Well that sucked. Didn't really deserve to get done by 7 goals in the end and the margin really doesn't reflect how competitive we were. There were some glaring problems though. We got routinely torched out of the middle and while the back 6 stood tall for all of about 114 minutes, the dam was always gonna burst. We're not quite there yet but with a few handy ins, we'll be ok. Also looked like a really good team at times but now it's about bouncing back against the Lions next week. Let's get to it:

2. Airhead Jordan

Yep. He got a nickname change for today. Quite a shit display by him today. Nice goal he kicked but only 9 touches and really minimal impact. To be fair, he probably needed a bit more midfield time considering how badly the group was getting exposed there but he really needs to come back stronger next game.

4. El Grundog

Nice looking stat sheet for him but wasn't the best game. He was outplayed by Nankervis and this is probably the first time he's been beaten by his matchup all season. Dominated the hitouts but his midfielders couldn't take full (or any) advantage of it.

7. Ads Treloar

Backed up his ANZAC medal performance with another great one. Nice running goal in the last quarter and worked hard all day. Had 42 touches at 82% with 0 clangers. I'll take that.

9. Zippy

Probably his worst game of the year so far. Can say the same for a few of the youngsters. Since the rising star nomination, his running game has been largely shut down. Also got exposed once or twice defensively.

10. Pendles

Was good without being great. Finally hit the scoreboard this year nailing our first major of the day and had 29 at 82%. Delivered some quality passes inside 50 and looked seriously classy at times.

11. Weeman

One of the more maligned inclusions but he did his job. Not much to shout home about but I'd drop him for Varcoe next week. (We know thats not gonna happen)

12. Scharenberg

Was good. It was tough for him and the rest of the back 6 with the constant barrage that was coming in especially in the second quarter but he showed some great poise and aerial help defence.

14. Aisho (going somewhere - the sidelines for a few weeks)

**** **** **** **** ****. Every time he gets going, something goes wrong. I thought he was important in the first half before that unfortunate injury. Dude just can't catch a break.

15. I'm just about Dunn with your shit

Frustrating game from him. Along with Howe, held the back 6 together pretty well for most of the day but gave away that stupid stupid STUPID free kick to Higgins. Also let Riewoldt off the leash a few times for 3 goals.

16. Mayne

Yeah that's right Chris. You don't even get a fancy nickname.

He's just not up to it. Stupid inclusion and a stupid signing. Not entirely his fault that he was put in a position to fail. (For real though, this dude never missed for like two years. Now he can't kick one from 30 out straight in front. The **** is up with that?)

17. Rowdy Junior #1

Looked like a dear in the headlights at times today. Probably needs a spell in the magoos but he'll be better for the run.

20. Reidyboi

Seriously mixed bag for him today. Kicked 2 goals so he did his job statistically but that one turnover in the third quarter where he decided to try and snap a goal from 55 out was just so ****ing stupid. It led directly to a goal at the other end. Heard he's been injured which sucks but at least now if forces us to either blood McLarty or play Moore forward.

21. Flippa

Thought he had a really good day today. Had the fumbles at times but 38 touches is a great indication of his work rate. I feel he's judged a bit too harshly on here. There's nothing glaringly bad about his game in my opinion.

22. Sidearse

Came back down to Earth a bit today after three awesome weeks. Nowhere near as impactful and failed to hit the scoreboard. Was way too cute at times too. That really stupid dribble kick in the second quarter was a prime example. Won't be leading the coaches votes after this round, that's for sure.

24. Jaytee

Another one who had a downer compared to previous weeks. Really not much to say about his game other than "meh".

25. Crispy

He continues to be a solid backman. Uses the ball pretty well and had a beautiful pass to WHE in the first half that lead to a goal. I might be playing favourites a little but he's one of my favourite players in the team.

31. Appelboi

Encouraging debut. Did some nice things defensively and didn't look out of place at all. Higgins got loose from him once which led to a double thanks to Dunn's brainfade but overall, didn't make any real defensive mistakes.

32. WHE

Good first half but really disappeared in the second half. Granted, it would've been difficult to be a forward against the spider web that was Richmond's back line compounded by the complete drop off in the quality of delivery so can't fault him too much.

35. Jet

Another who came back down to Earth and like Brown, will probably benefit from a spell in the Magoos soon with some more experienced guys coming back.

37. Bruzzy Bray

Really didn't mind his game. Was tough as nails in contested situations and his ball use is pretty sweet going the other way. Probably one of the more adept opposite foot kickers in the team as well.

38. Howe did he do that?

Gun. Had an All-Australian afternoon today and was the gooey sticky stuff that kept the backline together for so long. Don't think it was a coincidence that we gave up those 4 late goals when he was shifter forward.

46. Big Cox

Looked every bit like the monster forward we needed in the first half but disappointingly faded away. That's the next challenge for him now. He fades in and out of games too much for my liking.

So as for changes, we'll need a few.

In: Adams, McClarty, Fasolo, Varcoe, Langdon
Out: Brown, Reid (if hurt), Mayne, Aish, Maynard (if hurt)

Anyways, hope you enjoyed another one of me writeups for the week. A bit shittier mood in this one because we lost but I'm confident we'll get a nice response next week.

