AUSTRALIA have mapped out a long-term plan to have their best players in action for so-called ''icon series'', while matches that are deemed less important will be used to develop new players.

The formal introduction of different selection guidelines for different opponents and formats, revealed to the Herald by Cricket Australia's team performance chief Pat Howard yesterday, takes the new rotation system to another level, and is sure to provoke debate given Australia last month lost a Test to eighth-ranked New Zealand in what was earmarked as a development series.

''We do look at different series differently and obviously we took the Indian series very much about trying to drive performance, so if a player was touch and go we'd probably push him for this series knowing that if we had to rest him for part of the ODI series, so be it. For New Zealand we took more of a conservative approach, took the chance to get people right,'' Howard said.

What has changed - ODI's have always been used to develop new players? eg, Gilly played ODIs first then stepped into Tests.

Unless they are going with a B-team against say NZ or Bangas, which the article quotes Howard as saying "no", I cant see what will change?

It seems to me to be basically a formalisation of a previously unwritten, but no less real, policy of being conservative with injuries and being more willing to blood youth against weaker teams.

Nothing will change.

FFS. All this "precautionary" and "resting" is rubbish. The players end up missing as much matches through those reasons than they would through injury.

And who do we think we are that we can just rest our big name players against certain sides? How would we feel if we went to India and they gave Sachin, Dravid and Sehwag the month off?

I don't think it's going to be about giving all our players a rest.. Maybe instead of playing someone like Patto in both matches against NZ, they'll play him in one next time knowing he has cemented his spot and is 'saved' for the more important matches.

This is all great and well, to give certain players a rest, but I don't think it'll change the make-up of squads too much...

As long as they don't then just start playing players in the many pointless ODIs... or just ODIs in general... and rest them for test matches.

It's already in place, instead of picking the tried and tested Hilfy against NZ they went with Starc and Pattinson. If we had played India first I suspect Hilfy would have got the nod over Starc.

Personally I'd think "great, win for us in India", and probably laugh at their delusions of thinking there's a gap similar to that between us and Bangladesh.

Not sure about that but from the current status Australia can safely play a B team against us in Australia and still win

Not sure if I agree. These guys need to play cricket and constantly resting them from test cricket may ruin development. I have nothing against them missing the odd ODI.

Dependent on who it is. No issues with the likes if Cummins and Patterson getting rested every once in a while, even your Watsons and Marshs who need to be wrapped in cotton wool makes sense too. But if we end up resting players who are fine under big workloads (i.e - Ponting, Clarke), then I don't think it's the wisest call. In short, rest the youth, and the constantly injured, but the rest not so much.

Dont mind a bit of caution with fast bowlers, especially as alot of them are in that injury prone age group. Should be sorting out our batting lineup and having it pretty set

I think the best players should be saved for test cricket. The problem is that there are too many tests and one dayers a year. The ideal number of tests in a year is 8-12 and the ideal number of one dayers around 15-20. The best players should play some one day cricket but, they could also use one day cricket to help advance young players and try fringe players like Rimmington and McKay.

I despise the idea of resting players from test cricket. They should either be injured/fatigued/dropped.
