Buckley said it all didn't he...."when they bring that level of effort they are an easy team to coach". He also doesn't give himself enough because the coaching strategy today was terrific. He really hemmed them in their back half and made it very difficult for them to get a lot of go forward run and he made sure our forward line was open to get them on the counter. Anyway my votes / review;
5 Paul Seedsman
4 Jack Frost
3 Jack Crisp
2 Nathan Brown
1 Tyson Goldsack / Pendles / Adams
Adams - Very good. Was at the bottom of everything today and like his game vs Lions he made it really hard for them to get easy first possession from the stoppages. Go back and have a look at one of his efforts with about 8-12 min to go in the last. He backed into a pack and fisted out of bounds. He works hard this kid. Kicking is very ordinary at times but equally can be v good. Anyway he is walking the walk this kid.
Brown - Those suggesting he is done should probably hit the pause button. Wound back the clock and gave Carlisle a bath today. Carlisle had 6 ....yes 6 touches! Brown is best when he takes marks and intercepts. Did it today. I remember he played a game like this vs Crameri after he'd been out inj for a while a few years ago. This was as good as that effort.
Varcoe - Got the midas touch this bloke. gets on the right side of the result in big games regularly. Was ok today. Not as good as last week but he applied a lot of pressure and won some hard ball but you'd like him to impact the scoreboard a bit more. He was good though.
Frost - Gee I thought he was close to BOG. I loved how he didn't just beat Daniher he smashed him and he then went on and became an influence offensively. He got back to that attacking sort of game we saw from him last year. He has been a bit in his shell this year for mine but loved that game today.
Crisp - How good was he. He completely shut down Watson for mine. I dont know the stats but to me Watson had very little influence and Crisp was rotating through a few he seemed to have him the most. Thought was just so strong at stoppages and he would have registered a lot of metres gained. Also kicked a wonderful goal and was involved in some crucial plays. Playing a lot better than some other kids up at the Lions who were pretty high rated.
Williams - Terrific game. Shut down the 'diver' Chapman and was really strong at the contest all day. He won a huge amount of contested ball, was involved in a lot of really critical plays in the back half he used it really well. He was calmer than he'd been in the crows game and was prepared to hold it a little longer to make a better decision.
Broomhead - Wasn't his best. You wonder if occasion got to him. Did have some good moments in the 3rd when we getting game back on our terms. Some good touches and efforts. Wont be dropped though. He is the future and you want him given plenty of game time.
Ramsay - He took another step forward today. Like Williams he was calmer and more composed (other than 1-2 instances) and he made better decisions. Last 2 weeks he has shown he could be a player. His DE in the VFL was v good and he starting to find his feet a little bit. I'm still not sure but he gives effort and grunt and he gets to good positions and doesn't really get beaten 1:1. He just needs to use it better.
Cloke - wasn't a great day for tall forwards but he was the best of them. Love him leading up at the ball. It tends to create space behind him. Two nice goals.
Toovey - Didn't do much but was good defensively. Handballed more than kicked.....worked for me!
Swan - Quiet game after last week but he had some great moments and was an influence at stages.
Seedsman - Was BOG. What I loved didn't get talked about a lot. He won a lot of footy. Not sure how much he CP he won but I reckon it was a career high. He has a lot of talent and largely bc of injuries we haven't seen it yet but he has so many tools. At times I didnt actually think he used it that well - particularly when not under pressure but was rapt with how he won the footy, backed himself and ran. He is a good user and was good for a lot of today but I reckon he is better than that. Maybe was the wet.
Gault - never in the game. No influence. Surprised stayed on.
Oxley - Was ok early but occasion seemed to have him done. Still was surprised he went off instead of Gault. Didn't look happy post game
Dwyer - Came on as the sub about 10 out from 3/4 time and immediately gave us some run. He got the pace of the game quickly and he used his leg speed and decision making. Didn't always get a stat for some of the work he did. Making it hard for them to drop him back I reckon.
Elliottt - Was good but wasn't great. He made some errors at times but he kicked his 2 goals so job done.
Grundy - I thought he was terrific. Made some shocking errors but he gives it everything and I thought he beat Bellchambers. He has had a massive month and probably needs a rest but credit to the kid he is flying. His ability to get back and forward is a strength and to get himself as a link in the chain gives us another mid. Like any young kid his decision making can be a bit off but his trajectory is terrific.
Goldsack - Look I called for this bloke to go back after Crows game and so pleased he has. We look so much calmer and stronger. I like him there bc he is experienced enough to get off and intercept or get to a contest and influence it. He had some problems with his kick outs in the 2nd but wasn't all his fault. Leave him back for mine.
Langdon - I have to say that was probably the worst game I have seen him play. It wasn't a shocker so says as much about the standard he has set himself than anything else but he made a lot of errors out there today. He is such a talent you wouldn't worry about it. Dont get me wrong did some good things but he has some shockers.
White - Not a day for the big blokes. When he got it he was good but he just didn't get it enough.
Pendles - Was just ok for 3/4 's by his standards and Heppell had beaten him but he just imposed himself in that last quarter and was truly exceptional. Really an amazing skill to do that sort of thing. Lovely goal in first two. Doesn't always kick them so was good to see.
Blair - He was ok. Applied a lot of pressure and won a lot of contested possessions. He is crumbing more and Im happy with that as opposed to him trying to fly for marks all the time. He has a few breathing down his neck but he is holding them out. Didn't get a goal and small forward should be but still ok
