So we got a decent turn out of blue and white, it would have been a full house if the league actually bothered to have a system to onsell seats reserved for people who dont bother turning up. And since we need a Victorian alternative to the Bellerive games, how likely/possible is it that we could play low drawing games at Princes/Ikon Park?
This has been covered before, and the answers tend to be around that its not fit for AFL games e.t.c, but if it is acceptable for AFLW, what would actually be needed to make that jump for it to be usable for mens games?

not charging $17 for half a chicken burger would be a start.

For most people, it is easier to get to Mars Stadium (Ballarat), Kardinia Park, QEO (Bendigo), Lavington and Punt Road.

Brown paper bag stadium is only convenient to those who live within a walk of that craphole, otherwise impossible for the vast majority.

Bulldoze every stand and start again. That is all.

Playing games at Princes Park is not the solution to the massive revenue shortfall when we depart Tasmania. Even if it improved substantially or suddenly found itself on a major public transport hub accessible to everyone, I doubt that we'd be able to make significant money from playing there.

I'm all for a boutique 30k stadium, but you might as well just build a brand new own instead of Princes Park. There's no seating at all at the Royal Pde end, the Ald Gardiner Stand is condemned, there isn't enough seating where the Hawthorn Stand was or where the Heroes Stand is and the Legends Stand needs a big spruce up.

This is all true, and it's a fact that the only mildly appropriate seating, the Legends Stand, needs replacing. The seats are very tired and many are broken. And it is incredibly frustrating the way people come up the stairs and stand there looking for available seating and block the view of everyone trying to watch the game.

But above all else, I think Carlton surrendered their priority to be the go-to inner suburban community ground for AFLW when they took away viewing areas to build their concrete block administration and training facilities so close to the playing arena.

It might be sacrilege to even suggest this, but I think if multi millions of dollars were to be spent building a boutique stadium to be shared by all Melbourne clubs, then Victoria Park would make for a better brownfield option. Collingwood effectively abandoned it so there is no reason it can't be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. There is ample amount of space on the site all the way around, as opposed to Arden St and Punt Rd, which are both hemmed in by major roads on one side and modern and very much required facilities on the other side. Victoria Park is also well-serviced by the train line.

Especially as that "magnificent" money grabbing, paper bag multiple dollar deliveries to players, club Carlton, would want to take more than a disproportionate share of surplus revenue. In fact all of it.

It was fine as a ground when you could actually sit in more than half of it

Now that one stand is roped off and the other is gone for that clubs admin and fitness it is not up to standard for an AFL game.

Pre season AFL and AFLW regular season games are perfect for it. No more than that.

It could have been and was back in the day much better.

Yes I agree, it is okay for AFLW home and away games. Not finals though.

Whoever designed the Legends Stand in the 90s needs a good hard look at themselves. In an era where stadiums were/are built with the crowd feeling like they're on top of the game, an all-seat stand that goes so far back with little elevation is a shocker. If you're at the back of the Legends Stand with a medium/tall bloke in front of you, good luck seeing anything.

And as you say, there's literally nowhere else to sit. On top of that, traffic around the cemetery and zoo is always awful, Royal Park station is too far away, and parking is poor. Bottom line - it's a dump. So I'd be looking for somewhere else and start all over again.

The proposed E-Gate Stadium would have been perfect.

Had some initial support as part of a world cup bid but then Govt became worried about cost. Timing is everything, canning the Comm Games and general dire financial situation in Vic Govt, would make this hard to get across the line now.

Who knows, if it had some commercial backers, retail, housing etc attached to it. Maybe.

Perfect spot for us!

REJECTED PROPOSAL

E-Gate Stadium Melbourne

E-Gate Stadium was a proposed new Australian football ground located on rail yards next to North Melbourne station. The stadium was first mooted around 2009 as a solution for third 'boutique' AFL stadium in Melbourne capable of hosting lower-drawing matches. Its seating capacity was planned to be around 27,000. There was also talk it could be modified into a 44,000-capacity rectangular stadium for Australia's FIFA World Cup bid - freeing Docklands for the AFL. The concept designs showed the majority of seating on one side of the field with a three-tier grandstand and a single tier of seating on the other side of the ground. Talk of the new stadium went quiet and it never proceeded.

Legends Stand back in the 90’s was dumb simply because you were looking into the winter sun

I guess the other side to any development not funded by state government or AFL is that we end up back with that hideous situation of Ian Collins-led superannuation funds owning our home ground stadium and charging insane fees to use it.
