Review Player Review vs Port

De Goey was nowhere near as good as he's painted out to be most likely due to the fact his first appearance on the ground coincided with our fightback. One or two scrappy clearances to no one and an opportunistic soccer of the ground aside he was a turnover machine personified. Slightly to a lesser extent than Moore but he is being played to justify his high selection right now. Sick of repeating myself over the last 3 years but the sooner we get rid of Blair the better. Absolutely putrid over the last two seasons and his better looking games in 2015 are simply the case of right place right time.
He just lacks composure which is a concern for a highly touted junior, dont see Brayshaw making the errors De Goey does at this stage.

Hope it all comes to him with a bit more experience

Hine said De Goey was bit behind the other Top Picks but he expects him to catch up and even go pass Brayshaw and Petrecca

Alan Toovey
Poor, poor game. How often was Wingard left with all the space in the world? I counted that first half stoppage in their F50 when Wingard hit the post, when Toovey got sucked in to be tackle the ball-carrier and the ball went straight over his head to the lone Wingard, when Broomhead overran it and Port kicked it to Wingard in space, when he got forward of play and scored from the goal square, and there's probably more. Cannot put more efforts like that, especially for a player that offers nothing offensively.

I think that has to do more with the gameplan than Toovey. Backline players are instructed to leave their man to impact the contest but I don't think it suits him. We have to either drop Toovey for a player that will suit the gameplan better or Tweak it so Toovey is allowed to stay tight on small forwards.

Not sure why so many are down on Langdon this year, he makes the odd mistake but he's playing very well for a second year player.

The most infuriating thing is he actually tries to think before he acts, he is exactly the kind of player we have been crying out for. Is like heater, good for one clanger and 8 or 9 great kicks. Hopefully with time he will cut out the clangers, but can't understand how you could criticise his game at all.
Have a feeling if his name was scharenberg and he was drafted at 6, there would be nil criticism.

Langdon played some poor games earlier this year and seemed slow to me, but now I think he's gotten back into some form and making better decisions.

I'm not a hater of Langdon. But he's set the bar pretty high in terms of my expectations of him. So I'm more of a harsh critic. He was far from outstanding last night and he's way too hit and miss with his disposal to be taking kick-ins. His defensive work has definitely improved though and maybe I did overlook some of his efforts in this department.

You also missed he had 126 supercoach points from 23 touches. Could hardly have burnt the ball too much to get a score like that.

Finally managed to catch the replay. I think we simply lost the game in the first quarter. We couldn't match it with their run and we couldn't get our hands on the ball. At the end of the first they had more than double our I50s, and the time in forward half count was 70/30 their way. We were just smashed in the middle. An extra runner would have been helpful there and helpful from mid-way through the third when it started pouring rain which made already bad conditions for talls even worse. I also didn't like the fact that Pendles spent so much time forward in the 3rd, particularly when our midfield is so prone to getting overpowered and one of the main things we needed to fix was our delivery I50 and no one better than Pendles in our team in that regard.

We missed Marley massively, he makes us a tougher and better team both in the back defensively and in transition plays, the only players who could have played his role (Ramsay and Sinclair) were not available for the game so we had to have a bit of a make shift set up in defence.

It's not all negative though. We settled down and outscored them by 4 goals from quarter time onwards, and had the opportunities to win it at the end. That's three games in a row now where it could have easily gone our way. Outside of the Geelong game we never get completely put out of reach on the scoreboard, which shows our game plan holds up and our player's efforts are good. Also the youngsters are showing good signs (De Goey, Maynard and even Moore for the youngest ones).

--- Our best players
:

Adams - Massive numbers for a guy who only spent 74% time on the ground, drove the ball forward a lot and got a goal and a goal assist. Pretty complete game and conditions suited him, as in the wet his dodgy kicks won't stand out as much.

Sidebottom - Mostly belongs to this bracket because of how he stood up when it's started to rain heavily. He was smart and clean with the ball and a big reason we were kept in the game and within reach. It wasn't a perfect showing though, two of his turnovers in the back due to miskicks indirectly resulted in Port goals, in such a tight game that matters a lot.

Varcoe - Was always in favour of the trade so I'm happy to see it working so well. He adds footy smarts, creativity and skills to a team that needs it, but still fits well in our pressure game by putting really strong tackling numbers like he did on Thursday with 7 and a couple of bumps.

Langdon - Very good game and good to see him put two good performances in a row. Our best mark in the back, our most involved in the contest in the back as well. I think he benefited a bit from playing Marley's loose role at times. Similar to last week, the only issue is his disposal by foot deep in defence, kick ins aren't his forte unfortunately.

--- Players who held their own:

Pendlebury - Good without being great. Always composed, and very important first goal. Being sent forward didn't help though as nothing was coming his way. Shame his kick hit the post in the last as it could have been the match winning goal.

Crisp - A nice well rounded performance with 22d, 8 tackles and a goal. Was pretty good in the contest and kicking always a weapon for us.

Swan - A typical 2015 Dane Swan performance, productive, influential without being dominant.

