Ask her if she remembers ever going to the store across the road from the dan Oconnell hotel - was an italian styled shop that had the espresso bar if you have Catoggio cousins i take it your of italian descent too. Your mum could well have known my mum or her sisters thru the local dances etc in the area. Small world eh !

I will ask her mate. Yeah it is a small world!☺

I've run into Dylan Buckley at the local dog park a few times. His little Frenchies and my pugs get along quite well. I've had a chat with him but have avoided anything footy related. Very funny guy! Mark Robinson from the Herald Sun also walks at the park. Can be seen with a baseball cap, dark sunnies and a constant stream of cigarette smoke coming from his mouth (in a beautiful park). People usually stand around and have a chat while our dogs play...Robbo is a bit cool for that....;)

Great read. I was lucky enough to have met and occasionally socialised with most of the Carlton players from mid seventies to turn of century.

The thing that struck me on reflection on reading this thread was how many 'good blokes' in the 79-82 sides there were. Sheldon, Marcou, Maylin, Buckley, Sellers, Hunter, Jones, Perovic etc etc were almost all entirely just very easy to chat with and extremely natural. They would party hard (and unbelievably self confident when it came to football) but were mostly so generous with their time and conversation socially.
I would contend that other eras did not have the same quality of people off the field. In fact other teams had more arrogant personalities (of course always exceptions - Kouta, Kernahan, F. Murphy) socially. Dont get me wrong the 79-82 side were supremely confident about their ability to beat anybody. They just didn't put people down socially or make you feel inferior.
I wonder if this is related to their success on the field? Makes me think about the discussion in another thread about Marchbank. Is he the supremely confident type in his football ability of 79-82 sides which is a great thing or the annoying arrogance of many who have walked through the door since then.

My sister once pashed Camporeale at the Sorrento Hotel...

Was he floating around the outer edges of the dancefloor waiting for the easy gather?

I'm wondering if this is a trend in general rather than a reflection of the teams from the 80's and 00's.

Back in the 80's these guys were almost amateur footballers. They got paid reasonable coin to kick a footy around on the weekend, go to a couple of training sessions. They still drank and smoked and lived life pretty normal-ish. They were just normal guys who were good at footy.

These days, these kids are feted from high school, put on a pedestal during underage comps and once drafted spend a large chunk of their time inside the club which in a very professional environment. Many on big salaries. Things like social media and 'fame' mean a footballer in the 80's could go to the local supermarket/pub and be a normal person. These days everyone knows who they are are nosing in on their business.

There are always going to be nice people and complete d*heads and everything in between. But I think maybe these days sportspeople (globally) just probably aren't as friendly as back in the old days.
