I'd heard that Isaac Smith will retire if Geelong wins, but then on the news the other night he said he wants to go an extra year regardless. So not sure. Reason for talking about pulling the pin was due to the mental side of the game, i.e., having to be primed week in, week out. His body's fine
Interesting how few players we have contracted beyond 2024. I realise a lot of that is due to the age profile of our list, but still, to have almost the entire team coming out of contract within the next two years is unusual. A quick scan of Footywire confirms that the only club with fewer players contracted beyond 2024 than us is Hawthorn.
Very interesting post. What this says to me is the the list management team has a lot of flexibility over the next 2 years to shape the team. Great position to be in.
For 2022 out of the 12 players you have listed there are really only 3 must re-signs (assuming Selwood retires) Hawke, 2E and Zuthrie and a couple of most likely (Rohan and Simpson or stevens). The other 6/7 are choices - of which I think most will be left for new players coming in.
2023 even more so…you have 18 coming out of contract…and IMO only 7 are must signs (SDK, Tyson, Atkins, Miers, Neale, Blitz, Close) so the other 11 are choices. Which means you can pick say 5 of them and have 6 spots free again.
So can have say up to 12 new players come into the squad over next 2 years to cover the change of the list. You would guess over that 2 year period we potentially move on 2E, Smith, Celglar, Dal, Higgins, Frank, Sav, Selwood, Narkle, Rohan. that is 10 and then have choices over Stanly, Menegola and whatever of the young players coming out of contract aren’t going to make it
will be very different team in 2024 - but could actually still be pretty good?
One big thing they look for apparantly is whether the player is still kicking as long as they were - a massive sign as to whether to give it away or not. Higgins the prime example of someone who has lost 10m on his kicking…. Smith is still kicking it 60m+ so i reckon they think he can give one more year…
