Lets start with BOG:
Tarkyn Lockyer-9- Perhaps won us the game with his skills and the repeat of the steal from Anzac Day. Classy.
Anthony Rocca-4- Gave a contest like he always does but really struggled to make an impact on the game.
Chris Bryan-7- We didnt kick a goal for a long period of time but he stood up and kicked three in the most important quarter of the match.
Scott Burns-7-Was clinical at the stoppages and was cool under pressure
James Clement-8- Superb as ever keeping Welsh to just one goal and counter attacking with the Shaw boys.
Travis Cloke-6-Looked dangerous up forward but has to get his goal kicking right
Shannon Cox-3-Struggled throughout the night and turned the ball over a bit
Leon Davis-7- Best game of the year
Brad Dick-4- Harassed and tackled well but didnt keep Macleod quiet
Chris Egan-5- Started the game very well but fell out
Josh Fraser-7- He too played his best game of the year.
Ben Johnson-7- Worked superbly with Davis and Burnsy in the middle.
Nick Maxwell-7- Solid as ever.
Shane Obree-5- A few possessions but no real influence on the result
Harry O'brien-6- Very good again stopping his opponent. Stronger.
Scott Pendlebury-6- Looked dangerous and disposed the ball well
Presti-6-Adelaide got a run on us when he went off and when he came back, brought that stability to our defence
Heath Shaw-7-Attacked and kicked the ball beautifuly all game
Rhyce Shaw-8-Was brilliant off half-back and was good with his skills for a change
Dane Swan-8- Was excellent in the middle and very good disposal
Dale Thomas-5-Tryed hard and pursued as always but little influence
Alan Toovey-4-Looks a likely type but struggled to keep Goodwin quiet.

These 4 guys are now all early to mid 20s and are our highest possession winners. Fantastic to watch. Even the disposal was pretty good last night. Sheedy said teams will work out the Shaws. Maybe but then we'll have Johnno and Swanny racking up even more.

This is Tarkyn Lockyer of 2002. Tarks and Burnsy are also playing fantastic footy.

Just gotta love our endeavour.

Good point on R Shaw, his delivery and decison making seem to have really improved. Couple of tasty pinpoint passes in traffic yesterday. Correct on Lockyer too, was BOG even though Swan had more footy. IMO O'bree was underarted as was top 10 for posessions for Pies and top 15 across all players on field with no clangers either. Notice Magpie clanger count was down last night, for once the commentators got it right when they said whoever made the fewest mistakes would win! Self evident really.

The middle-tier blokes are starting to step up and release some of the older blokes, i.e. Burns, O'Bree and Clement. One year ago, I didn't think Rhyce and Heath can play in the same team, let alone across the half-back line. They are very similar to each other; even though Heath has more ability, Rhyce is a pretty good player, and he will keep players like Lonie out of the side. Ben Johnson has worked hard to become a midfielder and Leon Davis played a role, what took him out of his comfort zone made him better, he is always going to be in and out of games but the effort is there.

I thought it was one of leon's best games hes in close ball winning ability and kicking to targets is what we need. Not to mention hes pace,I would take a game like that every week than 2 flashy goals and nothing else a week.Hes injury last year put some halt on the magpie flow which we never got back.I believe he is very important to our midfeild rotation and i think hes tackling alot more good on ya leon keep it up

egan worries me still plays like he is playing at Williamstown. Was in a one on one last night right in front of me and al he had to do was stop the crows player from getting around him because they had nothing up the ground to go to. He went to ground and mattner ran off.

Give egs a few weeks to get back into it. The boy has talent just needs a good 4 quarter game over the next few weeks to really know that he belongs. All in all the signs look great for us.

If the All-Australian team was nominated tomorrow then Rhyce and Heath would be the All-Australian Half-backs. Your thoughts?

I think both players would have to be in contention.....I think Heath would have one flank nailed with perhaps Andrew McLeod on the other flank.

Am thrilled with Rhys' season so far though.

I doubt he would get the nod from selectors but would Tarkyn Lockyer be AA right now?

Tarks would be. Easy.

Now how did I know you would jump at that suggestion?

Seriously though....he would come up for consideration but is no hope. Too many of these selectors simply go for the familiar names unless they are interstate selectors who virtually nominate only players from their respective states. (I am still bewildered how Pavlich got selcted in the backline one year when he played the season up forward).

I was flabberghasted at The Age pre-season guide to footy and reading Robert Walls predictions and reviews of teams. The only players he would mention in his snippet would be the obvious ones. He displayed no insight into young players coming through...in fact he kind of gabve the impression he doesn't know the players from teams that are not Carlton.

Tarks would have been in contention in 2001/2002. Plus the fact he was a vice - captain, is part of our leadership group... I wouldn't say he is a no-namer.

But point taken.

Jonathon Hay and Darren Gaspar were in contention in 2001 and 2002, so thats pretty irrlelevant. Its a long time ago.

In terms of AA, he's definitely a no-namer, and would not yet be on anybody's radar. Even Pie fans are finding hard to come to terms with how well he's playing.

(I'm not saying he's AA standard, and I;m not saying he's not. I'm just saying he'll find it hard to get acknowledgement for his achievements because he's spent so many years in the wilderness)

A lot of people on the main boards have rated him in their AA teams up to this point, which I found pretty interesting
