Good question. My crude understanding is the first disposal out of the stoppage area. Admittedly this means that one team can be credited with a clearance even if it's a handball which goes straight to the opposition...which might explain why Brisbane were able to beat Richmond in the clearances a few weeks ago!

I'd welcome a more scientific definition of the term if anyone can find it.
I agree with that and I'd forgotten about Greenwood. Before yesterday, playing a midfield with the attributes that you look for had been working beautifully. We've gone with our clever skilful guys. They'd done well in the contest, but significantly when they had won them, they've been able to link up by hand and give us some exciting run from the contest. Yesterday left me concerned about their ability to compete against a really physically strong midfield. We really need Degoey or maybe Sier to come on quickly and give us a better combination of strength, aggression, whilst not losing too much skill or composure. Or Adams to magically discover composure. Wills and Greenwood may give us a better contest, but it will come at an attacking cost.

Ideally though, maybe it was just an aberration due to flatness from the short break

It might well have been an aberration, and a couple of our stronger clearance players of recent weeks (Sidebottom, and to a lesser extent Thomas) have been down in the last two games in that aspect of the game.

Clearance numbers can, I know, be overrated. If Brisbane could beat Richmond in the clearances and yet lose the game so comprehensively, then our mids need to do a lot more than get first possession (*). Still, we should be aiming to get closer to out clearance numbers against Adelaide, where our spread from congestion was so damaging.

Adams and JDG have a part to play, for sure. I don't mind JDG in the forward line, but there's no doubt his strength would also be handy through the middle. Sier is another part of the equation, in my opinion. I don't know how quickly he can find his feet, but I am more optimistic about his prospects than Wills.

I admit that I'd be disappointed if Greenwood gets games ahead of Sier. I know he's strong, that he's a workhorse, and I know that he has a knack of hitting the scoreboard...but others should be given a chance before him.

(*) It can also be noted that we won both centre clearances and stoppages against Hawthorn, which is the only time this year we've done that!

Couple of points

1 whys it so hard for the 4 teams who played Anzac day games to get the bye brought forward seems to be ok for the BIG chinese game, the difference is

2 if that's the best Richmond have and there the benchmark ,we're in it up to our ears

3 so many guys were way way down on exposed form and still we stayed in a game that easily was the most intense all year with is it 7 guys out

CHANGES NEXT WEEK

Outs
De goey , Thomas , aish , Reid brown Blair stepho
Ins
2 new players
Mcclarty and seir
Adams , Langdon varcoe fasolo daicos

Moore wells and Elliott can come back next week

Wanta see seir have a crack against the lions
Will suprise
Sounds like a reasonable amount of ins and outs*

*read..unreasonable

Unreasonable if I had have added mayne and Howe which would have been 9

Look as we know ,2 are a definate

Looked to me that Thomas, jdg , Stephenson , brown all could do with a spell looked like they were running on sand

Langdon , Adams varcoe and I'd suggest mcclarty are walk up starts

Don't play seir this week then when? We need him or wills against geelong and it would be good to wean him in IMO

What role was that yesterday?

I don't always mind if the stats don't show how well a player played, but I do mind when I see a player not chase, shepherd, protect the ball, run to give other players an option.
I might have to watch the game again but I don't notice any of that from his game. He had a few nice touches and made a few tackles and a few nice bursts from the stoppages, he's not going to rack up big numbers and kick allot of goals every game.

Looked like he was more Playing On-Ball then Forward where he been playing Well

A bit rough
Not really. There wasn’t a player I cursed more during the day, I actually noticed how poorly he was playing because my girlfriend (who wasn’t watching the game) actually made a comment like “Poor Phillips is popular with you today” after an error.

Can’t believe the praise he seems to be getting from all except mike123 , I think mike is the one that’s on the money about his game.

That said, can’t fault his work ethic but there were quite a few occasions, particularly in the third and fourth where we need him to be clean and he wasn’t, leading us to getting hurt the other way.

Phillips is good because 8 times out of 10 he's the link up player to get the switch from out of the backline through midfield to the forward line. And if you watch him, he'll be almost every time on the other side of the ground and his work rate to get to the other and be that link player is what makes his game. Not too many can do that for 4 qtrs.

