Who should be in the player leadership group and why?

How many players should be in the PLG?

How much responsibility should be intrusted to them as opposed to the coaches or administration?

Should any of our new established recruits be placed into the PLG before they have even played a game for the club?

Discuss.

In 2015 it was Joel Selwood (captain), Harry Taylor (vice-captain), Tom Hawkins, Andrew Mackie and Corey Enright.

Candidates for inclusion are only (IMO) Dangerfield, Duncan and Guthrie.

And (again IMO) only Enright and Mackie could potentially step down.

Probably a good decision if you wanted to develop the leadership of the younger brigade.

I think that it's the right time to bring some younger players into the PLG. Along with your candidates I think that Blitz and also Caddy should be considered aswell.

Cockatoo as a VC is the obvious selection... as for the others, I'll take a wait and see approach, although Motlop's training the house down and should be strongly considered.

Good call on Blicavs although no hurry with him. I'd like to see him keep improving for another year or two before taking on that responsibility.

Caddy - not sure. I'd like to see him find consistency in himself before taking on leadership duties.

That's actually a good point on Caddy. You're right, he needs to find consistency in his performance before being considered for the PLG.

I'm usually not one to sit on the fence but with Blitz I'm kind of comfortable with either way TBH.

I'd have it as
C Selwood
VC Taylor
Hawkins Duncan Mackie

I don't think we should move any of our recruits into the leadership group in there first year.
Guthrie, Caddy and Blicavs aren't quite there yet but are heading in the right direction.
I don't believe in having a bloated leadership group. 5 or 6 is the right number(s).

Agree with everything stated here. Let Enright have the year off re Leadership group - just let him do his thing and enjoy the year and the success IMO. Seeing he will not be there the following season we need to bring some new faces in and this is probably true of Mackie as well - as he will be most likely gone in two years. This does not stop Mackie and Enright from being on and off field leaders by the way they play and train. But we need to recognise that leadership, according to a lot of ex-player commentators, is a very important thing out on the field.

It can make the difference between a win or a loss in a tight game. So that being the case we need to make sure we have out leadership team right and ready to take us into a new successful period. So let's get two new faces - maybe 3 as you suggest. Dangerfield is a pretty natural leader form where I sit - so sure put him and he will be in it for the next 6 years IMO.

Then Duncan for sure as he seems to have grown with more on field responsibility as a consistent high performing player. Next step is team leadership for him and I think it will help his career - the recognition for his past games and work - and that he can still add more thru his leadership in the team. Some players do even better with some leadership responsibility. He could be one I think.

For me Guthrie is a fine choice but he does seem a bit a reclusive and to stay in the background at this stage in his career. But for sure he has shown on the field he could be a leader. Just as good maybe Blitz given the way he has grown as a player in such a short time and obviously has an excellent work and learning ethic. Maybe its one year too soon for both these players.

No Danger?
Something about a first year player being in the group doesn't sit right with me, be a leader without the title at the club first.

Also do they players vote on the topic? Maybe he could get in if he has impressed enough so far in pre-season.

Is it voted for by the players as in most clubs?

What!!! They don't consult Bigfooty/Geelong/Total footy members.
Preposterous!!!

As good as PFD is, he hasn't been good for GFC yet as an on field leader. I don't think there is any need to rush him in.

For mine it's a position earned not given. Not a slight on PFD - sure he'll get there just not this year.

Dangerfield is an interesting one. He is a natural leader in his prime. Would have been captain of the Crows if he'd committed to them. Just because he is yet to play a game for us should not preclude him from being part of the leadership group. It's not like we'd be doing a Carlton and appointing him captain.

I think that the players do vote, but the said player will have to nominate for the PLG first before anyone can vote for him obviously. Personally I doubt that there would be too many players that wouldn't already have the upmost respect for PFD so I'd be more than happy for him to be inducted into the PLG straight away. I can see both sides to the argument though.

I'd put danger straight in. And I have one from left field. Menzel.
I like the Menzel concert in terms of the bringing passion for the game and owning your chances when u get them - appreciating your opportunities if you will. He's prety smart as a student of the game too so that makes sense.

My only hesitation would be the reliability.. But I'm sure we have had player in PLG go out before..

Clark - Captain
Vardy - Vice Captain
Menzel, Cowan, McCarthy - Deputy vice captains.

Let the guys who are not sitting on the sidelines for most of the year focus purely on playing footy instead.
What is your actual point, Bobby?
