This may have been covered in other threads, but it is amazing Pyke and the team haven't changed things up. With the Sloane tag, 1-2 players extra in defense and pressure around the ball tactic, I have expected to see more attempts to combat.

Sloane to wing, HBF or HFF.
I would love to see Pyke move Sloane to wing or HBF or as a defensive forward, playing him on Hodge would have been a start on Thursday

Kelly into the middle
With Cheney and Doedee pushing (Otten back to SANFL), I would be pushing the hard running bull into the centre. We need mongrel and he has it in spades.

Greenwood, Crouches, Cameron and Kelly in the middle
I would even add Lynch to that to get some size, inside winning with outside disposal.

Man up in the forward half with marking players.
Whilst charlie is great at pressuring up forward as is Knight, they are not much chop at aerial contests. Adding Sloane, Kelly, Greenwood or even Menzel to man up the loose players will curb this tactic. To do this it means we have to go man on man in defense and I don't think they like to as they like having one of Laird, Smith or Lever free.

If I was to pick one option it would be to release Bull to the centre. I remember when he was drafted, the coaches had to pull him back as he was going in too hard and hurting team mates.

This so called "team flexibility" Pyke was talking about all pre-season and we've seen none of it. Only thing we've seen in Otten go forward (mind you, with reward) however that has just turned us into a slow attack that gets rebounded on easily. Since Hampton went down, we have look slow. Something needs to change, I have always been in the moving Rory forward camp. Play him one out in the goal square. Dusty plays the position well for 5 mins every quarter. Give Sloaney a run out of the square, he's a good mark for his size, will compete in a one on one situation and could stand up and kick 2-3 goals in that period of time.

Jake Kelly doesn't have the skill set or football smarts to be an AFL midfielder.

You are right he wont break into our midfield, I think he has the capability to be the old fashioned don't worry about getting a kick just shut down & run with player X on the other team mongrel tagger.

If Selwood is kept under 25 possessions Geelong have lost this year, we need to develop a tagger.

L Brown.

Is Brown really the right man we should be doing this with though? He's a great one on one defender, but I just don't see him being aggresive enough against the premier midfielders in the competition and niggling them enough to influence their game

Smith to midfield
Knight in midfield as tagger when fit. Use kelly in this role until then.
Lever to chb. Hartigan out coz hes useless and cant kick. Must have better kickers in defence. Maybe bring cheney back in.
Seed to hbf.
Not convinced of the value of brown. Not bad defensively but offers nothing offensively. Possible use in midfield as tagger.

Try:

Sloane to the wing. Waste of time hard tagging that and yet he is still smart enough to do damage.

Smith to the other wing. Seeds to the backline. Kelly out.

Cameron to the midfeild.

Lever to play KPD and Hartigan out. Doedee to play intercept role.

Knight as a hard tagger.

Menzel to half forward Douglas out. This one is more like a swing for the fences option where we dont lose much if it fails.

Gallucci into the side.

Beech, Otten, Mackay, Thommo never to return to the side except to cover injuries.

Brown has a bit of mongrel in him. Low centre of gravity too. Hard to push off the ball.

Brown is not the right man. Knight is though. Has pace, endurance, tackling ability and can win the ball. The fact there is not a spot in our team is a failure of our coaching staff and ultimately Don Pyke. You can't tell me that Knight cannot play the role that Vince plays at Melbourne.

Good but would also like Atkins out and Gallucci to play his role. Atkins kicking efficiency is deplorable. Also would like Jacobs out, he is a spent force. More upside with O'brien. Also think there may be a spot for Keath in Hartigans spot. Not sold on Menzel but seems to be improved in the Sanfl. Agree Douglas needs to be ousted and traded end of year. The other problem is walker. Gov back in will help him I hope.

Sloane to the wing in a hard running Burton style role. Lynch to as far away as possible from a contest, he's putrid in close. OTTO or JJ out, don't care which they go for. We can argue who's a better forward, I'd go JJ, but the coaches first need to choose to fix the structural issue. Smith to the midfield with any of Cheney, Doedee or Seed to replace him. Don't care which, Doedee I'd prefer, but get something different in the midfield.

That's what I'd start with.

Yeah Gallucci should be given a go. I am not off Atkins but to me he is a 22nd player at the moment. Only useful if the other 21 are on.

Dont agree with ROB. He is delist material for mine. Cant get away with a ball drop like that at AFL level in my opinion. Certainly would like to see Keath its a massive Ask to go from a non-football rookie background to being a KPD. I feel thay Hugh is the exception rather than the rule. But would like to see how he goes.

I dont feel we should consider dropping Walker. I feel we have to persist with him and demand he lift. How are the coaches not instructing him to just concentrate on doing the things that work and quit doing the things that he is simply not effective at. He has to play to his strengths and stop messing about with the rest. Have some discipline in his game.

I just think it's more a matter of ensuring we pick horses for courses and not simply try and pick our best 22 (based on a game plan that's now been easily picked apart). I realise you want to keep a pretty consistent line-up, but I think the time's come for us to experiment a little with a few roles. I.e pick a best 19 or 20 and match up the last two positions based on the opponent. It seemed to me that we were lazy in our selections against the Hawks, but Clarkson and co had really studied us hard, and picked a team that could beat us.
