Buckley said it all didn't he...."when they bring that level of effort they are an easy team to coach". He also doesn't give himself enough because the coaching strategy today was terrific. He really hemmed them in their back half and made it very difficult for them to get a lot of go forward run and he made sure our forward line was open to get them on the counter. Anyway my votes / review;

5 Paul Seedsman
4 Jack Frost
3 Jack Crisp
2 Nathan Brown
1 Tyson Goldsack / Pendles / Adams

Adams - Very good. Was at the bottom of everything today and like his game vs Lions he made it really hard for them to get easy first possession from the stoppages. Go back and have a look at one of his efforts with about 8-12 min to go in the last. He backed into a pack and fisted out of bounds. He works hard this kid. Kicking is very ordinary at times but equally can be v good. Anyway he is walking the walk this kid.

Brown - Those suggesting he is done should probably hit the pause button. Wound back the clock and gave Carlisle a bath today. Carlisle had 6 ....yes 6 touches! Brown is best when he takes marks and intercepts. Did it today. I remember he played a game like this vs Crameri after he'd been out inj for a while a few years ago. This was as good as that effort.

Varcoe - Got the midas touch this bloke. gets on the right side of the result in big games regularly. Was ok today. Not as good as last week but he applied a lot of pressure and won some hard ball but you'd like him to impact the scoreboard a bit more. He was good though.

Frost - Gee I thought he was close to BOG. I loved how he didn't just beat Daniher he smashed him and he then went on and became an influence offensively. He got back to that attacking sort of game we saw from him last year. He has been a bit in his shell this year for mine but loved that game today.

Crisp - How good was he. He completely shut down Watson for mine. I dont know the stats but to me Watson had very little influence and Crisp was rotating through a few he seemed to have him the most. Thought was just so strong at stoppages and he would have registered a lot of metres gained. Also kicked a wonderful goal and was involved in some crucial plays. Playing a lot better than some other kids up at the Lions who were pretty high rated.

Williams - Terrific game. Shut down the 'diver' Chapman and was really strong at the contest all day. He won a huge amount of contested ball, was involved in a lot of really critical plays in the back half he used it really well. He was calmer than he'd been in the crows game and was prepared to hold it a little longer to make a better decision.

Broomhead - Wasn't his best. You wonder if occasion got to him. Did have some good moments in the 3rd when we getting game back on our terms. Some good touches and efforts. Wont be dropped though. He is the future and you want him given plenty of game time.

Ramsay - He took another step forward today. Like Williams he was calmer and more composed (other than 1-2 instances) and he made better decisions. Last 2 weeks he has shown he could be a player. His DE in the VFL was v good and he starting to find his feet a little bit. I'm still not sure but he gives effort and grunt and he gets to good positions and doesn't really get beaten 1:1. He just needs to use it better.

Cloke - wasn't a great day for tall forwards but he was the best of them. Love him leading up at the ball. It tends to create space behind him. Two nice goals.

Toovey - Didn't do much but was good defensively. Handballed more than kicked.....worked for me!

Swan - Quiet game after last week but he had some great moments and was an influence at stages.

Seedsman - Was BOG. What I loved didn't get talked about a lot. He won a lot of footy. Not sure how much he CP he won but I reckon it was a career high. He has a lot of talent and largely bc of injuries we haven't seen it yet but he has so many tools. At times I didnt actually think he used it that well - particularly when not under pressure but was rapt with how he won the footy, backed himself and ran. He is a good user and was good for a lot of today but I reckon he is better than that. Maybe was the wet.

Gault - never in the game. No influence. Surprised stayed on.

Oxley - Was ok early but occasion seemed to have him done. Still was surprised he went off instead of Gault. Didn't look happy post game

Dwyer - Came on as the sub about 10 out from 3/4 time and immediately gave us some run. He got the pace of the game quickly and he used his leg speed and decision making. Didn't always get a stat for some of the work he did. Making it hard for them to drop him back I reckon.

Elliottt - Was good but wasn't great. He made some errors at times but he kicked his 2 goals so job done.

Grundy - I thought he was terrific. Made some shocking errors but he gives it everything and I thought he beat Bellchambers. He has had a massive month and probably needs a rest but credit to the kid he is flying. His ability to get back and forward is a strength and to get himself as a link in the chain gives us another mid. Like any young kid his decision making can be a bit off but his trajectory is terrific.

Goldsack - Look I called for this bloke to go back after Crows game and so pleased he has. We look so much calmer and stronger. I like him there bc he is experienced enough to get off and intercept or get to a contest and influence it. He had some problems with his kick outs in the 2nd but wasn't all his fault. Leave him back for mine.

Langdon - I have to say that was probably the worst game I have seen him play. It wasn't a shocker so says as much about the standard he has set himself than anything else but he made a lot of errors out there today. He is such a talent you wouldn't worry about it. Dont get me wrong did some good things but he has some shockers.

White - Not a day for the big blokes. When he got it he was good but he just didn't get it enough.

Pendles - Was just ok for 3/4 's by his standards and Heppell had beaten him but he just imposed himself in that last quarter and was truly exceptional. Really an amazing skill to do that sort of thing. Lovely goal in first two. Doesn't always kick them so was good to see.

Blair - He was ok. Applied a lot of pressure and won a lot of contested possessions. He is crumbing more and Im happy with that as opposed to him trying to fly for marks all the time. He has a few breathing down his neck but he is holding them out. Didn't get a goal and small forward should be but still ok

You love he always has a Crack. Just needs to work on making Smart Descions with the Ball.

