Any interest in Matt Eagles? Big Port Adelaide supporter, even while at Brisbane. Tall defender, played really well in the NEAFL, B.O.G in the grand final. (poor comp I know but can only play what's in front of you). Is getting on a bit, will be 30 by the time next season starts but could be a handy depth player after losing a few talls already. Will probably be content knowing he'd likely be playing for the Magpies most of the season.

Signing a 30 year old would not fit what we are apparently trying to do. i.e. Inject youth into our list.

The Crows board are reporting that...

1. Dew came to SA and met every SA based players fanult except Luko (reportedly from a friend of the family)

2. Rozee went to Europe with Luko.

So why didn't it happen this year?

Because the absolute last thing the AFL would want is for Gold Coast to lose a highly rated player when they had just announced a concession package for the Suns. It’s about the optics.

It’s probably why they were given an extra mid first round pick. That coupled with their first round pick and whatever they get for Lukosius would be like this year’s draft.

Did they threaten Luk's family or something? Surely if a player really wants to go these days nothing can be done about it.

"Citing extreme home sickness and concern over his dog's cataracts Lukoscious has made the decision to return home. The AFL will provide an extra draft pick to Gold Coast in addition to whatever they receive from the trade to compensate them for the loss of a player only one year after being drafted".

Optics back to 20/20. This years draft is stronger than next years anyway.

And for the past two trade and draft periods Power list manager Jason Cripps, more so than senior coach Hinkley, has been working “Astroball” - the latest American baseball theme in building a successful squad.

Like the 2019 MLB runner-up Houston Astros, who built their success after falling to the lowest payroll in American baseball, Port Adelaide is investing in youth, top-end draft picks - and needing to keep fans filing through the gates to avoid financial collapse.

It began last year with first-round draftees Rozee, Xavier Duursma, Zac Butters, (2012 No. 8 pick at Brisbane) Sam Mayes and (2015 No. 19) Burton.
It will continue this year with two more first-round draftees as Port Adelaide seeks to build the AFL’s best under-23 squad and uses the league’s new four-year rule for stockpiling salary cap to make big plays - as the Astros did after working youth - in the trade and free-agency market.

If true (and it's hard to trust anything out of the club), then the club lost any confidence in Ken part way through last year at the latest. This is a positive for the list management side, but as soon as that decision had been made, that even though they decided they couldn't move on Ken, there should have been more direction to play younger players over guiding to another mid-table finish.

lol talking about what Cripps is doing as if its something that hasnt been around and done for decades

Rucci wrote the article just so he could write this sentence

Gone is the quick fix with Moneyball. Port Adelaide is on the long game with Astroball or what might become the AFL’s Powerball.

jesus

And Rucc has no excuse to pretend this is new, his whole claim to fame at the Addy was having worked for the Chicago Tribune. Teams in draft and cap leagues have been tanking and building forever.

"Powerball", lol. What would that involve? Kicking the ball inside 50 as many times as you can without scoring? Trying to lose as many games by single digit margins as possible? Seeing how many consecutive seasons you can finish either 9th or 10th?

Perhaps this is exactly what is causing tension and the dis-connect we are hearing is happening between sections of the football department and Board?

I'm only spitballing, but if a Senior Coach is coaching/selecting for a contract trigger (which did/does exist) by playing senior players for the "sugar hit" and other coaches and members of the football department are coaching/selecting for longer term development, while the Board flip-flops between wanting both, is it really any surprise the messaging and actions are so mixed?

I walked past Rooch outside of Central Market about an hour ago. Should've told him that he's a campaigner.
shoulda shoved a pie in his face and held it there

So have I got this right?

We transferred players money from 2019 into 2020 not because we are poor but because we are stockpiling salary cap. By paying minimum in 2019, we save around $650,000 in salary cap. If we pay the minimum next year we save $700,000.

It means in 2021, we have banked $1,350,000 and can pay 105% of salary cap for the next two years until we have used up the $1,350,000 saved in the last 2 years. So in 2021, we will spend $1,400,000 more in player payments than 2020 ($700k to get from 95% salary cap, $700k getting to 105% salary cap).

Welcome to Port, Jack Lukosius. No wonder he was happy to sit on a base draftee contract instead of taking the pay rise to $500,000 offered by GCS.

I wonder if people will still be keen on Luko after he spends another year playing off half-back. We're not exactly short on half-backs.
