Hindsight is a bastard of a thing, but going back to 2009, Talia would have solved a huge structural problem in our team instead of McLean, who is handy but could be largely replaced in a strong team by Curnow, Cachia, Bell or even Ellard at a pinch.

If you're going to be using hindsight, then it would be Talia instead of Lucas, not McLean.

I know we are trying to keep things positive but can't help feel a little disheartened after watching the Blues on Friday night and then watching the Northern Blues again yesterday afternoon.

Some points:

- See very little to 'top-shelf' talent coming through the Northern Blues. Mc Innes we know will be a player, Graham will be a solid citizen and of all the players out their yesterday (aside from Hogan) I though Bell looks the most impressive. Strong, aggressive and a ball winning machine and has some X-factor.

- Buckley shows bursts but at the moment would only do what a Garlett, Betts or Yarran provides.

- Delivery to Mitchell terrible but can see what another poster remarked on a few weeks ago in that he struggles to get off his opponent. A lot of times he is trying to mark on the lead but under a lot of pressure whereas a Fevola would be 5-1 meters in front.

- Still feel Watson might actually do better in the Seniors. Hogan exposed that he is really not big enough for a Key back. Just doesn't have the reach. Up in the Seniors he be going to the 3rd tall and then could be freed up for his kicking which is elite.

I'm not too fussed about giant targets but we need some rock hard mids.

Taggers are great, but we need to move from 2 or three taggers to 1 or two.

I think a Dylan Shiel or two would make us a much much better side and probably cost much much less.

Play Waite as a rebounding defender he was good at it and may improve the backline fragility.
Move heaven and earth for a mobile tall forward,Jesse White comes out of contract this year and would be ideal.Dale Thomas is almost certain to join his old mate and surely the club has value in Warnock/Hampson to secure Frawley or some draft picks.

Jesse White would be perfect for us and we should accommodate for him by moving Waite into the backline?

Kill me now.

Jesse White is hopeless. How some people continue to bring his name up as a possible target is beyond me. He would be of absolutely no value to us.

25% of the team that played against the Swans will not be around in the future, Mick said as much to a coterie group in Sydney. That's probably five players - I'm thinking White, McLean, Robinson, Scotland and Curnow... Eddie Betts was also a Ratts boy.

Eddie has had a shite season by his standards, no doubt, but the jaw and suspension haven't helped him...

As for Mitch, MM ain't stupid, and he knows our 'toughness' would drop about a gazillion percent if you took him out of the team. Robbo will be in Navy Blue for a while yet.

A tough call but you're probably right RK. We do seem to be clogging up some positions with similar size/type players. I wonder if MM would consider trading one of Betts, Garlett or Yarran and if so which one?

He need to find a role for Yaz, he and walker of the hb would be awesome.

Why can't we be open minded about trading our first round pick?
Having that first round selection doesn't necesarily translate into success, and we could potentially address a need.

As long as it's not wasted like it was on the Mclean trade.

This x 1000.

I know we probably make him look good, but in general he is an absolute spud.

Gee I hope not!

No.

Yes.

We all miss Setanta but Jesse White just isn't the same thing.

Gotta offload one of these big spuds and try for another speculative ruck late in the draft, god knows we have better results with the speculatives than the rucks that come to the club with all the bells and whistles. Plus an extra 300k in cap might help with the above.

Talia isn't even the best talent taken after Mclean and Lucas. Fyfe by a mile over what was left.

Why does trading translate into success?

We could potentially have another Mclean, Laidler or Warnock type situation if they have injuries and then struggle with form.

Frawley is contracted, so you can forget about trading for him.

You could make the exact same argument in first round draft picks.
Not wanting to have a crack at our recruiters, but have a look at our last 4 first round draft selections.

Kane Lucas - Coming off an injury riddled 2012, and still trying to find his way at senior level. If we are at full strength he'd be borderline in our best 22.

Matthew Watson - Developing KPD who had 5 goals kicked on him yesterday by Jesse Hogan and IMO is still a fair way away from playing senior footy.

Josh Bootsma - Massive talent, great spoiler and penetrating kick. Has shown something and think he will play more footy next year after another big preseason

Troy Menzel - First year player, huge talent.

I'm not advocating trading our first round pick for anyone, but if we can get someone that will have an immediate impact and fill a pressing need then we should be open to it.

Average season @ best.

Unable to finish off teams when on top (Collingwood, Essendon & Hawthorn). Also unable to run over the top of teams when we are dominating possession (Richmond & St Kilda). Appears they do not have the mental toughness to win consistently.

Huge issues with our drafting Russell & Bower (no longer @ club), Hampson & Lucas. All are a waste of high picks. Its causing big issues now with our lack of quality.

Russell played over 100 games for the Carlton Football Club. Have a look at that draft and you'll find we did quite well under the circumstances. Cupboard is pretty bare when it comes to quality players from that draft, particularly selected after JR. Wouldn't say that is a wasted pick at all.

Also don't understand how one could come to the conclusion that Lucas is a wasted selection. Has suffered from injuries throughout his time at the club and now, at 21 years of age in his 4th year at the club, is cementing a spot in the senior side. Far too harsh and reactionary to call him a waste of a pick.

Think we could see a real clean out at years end, which would really enhance our chances of getting 1, maybe 2 quality players during the trade and FA periods. Depending on who has contracts for 2014, I think we could see up to 10 changes to our list.

I'm almost at a point where I'd be excited by a Crazy Mick's Crazy Bargains Discount Sale, because for every player we have who takes a step forwards in the last five years, another takes one back. Gutted that at least one, preferably two of Mitchell, Watson and McCarthy hasn't come on, and that's what has been the difference right now. Henderson could be nearly as good as Bradshaw if we could release him into a true swingman's role.

No dale Thomas for me... There aren't many players we can target but I still think Jack Watts is who we should seriously try for! I'd give melbourne our second round pick + player or two for him (Ellard, Watson, Joseph.. Etc)... He's young and we can hopefully de-Melbourne him enough. Plus with Hogan, Clarke, Dawes in their forward line in 2014 if we get into watts ear enough he's more of a lock to be in our forward line than melbournes.

If not if GWS get Franklin, I'd investigate getting Jeremy Cameron... I'd give them our first round draft pick + 1 of Yarran/Garlett + 1 of Ellard/Joseph/Watson/Hampson/warnock for him. Cameron would be worth every cent...and a trade like that would be fair... If they take Yarran and Watson from those options that's 3 number 1 picks they get.

We need to be aggressive this trade period, 1 kpp required at least and a mid...

Totally agree with your intent there, we need to be aggressive this year. Somehow I don't think we'd be able to get Cameron across, although he's exactly what we need. I'd definitely look at Watts, I think a coach like MM could bring the best out in him. Come on Carlton, please DO SOMETHING! I'm sick of being a middle of the road team!!

Yes Cameron is a long shot but worth a try only if they get franklin... Their cap with franklin on. 4-5 year multi-million dollar deal would be close to bursting point in a few years with all their talent... I highly doubt they'd get franklin as it doesn't make much sense to me as their forward line in a few years with what they have at present will be the best in the league.. But if they do get franklin, we would be stupid not to enquiry about Cameron or some of their other players..
