the girls ever go back outside after training and do some kick to kick? I remember kicking a ball with my mates for hours..... or do they rush to the next photo opportunity?

If you looked at any contest, the carlton girls outnumbered us every time. Are we fit or just hopeless?

Looked promising early with the first two goals of the game, but it was a struggle after that.

Maybe I'm being premature, but it looks like it's going to be another long season for the girls.

Full time.

Carlton 7.3.45
Collingwood 3.3.21

Goals: Frederick, Porter, Centra

Disposals: Bonnici 21, Cann 17, Remmos 17, White 14, Patterson 14, Schleicher 13, Howarth 12, Barnett 12, Runnells 11

AF Points: Bonnici 124, Barnett 75, Schleicher 72, Cann 70, Frederick 65

Patterson a shining light

Centra? Meh
What's the point of Centra playing forward, and not in the midfield? This is a player who got 47 possessions in a game and we have her at HF, wasting away.
There's no point having Centra play inside F50, because our girls can't hit a pass to a forward. Just play Centra in the midfield ....

I think we all understand where we are at. Rebuilding, which is fine.

But there was def some good signs.
Impressive debut from Patterson. And while she didn't see too much of it, some of the things you saw from Ash, you could see she'll be a star.

Looks like Kelly Ann hurt her shoulder. That must have been the incident near me, got some treatment by some blues players on the wing.

Ruby and Brit did what they could. We missed Bri

We certainly lack some KPP up forward, rather than just sabrina, I always hope my breath.

Down back its basically all down to Cronin without Livingstone.

Was just about to say clubs like Brisbane, North and Adelaide are playing entertaining footy. It’s just our women’s side that seems no better than day 1. Centra in the middle please, no point having her forward when we can’t get the ball there.

Apparantely we are easing Ash in through her hip complaint. Only played 60%
Coach said it'll take her a few weeks to get to full fitness
That explain leaving her Forward

Also missing the 2 Practice Game so not played with new teammates

spot on.
We have a lot of expectation on her, but she'll get better as the season goes on.

Get the managing minutes, but surely play her half-forward rather than full-forward, barely could get near it. The touch she got up on the wing when she did get out showed a glimpse of her ability with a spin, look and then well-weighted execution.

Give her the ball in that 40-60 range and let her cook. Forwards won't know that's hit them (well they will, it will be the ball surprisingly lace-out lol).

Patterson was herself, just a tough bugger, will bring effort but also some speed which is important. Though Howarth was very good too given her time out.

Unfortunately most of our 'better' players in terms of senior ones are tough as nails but butcher the ball.

I seem to say this every year - has the footy gone past Frederick?

I agree with those commenting on our seeming lack of recruiting talls. Or are they injured?

We are in rebuild, as I reminded myself on the way to the game. So green shoots are what we’re looking for and they are there. Violet Patterson. And Centra, though she had very little of it, also limited TOG.

To finish with a whinge - this is the tenth game against Carlton, and all have been played at Ikon other than once at Vic Park? Please correct me if I’m wrong - but this inequity is seared into my brain.

Although the venue would not have made much difference to last night’s outcome.

spot on.
We have a lot of expectation on her, but she'll get better as the season goes on.
Why didn't they play her off HB then, to get her involved in the game, if she isn't capable of playing midfield?
She looks like one of only a few in the team that looks capable of kicking the ball well to a teammate.
She would’ve had alot of the ball last night as Carlton had it o their F50 85% of the time...

We had the one win last season, l thought we would win 4 to 5, but after last night, l think 2 to 3 wins would be a good effort...

I thought Carlton moved the ball well, they changed the angles of kicks, and were able to move the ball well through the middle, and hit up a leading forward.
We never changed the angle of our kicks, it was just get the ball and kick it down the line, 30 metres in the air, 20 metres in distance.
I'm not sure if its a skill level thing that they can't change the angle of kicks, or they're instructed not too.
In saying that though, if we tried to kick the ball into the corridor more, we would turn it over, and get scored against.
It's only one game, hopefully we see a better performance next weekend at Vic Park...

