I agree. While an argument was made for his durability somewhere else, I for one will not be touching him. Same with Chad, Drummond and Chris Johnson. Looking for value/durability in my starting lineup.

Chad is an interesting one. I think most people seem to agree that he is under priced at 379 and is great value on ability to score above his price. It is purely a question with durability for Chad.

Aside from his debut year in 1999 when he was making his way into the side, last year was the first and only time he played less than 17 games. So personally I am willing to take the 'risk' on him.

His durability is definately a concern for me. IIRC he was forced into surgery last season with a number of iunjuries (hand, knee, were there more?). With that record from last season given his age I think I will stick away. There are other safer options around that price mark IMO

I think Port took the view of lets get the surgery now and get a full pre season into him. Certainly open to looking at other options. Who else at that price (379) is capable of averaging 100?

I dont think anyone in that price range is capable of averaging 100. I believe Newman and Heater (both a little cheaper) are capable of averaging 90+. By 'safer' I am taking into account both scoring ability and durability issues. Chad may average 100 but I dont think he will play 20+ games so I will not be picking him.

Heater has that acquired brain injury risk though and Heater will put up 20 scores :) Yeah i already have Newman :)

Can I get your take on Davenport as to where he will likely play, and his chances of breaking into the team?

I am thinking Heater will not be picked in huge numbers next year. Has shown the ability to score 140+ when not tagged - I am hoping MM is working on tactics to shake the hard tag for season 09, perhaps a run through the midfield?

If Chad was a bit cheaper there is no question as to whether I would pick him. But for that price I would be wanting to be pretty sure I was getting a 22 game premium.

Locked him in my side. I would think they would get games into him like they did for Rodan. We have a crap backline so i wouldn't be surprised to see him play half back, or a tagging role. I will go to the family fun day/trial game and see where he gets a run there.

Cheers buddy

Another one I am interested in, is Lade. Is he going to be relegated to South again in your eyes or whats the go there? I think Brogan could be decent if Lade doesn't get too much time..

Hard to say. The game keeps getting quicker and quicker, and lade is great for his tap work not pace. If the AFL goes to 4 boundary umpires instead of 2 then he will struggle to get to some of the throw ins. Personally in DT i went with the lock and leave, 2 good rucks and hopefully never have to worry. If i was looking for a value pick i would be leaning more towards Brogan than Lade. But brogan at 317k, Ottens at 329k. Probably go ottens. just my thoughts.

Of course if Lade and/or brogan get a reasonably long injury between now and NAB cup, then Giles or Lobbe could get a fair bit of game time.

What do people think of Masten vs Swallow?

Masten: Looks like a future gun but only played 9 games last season...

Swalllow: Is $80k cheaper than Masten (important pt to mention cause that money could be handy elsewhere) and looks set to break back into North's best 22 after a stellar pre season. Played 22 games in '07 and averaged around 70. Also an article a couple of weeks back saying Laidley had him working on more of an 'outside' role last season so should score even higher than 07

The other way of looking at it is he has played just one full season in 6 years. That record is not about to improve as he gets older either.

I actually think it's the opposite. Chad was playing with one hand, one knee and one shoulder and was almost useless. He could easily have had surgery earlier but he wanted to play in the Showdown. He certainly wasn't 'managed' just to get a full pre-season.

I'm not sure he can average 100 again. As he gets older I think we will see much less of him in the midfield. He will still score well and is underpriced but we could see him play forward and back a bit more.

Interesting points. If he missed 1-2 games i wouldn't really care would have cover. Playing back could very well help his scores. Rumours that he might play wing (richo role?) all to up in the air i guess. Certainly looking ripped in all the training reports. I guess the other question would be qill the captaincy have a positive or negative effect on his scoring.

Oh and the other side to your coin "Chad was playing with one hand, one knee and one shoulder and was almost useless." Exactly that. one hand, knee and shoulder and he still averaged 85 :)

No Problems, now what's your take on Petrenko :)

I would find it very hard to leave him out of any side that I end up with year. Had a very good year in the SANFL last year and earned a call up from the rookie list, which there was no real need to do. Came very close to selection being the emergency a number of times, and with the departures of Massie & Bassett I would find it very hard to him not to get a number of games throughout the year. Only real issue is that I'd find it hard to put him in our best 22 without seeing him play with the team. May not be in round one, but if he gets a shot I'd back him to score decently and keep his spot.

I'd imagine he is competing with Gallman for a spot and would think he is ahead of him in terms of getting a game. One definately to watch in the NAB cup (as is everyone else I guess). EDIT - definately has the body to play too.

Chad: Im losing interest. Really want to be durable, and i think chances of him playoing 20+ games are slim.

Completely agree with DW, couldnt of said it any better:

Also agree.

He averaged 100 in 2006 - thats 18-24 months ago now. Thats a long time. Back then he was 27. I doubt he can average 100 again, but i think 90-95 is realistic.

Brogan >>> Ottens IMO. Ottens is too injury prone, brogan averaged 92.2 over last 5 matches too! Just my thoughts though.

Swallow: Could be a great pick, not sure if in 22 though, watch NAB cup.

Petrenko: love this guy, watch him in NAB cup.

Agree there are question marks and risks with him (and i think there are with most players). I am just not liking anything else at his price point. I dont like the 20s that H Shaw puts up.

What about your mob Lakey, anything good going to come from the swans this DT year?

Lakey, do you know much about Jarred Moore - can't say I remember seeing much of him. Is he a small forward only or does he play midfield? Any other info? Would you get him?

To be honest guys, dont know all that much about how the swans are travelling in terms of DT potential.

Few things to watch in preseason though:

Nick malceski: fitness, confidence, his skills, and generally how he goes, because he could be a great pickup and could average 80-85 IMO.

The rucks: White seems destined for time as a KP player with leo barry retiring after 2009, so that leaves a spot on the swans bench for a ruck - obviously currie seems the one, but orreal might even get one or two games towards the back end of the season.

Adam Goodes: Is he classed as a FW? PLayers classed as FWs who play midfield can be gold, and after a poor year in 2008 (IMO) i think he could bounce back.

Some youth: Mickey O, Barry, Hall, Kenelly, Kirk, Crouch all possible retirees after 2009, with some already signalling their intentions. This could mean roos bloods some youth, particularly in second half of season, meaning perfect oppurtunities of cash cow downgrades.

Ed Barlow: showed a bit early, but then got pushed out of the team. Can he return? Talk of him being 'next adam goodes' is rubbish IMO, though i think there is upside and potential for him.

Veszpremi: i love this guy. Think he plays his footy very well. Think he will start in pocket early on in season, but may drift up ground across HF and maybe even wing.

Mattner: Id stay well away. With malceski, kennelly, rhys shaw all in the team, i think his scoring and output may be influenced a bit.

Moore: Dont know a whole lot about this kid. Broke out last year when he finally got an opportunity, though i dont know if the swans have a bolter like him for 2009 (maybe barlow?). Dont think he has the tank to play MF full time, may drift up onto the wings though. I wouldnt pick him.

Im not the best judge, as i dont get to see them play that often (usually have football all saturday arvo making it hard to get to both arvo games and night games - 2.5 hour drive from where i am).

Just my thoughts...