Witts - Liked his game, good in the ruck and threatening forward. He got a good goal and was unlucky to have a legitimate mark I50 taken from him by the umpire as well as a contest in the goal square where he could have got a free himself and an easy second goal. He does get pushed off the ball too easily though, needs to work on his awareness around the ground.

Grundy - Good game back, did some really nice little things in traffic and held his own in the ruck and as always provided good second efforts and tackling. Not threatening forward though.

De Goey - Very good return numbers wise for someone who played only half the game, particularly the 7 clearances, 5 I50s, 1 goal and 1 goal assist. However he rushed his I50s and ruined a few opportunities for us with his missed kicks. Needs to work on his disposal by foot, but seeing his kicking technique and watching him in the 2s at the start of the year I'm pretty confident he'll get there.

White - Don't think he's to blame for an underwhelming forward line performance . In a very tough game for talls, he tried to have an impact and took the most mark out of our forwards with 6 and kicked a goal and his behind wasn't that bad. Did a few good things further from goals as well.

Fasolo - Very good intensity but he was a bit untidy with his disposal, shame he missed his snap again like last week.

Maynard - Good ball use especially for a second gamer. Very happy with what he's showing. His defensive positioning is a bit lacking, like against the Hawks but I'd rather him needing to improve that area of his game rather than the decision making/kicking.

Moore - Read a few harsh comments on his performance. I don't like that he played in defence, and at times his misread the game, but while that stat is a bit dodgy he got 9 one-percenters and impacted some contest positively when going for the spoil or the tackle. That being said, I'd rather him being sent to the VFL to develop his forward game, he's got such a dangerous mix of attributes it would be a shame not to try to develop him as a forward threat.

Toovey - Comments are too harsh for mine. He had a good first half. He did allow too much space to the opposition at times, but we had a dysfunctional structure so I can understand him trying to leave his man at times. Not saying he was great but I think he deserves his chance against an opponent he know well in Darling.

Brown and Frost - Little to report in a tough night for talls, nothing particularly great outside of Frost strong efforts to run around opponents, but no big negatives either.

--- The disappointing performances:

Cloke - In comparison to White, he didn't manage to impact the game outside of a short patch towards the end. Just out of the game for so long and he's the #1 forward so I'd expect more from him despite the conditions.

Elliott - Inflated numbers due to him spending time on the ball to get into the game. Just another disappointing showing, dropped a number of marks, and made the wrong decisions at times.

Oxley - Not involved enough, not in the middle and not even when he was sent in the back to play loose (because he was).

Blair - Probably his worst game of the year, as even when he's a bit quiet he's been getting the set shots he missed on Thursday.

Won't assess Broomhead as he spent less than 50% time on the ground, and the first incident with his shoulder was mid-way through the first anyway. When he was there he was OK, and used it cleanly.

-- A few notes on form overall:

Trending up:

*Adams is on four top 3 on the ground (for us) performances in a row. Really hope Greenwood comes in and plays well as we'll miss his strength at the contest.

*Sidebottom is building his form back, disappointing against Freo, good against hawthorn, very good this week, hopefully he keeps building to his best.

Trending down:

*Elliott is now on three disappointing game in a row. He's too dangerous to drop though and we have no one to replace him, so we'll need to find another way to motivate him to get back into from.

*Oxley is also on three disappointing game in a row, and for me deserves to be dropped, for his sake and ours, as he wouldn't really have taken much out of the last three games and we have options that can come in if he goes (Seeds, Scharenberg if we reshuffle the backline, Kennedy if we send Crisp to a wing).

The Rucks are Still Quite Young so you think More they Play. There Better they will get:thumbsu:
The tap itself isn't the issue. It's our mids getting sucked into the contest and when the ball spills out we've got no one on the outskirts.

Happened all the time against hawthorn and again on Thursday night. Enabled hawks and power time and space to get the ball into their forward fifty.

(I'm talking centre square bounces here).

When we do manage to get a good tap and shark, we stuff it by a stupid handball or it gets smothered. Adams the chief culprit.

That's where they killed us last night.
Their spread was so good last night that it allowed a spare runner outside the contest at nearly ever stoppage.
Particularly in the 1st quarter.

Thought Adams was quite good with that on Thursday Especially late in the Game. Guess him getting it more also makes it stick out more

I initially read this and thought that this post was one of that guy that constantly takes the piss.

Then I realised you were serious.

So you're having a go at two first year players who have played less than 10 games collectively between them and Blair, who is in career best form and whose forward pressure is immense?

Kudos. I'm glad that we weren't able to get up over the last few weeks as it's given posters such as yourself a chance to come out of the woodwork. Hopefully we lose the next one, so you can come on here again and (enjoy) pointing out how we could all be better people.

Drink.
I have a few suggestions on how we can be better people but none of them apply to you.

I 100% agree about Jessica White

Calling White a girls name is very insulting TD. If Moore had had as good a game as White half the board would be toast threads from you celebrating the performance. Your comment is below the belt and poor form mate.
