List Mgmt. Player List Management 2020-21

No need to keep Mayes he has shown he isnt best 22. Would prefer to give the young guys a taste if we have injuries.
I'd have him as an experienced mid in the reserves for 1 more year to lend a hand to Drew, Mead, Bergman etc. Unless we can find a really good delisted free agent.

Mayes is a good older depth player. The only problem with good older depth players is Ken's penchant for playing them over younger players when he shouldn't. Admittedly this occurred less in 2020, but Neade, S. Gray, Sutcliffe all got too long a run before they were delisted / traded and he couldn't use them as go to players. With Ebert and Westhoff gone there's the concern, that given our hole in players between 22 - 26, that Mayes gets games over Bergman / Williams / Mead etc. because Ken wants 'some older heads' out there.

On the other hand he DID play Butters, Rozee, Duursma and Georgiadis as 18/19 year olds so has learned.

Mayes is great depth as he can play forward, back, mid. With smaller lists, this allows us to develop younger players. We won’t have injury lists like last year very often. If we are about winning a flag, Mayes plays ahead of Bergman, Williams, Mead, Burgoyne, etc unless they earn their selection.

Top 4 teams do not gift games to youngsters, the youngsters have to actually earn it.

If Mayes is playing as a midfielder, we might as well be playing the kids as we'd clearly be hovering in the bottom six.

Wing/half back at AFL level, Inside and outside mid at SANFL level.

Magpies should be a good chance at the SANFUL premiership right? Looks to be our strongest depth ever.
In terms of depth, backline (talls and smalls) is great, outside mids and small/medium forwards great, Hayes is great.

Inside midfield, only 1 key forward and no ruck support the biggest weaknesses.

We should get Jacko as a Maggies top up with a promise to select him in one of the mid-season drafts if we get a long term ruck, KPD or Dixon injury.

Hes not brilliant but he's versatile and a great club man to help the young guys develop.

Interested to see what happens with him, I'd imagine a few players will end up being Eastern Seaboard League listed players.

Looking at the mid season "drafting" options this year I think it would be very smart for us to keep a list spot open rather than using a very late pick at the draft.

There are sure to be players that haven't been exposed much who show that they have come on in leaps and bounds over the Covid period and not all clubs will have spaces.

Our depth and Magpies would be nowhere near as strong as the the 2019 side.

We lack key forward depth, also unlikely to have a backup ruck, whilst we are also shallow in the midfield.

We've no doubt got some good young talent, and our 20-30th player depth will hopefully improve as our kids get games, but beyond that we drop away.

Out bottom players (ie not in the top 30) Garner, Burgoyne, Mead, Frederick, Pasini.

Burgoyne and Pasini we haven't really seen, but we still have to fill 5 spots. After Jones we might go into deficit. So whilst we'll put Schofield in, whose a rookie list prospect at the moment, the next 3 picks will be another three rookies or extremely late draft picks in an extremely shallow draft.

There's zero doubt that unless we go and get a few mature agers we will go in with shallower depth. Especially than 2019 which was an extremely deep list.

Leaving out our Prelim Final players, Fantasia, Georgiades, Aliir, Lienert and Mayes:

Woodcock Williams. T.Burgoyne
Bergman. ............ ..............
Schofield. Drew. Farrell
Bonner. Pasini. Jones
Frederick. Goldsack. Garner
Hayes. ............. Mead

So your point is well made. That side will struggle. We have got 2 or 3 more to add to our AFL list but if I had my way that would wait until the 2021 Draft Windows.
