A traditional forward setup has always looked like a big CHF, big FF and a 3rd tall that's a resting ruck in the FP.

Westhoff doesn't fit the mould of any of those old school positions, and in reality the 3rd tall resting ruck is something thats disappeared with the modern game due to the speed and pressure required.

So Westhoff is a perfect 3rd tall foil in the modern game, and 100% should be our 3rd tall. That role isn't the stay at home forward though, it's the high half forward role that gets up onto the wing, even slides into the backline like a wingman, but also swings forward when the chance is there.

That's Westys best spot IMO. A 3rd tall forward, just not the traditional type, a more modern 3rd tall forward that is a high half forward.

What I feel kills us at the moment is that neither Ryder or Marshall are the big CHF or FF types either, so we have no one really leading the forward line and we have 3 forwards all trying to compensate for the lack of impact the others are having, and it's creating a downward spiral of output. I mean last night there was way too many times where Ryder and Marshall were all going up in the same contest, while Westy felt like the only guy that was presenting and creating space on his own up forward.

Moore smashed us last week and learnt nothing, Keath won the medal with the help of the selection panel.
After some Tigers bloke took a world record intercept marks previously. It is almost like we are still building the evidence to confirm where one of our major Mcgoverns... err problems is.

We could always play Westhoff on the wing where he won the B&F last year.

Actually no, that's a bad idea.
Yeah this thread is absolutely maddening.

Westhoff isn't a key forward and has never been consistently effective there. Others have said that he's been screwing our structure for Hinkley's entire tenure, and that's exactly correct.

Lock him into any position and he's bad at it. He's a below average key forward. He's a terrible ruck. He's brilliant when allowed to roam and exploit mismatches with his height, running and reading of the play.

Summary of this post: "Marshall can't play as the #1 forward, only as the #2. So let's bring in somebody to play as the #1 forward which would allow Marshall to play as the #2, and then immediately drop him".

The current set up absolutely isn't working. But Frampton should be playing alongside Marshall, not instead of. If Marshall continues to stink it up in a proper forward structure, then that's different.
Thanks for saving me the time.

Don’t forget Josh “16 marks, 11 of those intercepts” Walker in Round 3.

Ryder can play forward. He is one of our better contested marks. Or was . Anyway, his biggest problem is not applying forward line pressure.

So many intercept marking defenders have days out against us it is hard to keep up. Adelaide could have rolled out the bones of Peter Caven for the showdown medal.

I was thinking about how our tall forwards don't take any marks and completely forget that we make every tall defender look AA quality. That's a good point.

He's taken 10 marks inside 50 in 8 games.

He's taken 1 mark inside 50 and kicked 2 goals in the last 3 weeks.

He's been okay as a second ruck which is good because as a key forward he's been garbage.

Should have kept Butcher on the list.

Ryder playing forward yields one good game every 5-6. Same as Westhoff. Marshall has a worse strike rate than that at present.

Those sorts of returns are simply not good enough.

Even if Frampton wasn't in such good form, our coaches should have picked him by now to just try something different, because the forward set-up we've used all year just hasn't cut it.

How will we ever know if Frampton is actually any good at AFL level if we don't give him a try. By the time Hinkley offers him a game, it will either be one week before Dixon's return or round 23 in a season that is already over. It's pathetic, irresponsible coaching.

As has been posted numerous times before, contrast this to the numerous WASTED opportunities afforded by Hinkley to scrappy, ineffective small players who quite simply were never, ever going to amount to anything at AFL level: Neade, Johnson being prime examples.

And another thing. Anyone who thinks that Ladhams wouldn't offer at least as much as Ryder right now, has no idea about football.

Just play Billy ... he can lead .. he can mark .. he can goal .. What more does bloody Hinkley want ...
Oh .. just play soft as .. Motlop and AJ ... they will get it done ... In ya bloody dreams.

He is the exact kind of player we need. Some aggression and physicality by a big unit who can get under peoples skin. Honestly feel he must have really wronged someone high up at the club or is just not showing professionalism because I just can't fathom how he hasn't been given an opprtunity otherwise. We've seen it from the team that beat us this weekend not being afraid to drop Jenkins and Gibbs, two high profile names and it's turned their season around. We've seen soft efforts from a number of players this year and we do not make them earn their spots. Trengove and Frampton are showing form now that demands they get picked and it's time we started acting like a club that rewards effort. We are trying to get by on talent and not effort, the selection of Johnson this week for what can only be explained as for physical attribute reasons (and by the looks of him on Saturday that's an even scarier prospect) for example was demoralising and flat out stubborn.
It's time to start picking names on performance, not expectation. Frampton has earned his go and we have underperforming players in the first team. Time to make the change.

Hinkley will wait until its well and truley year over before he realises he got it wrong (or admits it) and picks Frampton. Its know he is arrogant and doesn't listen to his assistants. Thinks every idea he has is gold and unable to recognise that it doesn't work and just keeps doing the same thing so he can say "i told yous i was right"
