Honestly there are better KPF's next year, who will be more ready so to speak. I sort of understand where they are coming from this year. Boyd aside there is very few AFL ready KPF's, and very few that will make it (true KPF's). I wouldn't be spending a first rounder on a KPF just because they are a KPF unless it was Boyd.
But Carlton are in desperate need of a KPF. The literally have NONE:

A safe prediction for 55 - It will be a player whose name hasn't been mentioned on these boards 1
Nick O'Brien anyone? Dylan Van Unen? Cale Hooker?

But seriously, those were drafts with several picks before them; this time there is more pressure to make the correct pick.

If we take Marsh at #26 ill cry. Yer he is fast. He is not worth 26! Templeton should be our guy. Him or Dumont. Then address our needs of a tall at #55 besides from Boyd and McCartney, it is a lucky dip for talls after that.

Our needs are twofold: KPF and ruck.

Mate, they would be picking for needs, like you have been suggesting with Marsh. The DESPERATELY NEED a KPF. Plain and simple. McCarthy ain't bad, so they should snare him.

They also have a need to replace Judd as an inside mid. Don't see why they would take the best available and that means not taking McCarthy. Our lust is in a better shape, we can draft purely on a needs basis with Marsh

No they wanna strike while Judd is still playing. If they didn't I wouldn't call it a pointless investment seeing as he brought them to relevancy again but it wouldn't end in what they wanted it too. They have also already got Nick Graham and probably some others to play similar to Judd's role.

They simply can't hold out any longer, they have to draft a KPF. They should have 3-4 years ago.

Disagree. I actually think they have realised that their best chance might be just post Judd. The do have some
KPP, and you need to get the right one but you can't be just drafting them every year just because they fill a need they must be equal to the mid. I have always said all KPP's bar Boyd are not worth it till the late 1st round this year. There is a significant drop in quality!

Im not too fazed if we take a Ruck at pick 26 if best available.

We did pick up Aylett, Edwards, Chapman in trade period, they all can play midfield roles...

I'd prefer we pick up Lobb over Apeness.

People Templeton is incredibly over-hyped and is playing in a league that is 3 or 4 rungs below VFL. He is not that good and I would lose my shit if we took him at 26.

I wouldn't be looking at him at all. Everyone see's the hair and thinks 'ooooohh my god, he has hair like Dyson Heppell, he must be good!" When in fact he is quite ordinary.

Would prefer if we used Pick 26 on a mid and used 55 or our rookie picks on a ruckman/fowards, I'd rather rookie a VFL type ruckman just like we did with Jenkins and mould them into an AFL type player if they are available...

Just feel that that drafting ruckmen is in the end lottery.

Yes - But as it stands 24hrs out Number 3 is still undecided. Usually the top 5 or 6 is signed, sealed and delivered 2 or 3 days out.

Billings has been locked in for weeks. Which of Aish and Scharenberg goes at 6 and which at 7 is the only question in the top 8.

Only if your expecting immediate impact, but we have the luxury of not making that a priority...

I'd rather take a ruck that is going to be dominant in 4-5 years time than an average plodder...

You still need ruck depth, Cats had it Ottens, West, King, Simpson, Mumford and that other guy (mind blank)

Lions had it with Keating, Mcdonald, the guy who dislocated his shoulder and Hille helped him out (boy im getting forgetful)

Fremantle have it with Sandilands, Clarke, Griffin, Bradley to an extent.

Hawks are getting it now with Mcevoy and Hale.

We use to have it Madden, Salmon, Somerville and Barnes.

Just because Sydney doesn't follow a particular model doesn't make it right.

It all depends on what we want.

It seems to me to be getting quite greedy if we expect to be recruiting 198cm + guys with the athleticism, nous and skill to be key position forwards and rucks late in drafts. Availability of these guys late in drafts, I'm thinking of Vardy and, from what I've been reading, Conlon, seems to be about injury troubles more than anything.

If we want a big guy to develop into a first ruck and not much else then, yes, the later picks and rookie selections do seem to be the way to go.

On the draft profiles we are killing two birds with the one selection with a guy like Conlon or Apeness, just to pluck names, because they are said to have the skill set to be both proper forwards and rucks which are both positions we need to address. I would have no problem selecting this type of player at 26 and I would not want to see us gamble on availability or something as far off and uncertain as someone who may or may not be available next year.

We'd still also need to select some ruck cover to put onto the rookie list.

I'd be very happy if we ended up with a forward/ruck, Thorpe and a maturish rookie listed ruckman because we need those types of players. Whether or not they are worth it is an entirely different matter and we'll know tonight.

Personally I don't think any of the highly 'ranked' kids that are Ruck/KPF that would realistically be available at Pick #26 are worth it.. you can find heaps of options for bigger guys as long term project players via Rookie or #55..

Still think a classy kid at #26 is the way to go, preferably one that knows how to kick goals too...

With our 'window' opening next season then we need kids who will make an impact in the next 2-3 seasons.. not a skinny KPF that may take 5-6 years to develop if he does...

Exactly, we need a tall that can make an impact next year, none of which from the draft other then Boyd look ready to do so. I'd rather a VFL ruckman on our rookie list come in and pinch hit if something disastrous happens and is called upon... I pray Merrett slides to 26

It is interesting that EVERY year for the past five, I think the bombers have said they are 'looking for a ruckman' in the draft.. only never to find one..!!

As I see it, we would need both Paddy AND TBC to go down to need a replacement, if one goes down then we probably pay the other with JD pinch hitting in the ruck..

Fletcher also could be used, very very sparingly, as a back up ruckmen if the unthinkable were to happen.

Additionally, the chances of ANY ruckmen taken with pick #26 or later being ready to play (even as a backup) next year are slim to none..

JD and Fletch? huh NO WAY.

I love how tall players get blanket covered as Ruckman, JD maybe possibly could pinch hit but Id rather him up forward.

I think you missed the bit where rines said "if the unthinkable were to happen"...

fun fact, dustin fletcher was recruited as a ruckman

i get the point though. i think mature rookie listed ruckman is the way to go and if we need to upgrade and don't have a spot then someone like a sean gregory might get mystery OP (D Heppell juniors style)

You've clearly not had as close a look at him as myself.
I have watched all of Tasmania's games down here, the kid is underrated, I believe at the end of their careers that Eli will be better than KK.
Has MASSIVE upside, just needs to add muscle to his frame, has everything.

Would be absolutely stoked if we pick him.
