If that was true, why did they not offer him a contract?Lynch: the FA compensation was better than anything they could have got by trade.
May: they received a fair trade for Melbourne. In hindsight it seems like overs.
Ah Chee: they received a fair deal for a player they didn't really want anymore.
Lyons: they shed the salary of a player they didn't really want anymore.
Martin is a player they still want and he isn't an FA yet. They were, and still are, perfectly entitled to dig their heels in until he either hits FA or they get a suitable offer.
It was reported that we were still willing to engage in a pick 15+Martin for pick 9 exchange on the last day of the trade period. So Carlton certainly had an opportunity to complete the deal and chose not to. Don't act like Carlton had no other choice in this situation because it's simply not true.
See Above GFY. Botha Cripps and Docherty training today. What was Martin doing?
Martin has done nothing and was dropped from the wooden spooners, you seriously think he is worth anything of value? You seriously think a 2nd and 3rd in a year's time in a heavily compromised draft is overs? Seriously? To me that's a long way from overs.
Imagine being this stupidOnly a Carlton supporter would think paying $1 Million for a player worth $400K is getting him for FREE.
Thanks for the laugh!
He wasn't dropped due to a lack of talent, so yes I seriously think he is worth something of value. As does your club, or do they routinely flush $3.5 million down the toilet?Martin has done nothing and was dropped from the wooden spooners, you seriously think he is worth anything of value?
Everyone predicts how it will go. Why do you think clubs like Port Adelaide routinely move picks from one draft to another? They make decisions based on what they see, you can call it foolish if you like, I call it pragmatic. The heavily compromised statement is a load of s**t, half or more of the kids won't go top 30 or even be drafted, the pecking order changes so much in 12 months predicting how it will go now is foolish at best.
This is a bizarre and stupid situation by both clubs.
First, on Carlton’s side, agonising over what he’s worth is stupid. You get a decent player just entering his prime, convince him that your (bottom 3) team is the place he wants to be... then quibble over the price? Sure, we were holding out for Papley and keeping some assets in reserve but it’s just poor form. Get the deal done, bring the guy in and get him settled and focusing on preseason and playing good footy in a new environment. Instead, we are stuck in some stupid game of emotional blackmail, hoping GC don’t exercise their right to redraft him (which would be perfectly legit of them) AND that Melbourne for some reason choose not to draft a bloke who would totally fit their needs. Absolute idiocy.
On GC side, geez. They had years to sort out his contract and an extension beyond this year. They didn’t. Too bad - you’ve had 7 years with the bloke, he’s given solid service at a basket case of a club, and now wants something different. You’ve traded out other guys in his age bracket who wanted to go, and this is the stand you are making, over 10 or so spots of draft position when you are loaded with (freebie) draft assets gifted to you by the league? This is your stand? To what end? Keep Martin for 1 miserable year until free agency and then he can go anyone? Try again to persuade him to stay (8th time is a charm, right?)? If it’s a question of price, again, figure out something you want and get it sorted rather than having this mess that the whole playing group is absolutely watching... Absolute idiocy.
There’s a reason why both teams are in the bottom 3 IMO. Richmond gave up pick 6 for Prestia, traded a second round pick for Caddy; even packaged up two picks to get a first rounder for Chris Yarran, a trade that didn’t pan out. In the end - they got good players into their footy club and have won premierships. Does anyone see Hawthorn or Geelong ballsing this up from either direction? Hawthorn let Buddy Franklin go for pick 19 when he wanted out, traded a heap to get Jaeger O’Meara. Their ‘rebuild’ included a top 4 home and away season last year. The AFL should have stepped in on this one and forced a mediation (and still should rather than letting the dick-swinging contest turn the draft into a shambles).

Worth anything of value? Isn't your club offering him more than $750,000 a year?
Does 3 million over 5 years = 750k per year?
Exactly...it's not 750k.3.1M, with room to get to 3.5M, and heavily front loaded (2M in the first 2 years).
No, it's not 750K/yr, but it's enough to suggest your club thinks he's worth a fair bit.
Exactly...it's not 750k.
2M in the first 2 years
Lol...I’m deflecting now...hahaYeah, but the point was that the money your club is throwing at him shows they think he's valuable.
Stop trying to deflect from that.

Whatever...I was just trying to highlight to someone they had their facts wrong.avoiding the point of a comment to focus on a detail that was wrong...Classic deflection.
Look Gold Coast re-sign all their young guns and Carlton get Martin for free in the PSD.
Both clubs come away happy in this scenario.
Well done to Lukosius, quality young man who did the right thing by Gold Coast and Carlton
He won't sign, he delisted himself remember. The only way he signs is if they draft him again, which i doubt, but anyway i'll see you in this thread next Friday. They might as well sign Jack too?
