Throw in Ebert, Vince and Adcock to those four (not so much Houli). I am thinking about going with two of those mid pricers. I believe a couple should improve their average by around 15ppg (Gibbs 08 comes to mind). All of them showed the potential to score big but consistancy was an issue.

I remember reading last year a general rule saying not to pick players that were good pick ups the previous season. I may be the only one but I disagree to a certain extent as i see very good potential in this price range for the midfielders.

Am I the only one who thinks that 'Second Year Blues' (ie. players in their second year almost never perform as well as their first) is a bit of a myth?

From a DT point of view, often they perform as well as their first year, but this is no good in DT. They don't make money, don't average enough to be keepers and are just annoying. Scores of 60 are fine for someone at $90k, but when they are $250k you want more than that.

Heres one ive been working on - thoughts appreciated.

Andrew Walker v Chad Cornes

- Both have durability concerns from 2008, though have OK records over their careers
- Both have upside
- Both play majority of their time in midfield, but also sweep across half back

Andrew Walker

2004___15 games___39.2 ___1 times 100+___1 times 80+
2005___18 games___42.5
2006___18 games___70.7 ___3 times 100+___7 times 80+
2007___22 games___77.3___4 Times 100+___8 times 80+
2008___07 games___82.1 ___1 Times 100+___4 times 80+

- Averaged 89.4 over last 5 rounds of 2008
- Finished the season off strongly (was actually playing football, unlike Chad who had surgery)
- High draft pick (most come good in the end)
- Increased midfield time in 2009
- Judd has taken Walker under his wing at training, something i see as very positive
- More unique than Chad
- Carlton to rise
- Still young and entering prime, will turn 23 in 2009
- Approximately 15k cheaper
- Always built and improved upon the year before
- 87% Time on Ground

Chad Cornes

1999___06 games___22.5
2000
2001___22 games___61.1___1 time 100+____6 times 80+
2002___22 games___74.2___2 times 100+___7 times 80+
2003___19 games___84.7___3 times 100+___13 times 80+
2004___21 games___89.1___7 times 100+___14 times 80+
2005___17 games___95.5___8 times 100+___12 times 80+
2006___19 games ___90.2___10 times 100+__12 times 80+
2007___22 games___100.7__13 times 100+__18 times 80+
2008___13 games___85.5___05 times 100+__07 times 80+

- Averaged 108.2 over first 5 rounds of 2008,
- Also started very strongly previously averaging 101 over first 6 of 2007, and 102 over first 6 of 2006
- Offers another captain option
- Proven dreamteamer over last 6 years
- Ageing – now 29 years old
- 90% Time on Ground

Conclusion:

With a shift into the midfield, and with potential increase in TOG by about 5% for Walker, he has good upside, and probably equal amount of injury as Chad. Chad has the track record though, he is consistent, scores a good number of tonnes – providing a captain option – and has been near top of the backs for previous years. Chad could also be underpriced, andwhilst he is ageing, he could increase his average by about 10ppg IMO (ave 90-100 IMO), though I see a similar points rise for the much younger walker (90-95 IMO). Due to Chad’s strong starts to the season over the last 3 years, and that added captain choice, I see him as the better option. Though if Chad is classed as a centre only, walker IMO would be a worthy replacement. Or maybe you could start with both if you dont already have a hodge, fisher or bowden in your team.

Preferences?

One query i have about that summary Lakey, i don't see Walker actually increasing his playing time in the midfield. From the impression i got at the back end of last year, Ratten is keen on playing up forward. The options in our forward line last year weren't anything to ride home about but putting Walker and Yarran inside 50 will vastly improve our potential scoring power. I think you'll find Walker will play much more up the ground and provide a target up forward. I don't think he will be cut out of midfield (wing) time because he does provide pace and dash but i wouldn't say there would be an increase of midfield to for AW.

Good summary though mate and i do agree Cornes is the better option. I know Chad is aging but Walkers shoulders worry a little too much.

If both are fit and classified as backs, I'm going to pick both. I think Chad is just about an automatic selection if named in the backs, as he's underpriced due to the injuries he had at the end of last year. He's still only 29 so that's not going to stop me picking him up.

As for Walker - I've had my eye on him from the start. The two things in particular that I like, and which you also pointed out, are that he's a high draft pick and that Carlton are on the up. I remember him ripping up WCE in his first game. Apparently is very fit - tearing up time trials and whatnot. With all that, I think he could be a genuine superstar, so I'm prepared to take the punt on his shoulders.

Problem is Chad wont be a back :(

Interesting cruiser. Because from what i read on the carlton board, and also asked a couple of them, they said walker was likely to play mainly MF time in 2009 - been working in MF, working in centre square with judd etc, that sort of vibe. But i can see how playing him inside 50 would make the FW line much stronger for you.

So a different position does potentially add some uncertainty to walker.

Who else are others looking to replace chad with if he isnt a back? find the extra money and put in another of fisher/goddard? Going for newman?

I havent thought about it a great deal, though when i get my prospectus, Chads page will be the first i turn to (then deledios - still hoping he'll be a FW!).

Already have fisher, goddard and newman. Really don't know what i am going to do without Chad Cornes. Might have to ponder H Shaw or N Bock :(

I had X Ellis all locked in until he did his hip :(

Enright instant lock???? Geez calm down boys!

Look to be very top heavy their chad if youve got fisher, goddard, newman, chad and enright...
