Carlton had a bounce under a new coach which lasted appropriately 10 games, until it all came unstuck and they returned to the same old Carlton the second half of the season. And at end of the season they sacked more players than we did and made another raid on GWS players to replace the GWS players they raided the previous season, who found themselves sacked this season. Great strategy, but go on believing they have it right and we have it wrong, because of your blind prejudice against the coaching staff at Collingwood.
Ha ha Carlton and their Boy Scout coach
And Silvagni the lazy one, just goes to the reject shop.

The gift that keeps giving

Okay, now we are making progress.

What else should we be measuring progress on?

Quality of list. The list we had at end of 2012 was never going to win another flag. Jolly, Ball, Johnson, Didak, Brown, Maxwell were all past their best and others lacked the kicking skills to match the best teams. The sacrifices we made (in draft picks) to get Wood, Jolly, and Ball meant that we did not have the depth to replace them with young talent.

We are now better placed to challenge for a flag in the next few years than we were in 2012 despite our ladder position. We could have done a North Melbourne and hung around prelim finals for a while longer, but eventually we would have had to take a hit. Norths have at the end of this year and will suffer for a while now in terms of ladder position.

Best time of the year to play them. Premiers are often undercooked and overcelebrated by rd1. Good morale booster too.
Any time is good time to play the dogs, The pies had them on toast twice in 16, Injuries robed us the first time, And I recently watched the late season game at ETIHAD, I counted 25 Bulldogs on the field, absolute criminals the maggots were that night. Round 1 2017 Buckley will have the guys that wound up the dogs will be running around with WTF faces on.

Does first place on the ladder get to play finals? If so, then I agree with the premise of this thread.
Even 7th on the ladder can play finals and from there on , anything is possible. I think we could make that spot ours.

These things are a work in progress.
It's not a McDonald's drive through fast food service, straight to finals,
You have to work super hard.
We are going in the right direction.
List changing and you ones playing leads to finding a better team.

2017 is as good a year to start some serious business
Richmond's next flag is quicker than some of those drive ins

Those that believe list building is not important and moving up ladders just happens, fair enough.

There is only one direction to me, build a better list.
The ladder position takes care of itself if (and it's an if) the list build is correct.

If we are bringing in and developing players like:

Grundy, Moore, Treloar, De Goey, Maynard, Scharenberg, Adams, Aish etc etc etc

And it works well, then we will win big prizes, if not, we'll be like 16 other sides each year.

For me, so what if we finish lower or wherever if it's the big goal in mind.
It's not like finishing mid table is a flag.

Build build build then hope for the best
Add to that bit of luck with injury wouldn't go astray either

Because we get monstered by injuries every year TRY to stay with the group now . . . .
Dogs got monstered by injuries in 2016. Injuries are a fact of life. Good teams/clubs can overcome them.

Seems the consensus is "we could finish 8th IF we stay injury free". That glass is 1/4 full.

If we can keep players on field this season i would be a little disappointed with 8th.

Despite all the list changes I can't see that we've strengthened the list a whole heap for 2017, so we're reliant on internal development (coaching, youth/experience, injuries) for improvement. While there's certainly a heap of ability and means for this to occur we'll need most things to go right as all clubs will hold a hope of internal improvement and some clubs have certainly strengthen their lists. Overall I'm not as optimistic about 2017 as I was going into the previous couple of seasons and I think our potential ladder range sits at 7-14, but we're more likely to finish 10-12.

Exactly, need some of these highly talented kids to start delivering on the promise they show.

Add a few blokes back from injury, and it isn't unreasonable to expect improvement. Think Wells replaces Swanny who was badly missed this year, we potentially don't lose too much in the Dunn v Brown/Frost discussion, Mayne could be hit or miss but certainly isn't a Cloke replacement, while WHE could be anything. The draft clearly had an eye to the future and expectations should be low in 2017, Schade the possible exception.

Overall, I think we've improved the list, just have to wait and see if it's enough to warrant finals expectations, or whether 2017 is just the year we start the long climb back.

Where do you have us on the quality of list ladder then? I presume this also factors in "list potential". If you come first do they give you a cup for this?
