Plan B for China game - moving it to Cairns?

Really struggle to see how that's an enticing proposition for Qld gov to pay $700k for this game to be in Cairns; game would get 5k paying fans at most, still haven't heard of AFL up in North QLD, hardly an enticing game for local casuals either. Seems like AFL is desperate for someone/anyone to stump up the $700K St Kilda are banking on.

So it looks like that the AFL were prepared to sacrifice players welfare for bucks until this offer came along

And you display your ignorance thus of the strength of Australian Football in Cairns and surrounding areas, and the crowds that have attended AFL games.
First - AFL Cairns own outright the multi-million dollar Cazaly Stadium, which is the premier sports stadium in Cairns following a $11 million upgrade completed in 2015.
Second - crowds for AFL games involving the Suns have exceeded 10,000 on 3 occasions (over 11,000 once) with some other games just a few hundred short of the 10k mark. So much for "... still haven't heard of AFL up in North QLD,... "
Third - The North Qld/Cairns area has produced a number of AFL players including -

Yes - the AFL wanted to send the players to Shangai to catch the coronavirus and weren't looking for any alternatives. Clearly..
are you Chinese or are you a historian of the asian descent.. or else are you working the Australian scene in terms of allowing the rough nature of
the high and low of the hysteria... come at me...

If a QLD based team is just scraping past 10K then how many are St Kilda and Port going to attract?

Probably not much different to early years GC. Its not like poeple would have managed to attract a huge attachment to the Suns in their opening years.
But I still don't understand why the game isn't in Melbourne if it is to be moved (which does seem probable). I certainly don't understand why the Qld govt would cough up money for the game.

The article said the saints stand to loss 700k from the canceled match in Shanghai so moving it to Marvel likely on a Monday night isn’t going to help repay their losses. The Caines match could be a likely winfall for them if the Qld government cough up the cash!

That would presumably be $700k compared to the amount they were bribed to play in China, not necessarily a $700k loss on hosting the game at Docklands. Though with the costs associated with that ground, even after the AFL taking it over, the actual loss might approach that.

Crowd discussion aside i down see how it makes financial sense for Qld taxpayers to pay for this game, AFL don't pay tax btw, they can give St Kilda $700K if they want. If the Qld government pay for this after the years long fight to get way less than this for our new training base then it'll be a bit a joke.

To give it some balance, only 3722 turned up to watch Gold Coast Suns play North Melbourne in 2018.

And to give it some context, that particular game was played in cyclonic conditions and was thus an outlier amongst all the other near or above 10k crowds -

IT TOOK some of the heaviest rain at an AFL game in years but the Gold Coast Suns’ Cairns hoodoo has finally been snapped. ... And, to make the 3722 drenched fans in attendance even happier, it was local lad Jack Bowes who kicked the game clinching goal. ...

The heaviest showers of the day hit in the half-hour before the ball was bounced as Cazalys Stadium looked like a puddle for most of the opening term...

Well, St Kilda sold (were forced to sell?) their home game to Port's venue of choice. Port's venue of choice would change. That could be the argument for it being in Adelaide.

That said, Docklands or MCG are surely the only places it could realistically be played if it was to be moved.
The afl are not going to let port have a extra game in Adelaide

The 5 year multi million sponsorship of Port by MG today indicates that it is a worthwhile initiative.
It would be interesting to what personal business deals Koch is making off the back of it.

Not a bad ploy by the QLD government, many families (mine included) are shelving planned winter holidays to South East Asia and will now take their winter break at home in QLD, if this can encourage 10 000 extra tourists to pack out the resorts it will pay the $700k back in a heart beat.