Thought Reid was poor today. He should have been rested.

Mayne and Blair were terrible. Maynard's disposal continues to absolutely hurt us. Murray for the last couple of weeks looks like he only runs when attacking. Doesn't seem to run defensively much which is bizarre for a defender.

Really liked Appleby's game on debut under such heat in that backline.

Pathetic selections.

I don't blame players like Mayne and Blair.
They live in hope that they are good enough for AFL, as they should.

We will never beat a decent team with both Mayne and Blair in the team.

Appalling decisions by the match selection committee.

It's like they got players pinned up on a dart board and blind fold throw darts at the board for which players come in.

Horses for courses, like for like, that is a ******ed way of choosing a team.

You choose a team based on performance, did Varcoe need to be managed? Did Langdon? Crocker?

If they are in the same condition as the other 19 that were playing 4 days earlier, why leave out those particular players?
Especially Varcoe, without a player like him or Elliott in our forward half, we can't score a winning total against a good team.

I was so confident that team wouldn't win I confidently bet $100 for a Richmond win.

Pathetic pathetic pathetic, nothings changed, ******s making selections.

Agree 100% , varcoe would have shone in a game like today . We aren't as bad as the margin suggests

Murray does run back hard to defend, chase an opponent. No doubt about that. I haven’t seen him put in an Adam Saad effort when he was chasing treloar last week.

Agree with Reid and Maynard. Reid was very poor.

De Goey was very very disappointing today.
Howe, Pendles, Treloar, Crisp and Phillips were about the only good 4 qtr contributors. Shaz was good but like last week faded out in the second half. Grundy and Maynard did well to keep playing through their injuries. Dunn did some stupid things that really annoyed me. Apart from the free kicks and goals against he threw the ball into Applby's face after Applyby won a free. It wasn;t malicious but was just stupid careless little thing you don't want from your senior teammate. I wrote about how I like Dunn's "cantankerous nature" last week.. this week ... not so much.

Did you seriously write that Maynards ball use the other way was good?

Howe needs to improve his disposal to get better. There were a few short kicks and handballs last week and today that cost us dearly.

DeGoey short on match fitness and struggled across the ground for mine.

Not really sure what Mayne’s role was. Just seem to float without direction or purpose. Always seemed to be on the opposite side of the ground to the action and yet he would still put his hand up calling for the ball 100m away. Needs to earn his pay packet for mine.

Don’t get me started on Blair. Did nothing. Not sure he tackled much effectively either. He had one good chance on the wing in the last, ball in hand, 5m in the clear, facing the goal and what does he do. Turns away runs 10m baulking himself went the wrong way round the roundabout and allowed the defenders to man up.

Crisp was one of our best today, very good in the first half in particular.

Cox backed up which was good. Struggles with long kicks at goal so he needs to work on long set shots now.

Thought Howe then Aish going down was a real turning point. We really seemed to lose stability and momentum at that point. Really hope it’s a quick recovery for Aish because he’s really starting to improve. Hopefully it’s not a long break like last year with the jaw.

Schazz is really looking comfortable now, what is it only 20 games I think? I haven't given up on him rotating through the centre when his tank develops in the next year or two. Excellent vision, skill, absolute class. Looked knackered at the end of the game.

I thought young Appleby was fantastic today, I expect him to remain in the side. Assuming Langdon returns, Maynard might see midfield/forward time.

I didn't see much of the fourth quarter but I thought young Brown was a lot cleaner today. Excellent vision and ability to keep the ball moving forward.

Pendles is a gun.

Treloar very good.

De Goey/Dunn were poor.

Blair/Mayne meh.

Thought Phillips was shocking. Basic skill execution was inexcusable. No point winning the ball if you’re gonna turn it over. Needs to fix it up quick.

Treloar and Shaz our best for mine by quite a margin. Disappointed with JT and De Goey.

I noticed that about Howes kicking and hand balling. Mostly in the last quarter though. I put it down to him being knackered. He'd put in a massive effort up til then. Maybe me being naive but that was my read of it.

I didn't mind Phillips field kicking today or decision making. His efforts at full tilt to gather hand balls below his knees also excellent. He did get corralled a bit in close which pressured him into errant hand balls though. It was a hot contest. I thought he had an excellent game mostly. One of his better ones.

Scharenberg :)

Reminds me of Clement. Same size, movement and reading of the play. He just doesnt quite have the same kicking penetration and creativity. His kicking has gotten much more positive overall though. Really exciting times for our side with Shaz up and about.

I would have to agree Phillips gets a lot of the pill but butchers it a lot too. Particularly by hand when in traffic. Can hit targets if opposition teams afford him space. Still young, plenty time to rectify deficiencies.

What an epic game from Treloar. He generated so much forward momentum for us. Has that spatial awareness and then just blitzes it when he sees the space open up. Reckon he was the single most important factor in our periods of positive ball movement.

I reckon Phillips has a lot of development left in him. He has improved his field kicking, decision making, ball handling below his knees and defensive running in transition. Gotta agree hand balling under pressure needs improvement. But he's shown he can improve so im hopeful.
