If the St Kilda v Port Adelaide match in Shanghai on Sunday May 31 has to be cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak, the AFL needs to consider alternative options.

As it is a St Kilda home game but Marvel and the MCG are already in use that day, I see 2 clear options:

1. Move the game to Monday night at Marvel Stadium. Both teams have a bye the following week anyway. Would depend on agreement from Seven/Fox.

2. Move the game to a Victorian regional venue such as GHMBA Stadium or Mars Stadium. While not the most convenient, Saints fans could still attend.

2 other options which may be less palatable to the Saints:

3. Play the game at Adelaide Oval in a home venue swap with a future fixture.

4. Play at a neutral interstate venue like Canberra, Launceston, Hobart or Cairns.

Thursday night at Marvel (though Port are playing in tassie the week before which isn't ideal for a 5 day break)

Apparently we will all be dead by then anyway so they wont have to do anything #mountainoutofamolehill
I live in Shanghai, and although it’s not often that I agree with a Carlton supporter, in this case you’re spot on with the hashtag. This really feels like a convenient case of media-porn and a chance for the government to flex the ‘population movement control’ muscles and see what kind of control the domestic population can accept.... there’s more to it than our mainstream media friends would have us believe.... anyway, having said all of that, I think that the game may after all be scuttled and need to be played in Victoria. They’ve already cancelled the Shanghai Chinaplas for late April which attracts hundreds of thousands of international and domestic visitors a year so I think the AFL game will follow suit since it’s just one month later....can’t wait for this sh*t situation to be over and the AFL season to start

Tin foil hat stuff there buddy.

The issue and risks are real

Do you really think the Chinese gov would 'flex their muscles' and derail their own economy as well as half the world economy for fake?

Supply chains are now being massively disrupted and will cost world billions not to mention thousands of lives by the time this is over.

Will it be the end of the world? No.

But how far this disruption reaches is only just being realised.

And at the end of the day moving this game means bugger all.

given Port Adelaide effectively purchase the rights for the home game if it is cancelled I wonder if they may hold it at AO?
That's an emphatic no.
St Kilda have flat out refused that option.

I suspect Port will get their money back and St Kilda will take a financial hit by attracting sub 20K at Marvel on a Monday night.

We haven't had a proper home game against Port since 2013, since then we have played them at Adelaide Oval and last year we played them in China.

If the game is played anywhere it should be at Marvel.

Another potential option could be for Port and St Kilda to have the bye the weekend they’re meant to play in a China, and then play at Marvel the following Sunday (only game that day is at the MCG)

Thanks dr harolad
Lol. No it isnt.

My wife's boyfriend is a doctor, I think I know what I'm talking about.

But according to health experts and the CDC, the flu is a far graver health threat in the US than the Wuhan coronavirus. Since October, up to 20,000 Americans have died of the flu.

This new 'virus' has a mortality rate of about 2%, which is low as is, and mortality figures are often exaggerated for new diseases. Not to mention the fact that that figure is blown out by old Chinese people with respiratory problems, living in a country with comparatively poor hygiene standards, and a poor health system.

I will, again, restate my claim that I will support Richmond if any of the players get coronavirus, unless they go around licking doorhandles and toilet seats in Wuhan, they will be fine.

Can you please tell us more about your wife's boyfriend? A far more interesting topic I feel.
