Aha, what do you make them out of? Tazos used to be good for that, i just buy the Dunlop 1mm ones now, they're perfect!

Just old plastic cards I clean out of my wallet and occasionally from old CD's. Basically any hard plastic I can get my hands on. I've experimented with making them out of wood and metal, didn't work out too well:o

Clarence?

Last few days I have pulled out my guitar and just played random chords. My tuner is broken so the guitar is terribly out of tune, don't actually know how to play any songs, know a few chords but that's about it. Wish I knew how to play though.

As long as you just want to play by yourself, you can tune the guitar to itself. Whatever the E string is, go to the 5th fret and tune your A string to that note. Same with A to D and D to G. On the G String (now now settle) play the 4th fret for the B string and then the 5th fret for your high E string.

I hope that makes sense.

If you wanna play guitar and your not up to speed with theory, chords and stuff, trying open G tuning. Basically you put your finger over one bar and its a major chord.

Keith Richards wrote most of the Rolling Stones songs with this tuning. John Butler and most slide players do the same thing. You sound better than you really are basically (not taking anything away from Keef and JB)

Check it out on youtube/google.

Played the saxaphone in high school - mostly in concert bands and big bands, the odd smaller jazz ensemble. Did my sixth grade exam, then pretty much stopped playing seriously which is one of my big regrets. Haven't picked it up in years... I'm sure I'm absolutely rubbish now. Will get back into it one day.

Played the bagpipes for 5 years at school. Am one of those rare people who love that instrument

I thought everybody loved the bagpipes?

Would be a bit ordinary to listen to someone learning though, got to admit.

Not as bad as you think. You spend about 6 months just training your lungs up to the point of being able to play continuously. Lung power required to play it is huge.

Thus, by the time you're actually playing the pipes properly (and thus to full volume) your ability to play music should be fine.

Don't know how it is taught elsewhere, but we always learnt new songs on the chanter (wooden recorder-like instrument, basically just the mouthpiece and finger holes) before playing it on the pipes.

Yeah that's not bad really, and if you get yourself a slide you can sound pretty cool too, I think Jack White probably does similar stuff too. If you want some wicked slide stuff check out Duane Allman, **** me, just unbelievable slide stuff!

I prefer to just know the power chord shape and the muted E string, that pretty much sorts me out! *chug chug chugga chug dun chug chug dun chug chug chug chug*

Millions of band have made careers doing this, so nothing wrong with that

(Eg: Blink 182, Nickelback, Greenday...post punk bands.)

Noticed in another thread on prized possessions, a lot of people nominated a guitar or another instrument as something they would save in a fire etc... got me thinking... how many of you play an instrument, and if you play re you any good?

good thread, there have been a few similar on the music forum but none have ever seemed to kick on.

anyway, I play guitar and write songs, my songwriting is a fair bit stronger than my guitar playing though, which is just a tool to help me write stuff.

was playing gigs in my band around Melbourne up until my girlfriend gave me a daughter last year; I havent played a gig since, too much rehearsing/lining up gigs/drumming up support.

we had a reasonably big year in 2010 though, played quite a few gigs, the highlights being our EP launch at Revellers/Laundry and also supporting Regurgitator at Ferntree Gully Hotel of all places - most gigs we got around the Fitzroy area though.

despite my virtual retirement from gigging, I am really fortunate in that my best mate is a super talented engineer/producer (and a shit hot guitarist) who has his own studio.

he and I have been working on an album at the studio in our spare time for over a year now, it is soooo much fun.

here is his studio, check it out cuz it's awesome :

if anyone is every interested in doing some recording let me know and I could broker a reasonable deal from him ..

I'm sure you dont need my advice, but : make sure you bring your own guitar !

I've only ever done one solo gig and it was pretty disasterous to be honest; borrowed someones accoustic guitar before the gig and the action was so high I could barely muscle the strings onto the neck - pretty much did the gig a cappella (the poor audience !)

yeah my mate's studio is pretty cool huh, so much awesome vintage equipment.

I havent really missed the gigs all that much, maybe every couple of months I will get the urge, but I find that outlet has been replaced by the hours I've spent in the studio, so it hasnt been a huge wrench.

good luck tonight, I'm sure you'll nail it :thumbsu:

Not really lol. It is completely out of tune. How will tuning the A string to E work if it's out of tune

Sorry haha

Played guitar on and off since I was 8 (now 27) and not nearly as good as I could be. I work 60 hours a week and it simply is a case of never finding time to sit around playing it.

I bought a Maton last year in an attempt to get back into it, but I sold it a month or two ago because it simply wasn't being used.

I miss it, but meh... time is a killer.

Cabling all done now...

I think he meant that the E string and the A string on the 5th fret should sound the same. And so on and so forth.

What Poseidon said. The 5th fret on the E string is A. The 5th fret on the A string is D. So even if the original note on the E string is not quite E, you can still tune the guitar to itself.

Yeah this, it won't matter if you're 1/2 step out or whatever, it's more important to have the guitar strings in tune relative to each other than to A440 concert pitch or whatever the **** it is.

Played euphonium/tuba for about 10 years all through school and absolutely loved it and got to a pretty high level. Played in a very good quality orchestra, wind bands and quintets (our school was lucky enough to have a brilliant music program) and some of the opportunities I had were just incredible. Highlight was getting to play the entire Carmina Burana with a 100 piece orchestra and 300 piece choir at the Sydney Town Hall in front of about 1000 people. At the age of 14. I wish sometimes I could have done it at the age of 18 just so I could have played my part better, but still, unbelievably lucky.

Haven't played in about 3 years and keep going through stages of umming and ahhing about whether to take it up again. I go through periods where I'm desperate to start up again and then periods of not being all too desperate.

Having the skill of playing music is one of the greatest things to have in this world in my eyes and it's times like these when I reminisce that I get really antsy to play again...
