Season is essentially over. Why bother making finals when we rely on beating Melbourne, St.Kilda, GWS (Can't even lock them in) to get us there?

Season is shot to hell, so why not just play the kid we have and stop gifting spuds a game?

Thoughts?

Good or bad idea?

It won't happen, but this is what I'd seriously consider if I had a voice on the matter.

We don't have many kids left. Most of them are mid 20's now. They've rotted away at VFL everyone forgot about them so long. They will retire soon. :p

Really keen for Elton, Batchelor to play. Think all 3 are at the maturity level now to play AFL and at least we will know if they are up to it. Elton is a huge talent and feel he is a bit like Griff and needs to get a game in the 1s to see what he can do. Batchelor must come in for Newman as he is an upgrade on Newy and has always shown he can play.

Outside of that wouldn't mind seeing Lennon, McIntosh at the top level to see how they go. McIntosh has not inspired a lot through his VFL form but it might just be the spike he needs.

Pardon the intrusion but given the way the season is unfolding at this stage 12 wins will get you into the finals. Even if you lose to the cats this weekend and are 2-5 the games following the bye are very winnable. If you do make the finals you will have won a large amount of games in the back half of the season meaning you are in form. Despite your injuries, correct me if I'm wrong, your side is fairly similar to the side that won 15 games last year. I predicted given your form last year and relatively easy draw you wold finish top 4 this year. I think you rely to heavily on a small number of players but things can change very quickly there is no reason why you can't be 5-5 coming into the north game with every chance of making finals.

Nothing will happen while Hardwick and Gale still think finals are possible.

I would like to see the kids play. PLEASE Richmond give Arnott every game

Playing the kids is the only way we could make the finals anyway.
Batchelor and Lennon moving the ball out of defence with skill and composure is much better than Petterd and Morris turning it over or slowing down play in defence. Releasing Vlastuin into the middle adding more midfield strength and adding an extra tall up forward. Quicker movement and more forward entries will benefit 3 talls. We are not playing the 22 who can win us enough games. Wake up Dimma lol

I'm ****ing sick of hearing this after every game. Over the last few weeks we've already brought in inexperienced players: Arnott, McDonough, Gordon and Lloyd.

McIntosh, Helbig and Elton are struggling to string 2 decent games together in the VFL, yet we still have people crying for them to be brought in saying things like:

Reward form..... drop players out of form. Its worked for 100 years.

When the kids in the VFL aren't performing you can't reward them with promotion. The only other kid that's close to promotion is Lennon, and he'll come in soon enough.

Batchelor can't hit a target either.

Exactly ... If there is no firm in the twos they don't get picked... But reward form.

Petterd gets a game from no form in the reserves. Doesn't even play reserves. He just goes straight in after injury. Batchelor is better than him and rarely gets a game. He is much better for our team and need to play all year to get his confidence up to the required level. Let him do mistakes and keep him in and let him learn and improve

Yeah he can. Needs more game time too. PLAY HIM
he plays every week.

id like to see kids play but only when they are ready. after they're playing consistent footy in the VFL. no gifts!

Also it is clear we dont have enough mature players on the field at times when we really need a push, adding in too many young players that may not have a 'voice', or go into their shells will only compound this. This is why i think players like newy will continue to get a kick as long as possible and king will always have a place when fit.

But do we want to rely on beating teams like Brisbane, Melbourne, St.Kilda to get us there?
We were meant to be competing against every team in the league. Yet, floggings against Hawthorn, C'Wood, Geelong are showing just how off the pace we are. 6 players in our best 22 wouldn't get a game anywhere else and won't be around for a tilt at being at least a competitive team. Why bother playing them now?

What happens when you have players in the best 22 continuing to spud it up, week in and out. Players over the age of 25+.

I'd rather see kids **** up then these 'senior players'

I used to be of the mindset 'play the kids, get the best draft pick etc' but I've changed to the 'play every game with the intent to win' camp. IMO, if we are happy to go into games expecting to lose, then we are going back to the old Richmond. If the players don't go out expecting to win, why should the club expect supporters and fans to keep putting money into the club?

On the issue of finals, it doesn't matter who we beat as long as we get there in the end. Cast your mind back to the EF last year and look at the vast difference in finals footy experience between Carlton and Richmond. Heck, even just betweem Dimma and Malthouse. Finals is where the real stuff happens and if we ever want to win another flag, you need to win finals. The only way to win finals is to get used to playing in such high pressure, high stakes games. Look at the strongest teams - the Cats, Hawks, Swans, Freo and Pies. All of those clubs have regularly contested finals in the last 5-8 years. They are battle hardened and more seasoned than our own list.

IMO, we need to get as many finals games experience into our list as possible. Play the kids if their form warrants it and drop under performing players as well but the expectation should still be that the team that steps on the field is a team focused on getting the win and getting us closer to making finals. I won't give up on the season until we mathematically can't make the 8 and the minimum we should expect of the players and coaches is that they keep trying as well.

Good post - we have a fairly easy run after the bye and can definitely get some wins and confidence back in the players. We should have some important players back ready to go which will help push out a few of the under performing players from the side.

Too much doom and gloom on these boards. The season is very much alive!