The whole competition lacks skill and athleticism. It'll take 50 years at this rate before they're anywhere near a decent standard. One of the most disappointing competitions in the world of sport.
Nah that’s just a rubbish potshot at the league.

14/18 sides play at what I’d consider an acceptable standard for where the comp is at in its early development, and the top five or so are genuinely good. Our program is pitiful and has been going backwards at an alarming rate. The worst thing in all this is Carlton are also in that bottom four that I’d consider unacceptable. We’re abysmal and I’d argue we’ve been getting steadily worse since about Season 5.

The AFLW U18s champs game on the weekend was a higher standard than the first half of last night.

It’s no surprise that the teams with the young talent are the ones moving up. After the “Big 4” monopolised the talent, it was a struggle for the rest so those with draft concessions or could get extra picks are now benefiting. We need to do the opposite to the men’s and go picks over players.

I can comfortably say that I would take anyone in say the top 30-40 over probably 1/3 to 1/2 of our list. There’s issue then falls on development, can we do it?

We’ve got a very soft draw due to last season. When I did the ladder predictor the other day, I had us on three wins equal on the bottom with GC and GWS. Carlton was on four wins alongside a few more teams.

IMO about 3 seasons ago

We have way too many small / light players

I’m not sure we have ever understood how to build an AFLW list

There were a number of players after Centra that we should have also been targeting to add to our draft haul / re-build
- the one the Blues drafted is one / can’t remember the other

We don’t have athletic strong KPP - especially in F50

Cronin looks likely but needs lots of help

Well l said after last season l would have traded out Bonnici and Schleicher, to get in a couple more early draft picks, to go with our number 1 pick. Then l would have taken Ash as midfielder, drafted a good young key forward and a good young key back to replace Livingstone. I love how Bonnici and Schleicher try, but they just butcher the ball.
Last night they had around 35 possessions between them, and l can't remember one of them hitting up a forward. They're playing in the midfield, yet their disposal isn't doing much for the team. Love their efforts, but the poor skill and execution of their disposals detracts from those efforts...

Only saw the 1st qtr, and just displayed the lack of poise, awareness and skill we lacked compared to the blues. As already stated we lack a few kpp with the required ability to win games. We kicked 2 goals in the first 5-7 minutes and managed 1 more after that, not an ideal start to season.

Our first list wasn’t bad. Included a few very good players who later left us, including our first ruck Emma? and Jas Garner. Then we got Molloy the next year and she eventually left us too - for well documented reasons. I don’t think we ever fully recovered, especially from the raids on us at the end of 2018.

I sponsored a couple of our girls in 2017 and 2018. Not sure the club was a very happy place for them in the early years. And nor am I sure the club took it as seriously as other early AFLW clubs.

The outs we had last night would have helped - but not confident we would have won. Our problems are structural.

People were probably expressing similar thoughts after R0 in the men’s. It’s a long season so I look forward to seeing how we evolve across it.

I think Mattea Breed was a big loss last night. If she played this season l'm sure she would be our best mid, because she can actually use the ball...

Agree, and we definitely want to see improvement this year. That's why l think if we win 3 games that would be a positive step forward, whilst seeing Centra, Patterson, Clark, Cronin etc taking big steps in their development...

I watched the coach's assessment yesterday and i know that he has to be positive. However, I didnt think we showed any level of cohesion except for infrequent 10 second passages of play. I love Ruby's attitude but she just slammed it on the boot. It went directly to goal every time. She seems more intent on tackling than getting the ball first. On a number of occasions, I saw situations where carlton players were in the majority and they kicked it down the field to situations where they were also in the majority. The pie players were somewhere else. The biggest differential that I could see between the two teams was their ability to actually kick the ball with some level of precision.

I hope that he's right and there's a few minor things to correct and a few star players to get back. Obviously star players are more important in AFLW because of their impact on the game. I hope that the 5 new players are the beginning of something better. It will take time. I hope this is finally the start of something longterm.