So it’s Possible we could Rest Grundy next week and let Witts take Wood.

Grundy’s upside is huge

Just needs to get more then 10 Touches a game as when he gets it. He uses not normally well

Crisp give us another Tall Mid to go along with Pendles. Crisp Strength is great.

Crisp would be 1 of the Best at Brisbane in this Form

Agree - The fist in the Last QTR when Backing Back was Great to see.

IF he can Fix his Kicking he can be a Elite Player in the AFL

Adams is coming along very nicely. Had he kicked those two goals, he may well have won the medal.

Crisp has also far exceeded my expectations (admittedly I'd never seen him play until this year though:p)

Everyone played their role and contributed bar White and Gault, who gave us nothing. Witts should come in to replace Gault next week.

Gault was not good. Looked star struck/ deer in the headlights.
Oxley I thought had a real crack. Not sure if I saw something else to him today than you?
Jesse White is a big useless lump of.... Absolute pea heart sometimes, and sometimes looks fearless, such a juxtaposition. I really am on the fence with him.
Loved frost. And Williams. Brilliant defence. Really solid team performance. But even with the weather issue, it seems another week of questionable forward entries sometimes.

I though Pendles had Heppell well beat the whole game, especially considering he also had Melksham going to him. Heppel was playing an uncontested game as they strangely seemed to be playing possesion footy in those conditions.

Pendles my 2nd best on ground.

The team is exceeding expectations. At the start of the season who would have thought that success would be riding on the backs of Crisp, Langdon, Ramsay, Frost and Seedsman? Just to mention a few of the new boys. Player development appears more advanced than we anticipated.

We still have injured players to return or debut with the side. Scharenburg, Moore and Freeman at some stage should add class to the team. Buckley's coaching appears to be working - there's a game plan and the boys seem eager to play for him.

Suddenly we look to be better than a bottom 8 side. I find I am typing with a spring in my finger. There is joy in the air amid a renewed belief in the direction of our mighty club. I feel I can look life in the eye and be assured that I have its measure. :)

I want to see Witts forward in vfl a bit today and then I'd play them both

I can't recollect exactly but I think oxley was on Stanton who got a lot of it. Look it could have been planned to. Oxley cramped up vs lions so they be managing him.

I often talk about that game. Crameri came into the game with really good form and Brown kept him to zero kicks and (I think) one handball.

Yeah I probably didn't see it that way. I thought Heppell had him for 3/4s and then as Bucks said in PC they swung Crisp to Heppell in last to quell him. I thought a great move and then they dropped
Pendles back.

I feel dirty even talking about Pendles like this!

Great post.

I still think we will miss 8 but I'm really excited by the fact we've given terrific effort in each game, we have young players improving and a lot of kids doing well in vfl and senior players due back in 2nd half.

What we absolutely have to improve is our ball use coming into the forwards. I was a forward and it makes me cry what our blokes have to deal.

I like that we won without pendles and swan having amazing games. Other blokes stepped up :)

yeah absolutely right. If you had told me at start of game neither of them would have a big impact I would have said Essendon by how much. I was delighted. To see Crisp, Adams, Frost, Brown, Goldsack and Seedsman be the best 6 and win comfortably I'm thrilled. I reckon some of Buckley's critics would be to. He will be measured on the improvement of the kids this year and so he should in this phase.

Grundy only makes poor decisions when fatigued. He needs 1 more pre-season (which will be his 3rd, given he back stress fractures in 1st year) which will give him about the right fitness base for his role.

I think that is probably generous. the handball in the middle wasn't fatigue it was just dumb but to be fair I'm not sure that whoever was the intended receiver didn't call for it either. he has been mighty thought the 'Big G'. I watched him a lot as a junior and he was exceptional. Lot of people said would struggle at AFL level as didn't have the leap but I thought his mobility, ground ball contribution, aggression and ability to drift forward would get him there. He still has to work on the tap outs but he was very good vs Bellchambers at boundary throw ins. I'll watch replay with interest but I thought he beat him in that facet.

Congrats Seedsman!
Also liked Crisp, Frost, Brown games amongst others & that Cloke kicked straight from 45 and from 20m.

Didn't like Blair's effort in the first minute of the 3rd quarter - should have nailed that goal as opposed to not even scoring (behind was rushed from 5+m out)
Langdon - why kick it straight to Heppell when under no pressure (TL kicking from a mark) & Heppell pretty much on his own!
Adams - two easy shots on goal and missed both
Grundy - there was one instance he kicked it out of defensive 50 straight to Danniher and I think he stuffed up at least one other passage of play (possibly just before 3 qtr time as I remember commentators saying Grundy might prefer to stay out on the ground).
(Generally happy with each of these 3 youngsters but it's these little to medium things they need to improve on to go to an even higher level.)

I like Cloke going up the ground to help us have targets out of defence but don't like when his kick is seemingly to Blair and is easily chopped off by Hooker who hasn't followed Cloke down the ground. Where were Gault and White? If Cloke down the ground then need these two presenting or Cloke getting the ball a bit closer to goal (50-70 out) so his opponent has to stay with him.

Couldn't believe the umps pinged Brown for deliberate out when he'd kicked it 40+m along boundary and ball bounced out at about 45 degrees - this seemed to be what started Ess run in the 2nd. Very lucky they didn't capitalise (kicked about 2.5)

Disappointed with Gault's game but still wouldn't mind seeming him develop with more games - next week against Carlton should be easier than Bombers who could cover 3 talls.

They were both short options but he just wheeled around and kick it to Blair thats when Hooker cut the ball off
