For mine I would rather just get a depth ruck in the rookie draft, get a mature VFL/SANFL/WAFL ruck. Not sure I would spend a mid range pick this year on a ruck when there is a severe drop between the top ruck (Lobb) and the rest. There are a few rucks next year that could be picked up. Heavyside is a high possesion player who can kick a goal, we could do worse at 55.

Spot on. No point taking a ruck at 55 when they will only be about 5 to 7 live selections after this point. It's more than likely the player will slip to the Rookie Draft.

Marsh - From the highlights package he appears to be like Rhys Stanley - Athlete rather than footballer.

Also and I hate to be blunt- this is a weak draft. Spin it whichever way you want but it is true. There is a HUGE drop between Lobb and the other rucks. We would be better getting an Orren Stevenson-type, in other words a VFL ruck who can provide cover, nothing more. We are spending a pick on what would be a 3rd stringer. That is what you use the rookie draft for.

Disagree, looks like a Stevie J type. It is the forward/mid we are severely lacking going forward.

the comparison i had from memory was Gary Rohan without the footy brain, so similar tracks.

A stack to work with, and we could really mold him how we see fit, be it midfield, wing, hb, small/tall forward. Wouldn't be that disappointed with Marsh.

*depending on who we pass of course, I have my favourites

I am agreeing with your proposal - Ruck in the rookie draft.o_O

But is he more athlete than footballer - This is the key question ?

Taller Gary Rohan, but yes that comparison is probably not far away, he just seems a guy with all the tricks in the box. We can afford to punt! He could seriously be one of the better players if moulded correctly!

Does it matter? For the record I think he is more of a footballer although his athletic traits are good. If anything that means his fitness levels will be good!

Yep, there has to be a couple. I haven't really looked at ruckmen this year so I would only be guessing.

you'd have to say so at the moment, not that that's necessarily a bad thing. If he's a willing learner and has a good work ethic that basically becomes irrelevant

Wouldn't mind us looking to rookie draft Aaron Cornelius purely as backup to our forwardline. Has kicked a couple of bags in the AFL could do a lot worse - surprised to see him delisted.

Or Liam Jurrah as something potentially really different as a 3rd tall forward potentially - long shot and I know people will jump all over me saying something like that.

He is ****ing useless, that's why he was delisted

Not a fan of the "mould the athlete into a footballer" mentality. Let's take footballers who have a bit of athletic ability thanks, they have a better chance of being able to play football at a decent level.

On 5AA last night they were saying that Adelaide will take Crouch with pick 23 if available, he is definitely their first preference. They'd also take Dunstan or Dumont if they slide. Therefore if one of those 3 is available at 23 they won't be sliding to 26. They also mused a bit about Apeness if available at 23 but they seemed to think he won't be available then, hence the midfield options being the preference. If Apeness is available it could pose a problem for them.

Take from that what you will, sounds like typical pre-draft hyperbole. "blah blah definitely. blah blah next preference. blah blah if. blah blah could change thoughts hence definitely really meant maybe. blah blah"

The only reason I put it up there is a club 3 picks ahead of us definitely have 3 of the names most prominent around here (except Garlett) firmly in their sites which you'd think means other clubs in the 20 - 25 range do also. We're praying for a slider, hence I think the club mentioning Lang as there is a far greater reality of him being available at 26.

Stevie J has a brilliant footy brain. Reading Quigleys write up on Marsh he doesn't time leads well, footy brain is in question and that ain't easy to pick up. I remember when Freo recruited Trent Croad, he was a guy who could jump buildings, a great kick and superb all round athlete, however his footy brain wasn't great. Use to watch him at Subi when he was drafted to Freo and initially we thought he was the second coming of Gary Ablett BUT he would get lost, run to the wrong spots and didn't time his leads. At the same time a young Medhurst came on the scene and he just knew where to run and what to do. Hawthorn were smart putting Croad at a run with FB role where he could use his awesome power to negate key forwards and just settled him in that position. So don't bank on Marsh growing a footy brain as I think often these things are instinctive. Also he kicked 20.39 this yr. But agree we are and have severely lacked a good quick forward. Anyone know if there are any quick small forwards with tricks in the senior leagues around the country who could slot in?

You think we can find someone better in the draft thats just as ready to go at 55? or even 26? Hes 23 turning 24. I dont think hes any good but hes probably not far off being one of the better ready to go key position forwards that isnt in the AFL.

I mean Derickz is ******* useless aswell but Sydney rightfully so targeted him as an option.

Whats not to say Hurley plays his normal half year and one of JoeD, TBC, Ryder gets injured we are either severely limited down back or up forward with talls. So a player from this draft with the picks we have wont likely be adequate backup whereas a 24 year old with at least 6 preseasons behind him might be better than nothing.

Jay Kennedy Harris would be the one but we would be paying 26 for him, won't get past North's pick 30.

Disagree on Marsh but maybe that is just me, I think he has the footy smarts. Needs to work on his conversion rate but he generally is a beautiful kick.

Don't beautiful kicks have a good conversion rate?

Not all the time, I said he needs to work on his conversion rate between the sticks. That said kicking efficiency can be improved, look at Jobe!
