Edwards was one of Richmond’s worst players across the 3 x eliminations losses across 2013-2015 - genuinely crumbled under the pressure and didn’t stand up at all. He was one of our best players across ALL finals from 2017-2020, including Norm Smith votes in 2017 and 2020.

Says a lot about the character of the man.

Anyone not sure of how he should be regarded … watch these 3 x games : the 2017 GF, the 2019 QF against Brisbane and the 2020 GF.

Watch closely and have the slow-mo button at the ready. A genuine jet who made everyone around him a better player.

Not sure if it's worth a thread, but Edwards got me thinking - who is the worst player to play 300 games? Obviously a player has to be reasonably good to play 300, but it's more about being at least average for a very long time.

Shane Edwards is probably the worst of in the last few decades. I don't know anything about Garry Foulds, so he must be right up there.

You’d probably start with those who played long enough to reach 300 games, but weren’t good enough to help their team win a flag .. let alone 3. Like Neitz and Nathan Jones for example.

Wow - not sure if I will recover from that.

Neitz was always severely overrated. Very good club player, not a champion of the game. He would be at the bottom group of 300 game players, but comfortably ahead of Edwards.

Nathan Jones in another side would be at least a 3 time All Australian, was tagged every week and never played a bad game.

As if anyone bothered tagging Nathan Jones … bahahahaa … when you’re thumping a Nathan Jones inspired team by 10-goals which happened almost every week he played for that club, I don’t think you’re tagging anyone.

I’d be confident in saying Jones was never tagged in his entire career. He was hardly creative or damaging …. hahaha.

Lol let’s start with Nathan Jones. Never made an AA team, won flags or polled Normie votes in multiple GFs like Shedda

I know literally nothing about this bloke and I've watched plenty of Richmond over the last 6 years.
A ball flies out of a stoppage from a lightning handball to a free player, starting a scoring chain. The commentators don't see or mention who did that handball. If you're a Richmond supporter, watching a replay, you'll pause and go back (maybe several times) to find out. Neutral supporters, who would of course almost always be watching live and be less concerned about such things, wouldn't be bothered. Nine times out of ten that player was Shane Edwards. This, far more than the usual bias, explains why Tigers supporters have always rated him better than other supporters (and also why the occasional bone-headed Tiger supporters haven't). Lets forget about Blaizee's notorious thread about him being better than Cyril (and to any Hawthorn supporters I can accept that Cyril was better, easy to do when we have Peggy and Benny running the show rather than boof-head Jeff and, as a consequence, now have two Rioli's to your none). I hate comparing players anyway. But to all those who have posted rubbish about him being the "worst 300 game player ever" or a "good ordinary plater" you have nfi.

Amazing player with an uncanny ability to do the right thing at the right time. Great bloke, always providing insight and intelligent commentary on the nights happenings in post-game interviews. Underrated contributor to the three flags he has played in and despite starting poorly this year, certainly isn't limping to the line.

In our premiership years, I thought he was our most important centre square and clearance player - moreso than Prestia, Cotchin and even Dusty

Good player.

SEN talked about who would make the hall of fame out of Gray or Edwards.

I assume if Edwards didn't play 300 games he never would have been considered.

People just don't watch games they are watching.

Kudos to osho for making a thread praising an opposition player. Its just unfortunate that Richmond is hated so much that people can't even show a 300 game, all Australian, triple flag winner player any respect simply because of the jumper he wears.
I really liked watching Edwards play. He was one player who occassionally used to help oppo off the floor. He's left an impression.

Captained the club 7 times for 6 wins in 2019 including a backs to the walls victory against Port in R4 when we were missing Jack, Cotch, Rance and Dusty to injury to get our season back on track after losing Rance in R1. As we know 2019 was a good year for the Tiges and Shane was our Captain for nearly a third of the season and led us to 37.5% of our H&A wins.

In addition has made significant contributions to the indigenous culture at Richmond.

In total his contribution to his club across onfield and off-field has been enormous.

Loved and revered by Tiger fans.

Shed a great player, no doubt about that.

Why would you think he would be a good recruiter??

I think it’s more he or the club has said that is the path he wants to pursue post playing. I’m also pretty sure he was at the last draft nights.

There’s 98 blokes in the 300 club and Dangerfield makes 99 this weekend so I imagine there’d be quite a few worse players than Shane Edwards.

You’re way off. I reckon he’s far closer to worst Indigenous 300 gamer. Goodes, Burgoyne, Franklin, Betts, McLeod, Wanganeen and O’Loughlin.

I’d have loved him at Geelong though

There are no poor players who get anywhere near 300 AFL games. A lot of 300+ game players have of course been amongst the absolute elite players of their generation, Coventry, Reynolds, Matthews, Bartlett, R Harvey, Quinlan, Roos, Ablett Jnr, Doull, Dyer, Whitten, Pendlebury, Franklin and quite a few others.

But there is a large group Edwards would fit into, who were never marquee level players but just very very good footballers, who would have spent many many seasons in the top 10 players in their team. Guys like Mick Martyn, Don Scott, Shannon Grant, Garry Foulds, Kelvin Moore, Luke Power, Russell Greene, James Kelly, Ashcroft, Lewis, Blakey, Hurn, Breen, there are loads of them. Edwards I think sits very comfortably amongst this group.

All players have their weaknesses but you won’t ever find any duds in this cohort.

Correct
It's actually a little unbecoming trying to tear long term servants down
