Joel Selwood will become Geelong’s longest serving captain in history after the club’s 2018 player leadership group was announced at tonight’s Season Launch.

The six-time All-Australian has led Geelong into battle 139 times and is on track to surpass the legendary Reg Hickey’s 142 games as captain.

Selwood will lead Geelong for a seventh straight season after he was appointed captain ahead of the 2012 campaign, taking over from Cameron Ling.

Selwood will be supported by six teammates in a seven-man player leadership group which includes, Patrick Dangerfield (vice captain), Harry Taylor (deputy vice captain), Mark Blicavs, Mitch Duncan, Scott Selwood and Zach Tuohy.

I'd get rid of Tuohy, Scooter and Blitz.
Over inflated leadership groups are stupid and you don't need a title to be a leader.
That said well done to all I assume elected by their peers.

Mitch would have to be firming as our next captain after Joel (assuming he doesn't give it up after this season)

dont need Taylor(age), blitz and Touhy. Selwood, Selwood, Dangerfield and Duncan would've been a great leadership group by themselves,

good to see they got rid of Hawkins and Guthrie tho.

Hawkins & Guthrie stood down - their choice to not be involved this year

Agreed. Tuohy not accountable enough as a defender, S. Selwood needs to focus on getting his body right, and Blicavs needs to learn how to play a role well enough to justify his spot in the side.

Leadership groups shouldn't just be comprised of the best players but they should at least be a firm member of the best 18 and at a face value at least, Joel, Danger, Duncan, and Taylor should be enough. There doesn't seem to be enough on-field leadership currently for such a large group to be justified; perhaps they're trying to compensate for a lack of actual leadership by designating an excessive amount of formal leaders.

Tells me a lot about a player who can't get on the field is in the 'leadership' group.

With all due respect, we don't know what players are like behind closed doors, we don't know who shows what on the track, and who has the loudest or most worthy voices in meetings, game day etc etc... And with it being peer voted that is clearly what they are being voted in off.

I dare say all players in there are no doubt prominent around the club and leaders... I just don't like or see the need for over inflated leadership groups, it's risking the promotion of mediocrity and adding too many cooks.

Fwiw I don't think the title of being in the leadership group impacts Scooter getting back on the field, Blitz locking down a position etc etc

Hot take: people attribute far more meaning to the PLG than is warranted.
I'm not so sure mate. It's a little hard to be lead by a peer that constantly injured.

And I put a lot of weight into on field leadership.

Maybe Scooter's inclusion is to keep up morale for those in the injury group with him...

Leadership group doesn’t need more than 4 members.
Not a big issue for me. If any are redundant, they'll step down. These sorts of stories just reflect that we're eager for the season to start. Who could really care if we had 4, 6, or 7 in the leadership group?

Well done to all selected. Who are we to judge players voted by their teammates to lead their them.
7 may be a little high. 5-6 should be enough.
Agree

What about off field issues and team morale etc?
SS may be a perfect go-to person for players that are sick, injured, homesick etc. We just don't know what the job descriptions are for members of a leadership group in an organisation like GFC, nor should we. But I'd be certain it pertains to a lot more than what we see on match day.

Scooter and Blitz are there because of their training standards and how they conduct themselves off the field. Tuohy must have made a real impression to get elevated.

You don’t think Paddy will get a go next?

I think it will depend on how long Selwood continues as our captain and what long term leadership options the club believes they have.

Selwood turns 30 in May this year, while Danger turns 28 in April and Duncan 27 in June.

I know that both Harley and Ling were older captains, they both were 28 turning 29 during their first year as captain. Our next captain may be older during their first year depending on Selwoods future - and maybe also a sign we need to look at who is potentially in the younger group of leaders