I’ll pay more attention to this next week but if so it’s a good role for him to have with his endurance. Also something easier to pick up live than on TV

Hey man, I've been hammering Tom as well, and jackcass has been harsher than all of us combined!

He is very much a link. He's serviceable at the moment, and hopefully he continues to improve his game.

I watch him a lot because I'm that sort of player with fitness (obviously not AFL elite) he is with running and endurance. He's still learning and will only get better.

Thought Phillips kicking was actually pretty good. He absolutely butchered a few handballs though.
I think a lot of his disposal errors/weak efforts at the contest come from being exhausted from making it to contests that he actually shouldn't be getting to. When he does get held up and has to settle and kick over the mark, he generally hits a target. So I don't think his disposal is a fatal flaw by any means.

He still has plenty of improvement to do, but the calls to drop him were ridiculous.

Well that sucked. Didn't really deserve to get done by 7 goals in the end and the margin really doesn't reflect how competitive we were. There were some glaring problems though. We got routinely torched out of the middle and while the back 6 stood tall for all of about 114 minutes, the dam was always gonna burst. We're not quite there yet but with a few handy ins, we'll be ok. Also looked like a really good team at times but now it's about bouncing back against the Lions next week. Let's get to it:

2. Airhead Jordan

Yep. He got a nickname change for today. Quite a shit display by him today. Nice goal he kicked but only 9 touches and really minimal impact. To be fair, he probably needed a bit more midfield time considering how badly the group was getting exposed there but he really needs to come back stronger next game.

4. El Grundog

Nice looking stat sheet for him but wasn't the best game. He was outplayed by Nankervis and this is probably the first time he's been beaten by his matchup all season. Dominated the hitouts but his midfielders couldn't take full (or any) advantage of it.

7. Ads Treloar

Backed up his ANZAC medal performance with another great one. Nice running goal in the last quarter and worked hard all day. Had 42 touches at 82% with 0 clangers. I'll take that.

9. Zippy

Probably his worst game of the year so far. Can say the same for a few of the youngsters. Since the rising star nomination, his running game has been largely shut down. Also got exposed once or twice defensively.

10. Pendles

Was good without being great. Finally hit the scoreboard this year nailing our first major of the day and had 29 at 82%. Delivered some quality passes inside 50 and looked seriously classy at times.

11. Weeman

One of the more maligned inclusions but he did his job. Not much to shout home about but I'd drop him for Varcoe next week. (We know thats not gonna happen)

12. Scharenberg

Was good. It was tough for him and the rest of the back 6 with the constant barrage that was coming in especially in the second quarter but he showed some great poise and aerial help defence.

14. Aisho (going somewhere - the sidelines for a few weeks)

**** **** **** **** ****. Every time he gets going, something goes wrong. I thought he was important in the first half before that unfortunate injury. Dude just can't catch a break.

15. I'm just about Dunn with your shit

Frustrating game from him. Along with Howe, held the back 6 together pretty well for most of the day but gave away that stupid stupid STUPID free kick to Higgins. Also let Riewoldt off the leash a few times for 3 goals.

16. Mayne

Yeah that's right Chris. You don't even get a fancy nickname.

He's just not up to it. Stupid inclusion and a stupid signing. Not entirely his fault that he was put in a position to fail. (For real though, this dude never missed for like two years. Now he can't kick one from 30 out straight in front. The **** is up with that?)

17. Rowdy Junior #1

Looked like a dear in the headlights at times today. Probably needs a spell in the magoos but he'll be better for the run.

20. Reidyboi

Seriously mixed bag for him today. Kicked 2 goals so he did his job statistically but that one turnover in the third quarter where he decided to try and snap a goal from 55 out was just so ******* stupid. It led directly to a goal at the other end. Heard he's been injured which sucks but at least now if forces us to either blood McLarty or play Moore forward.

21. Flippa

Thought he had a really good day today. Had the fumbles at times but 38 touches is a great indication of his work rate. I feel he's judged a bit too harshly on here. There's nothing glaringly bad about his game in my opinion.

22. Sidearse

Came back down to Earth a bit today after three awesome weeks. Nowhere near as impactful and failed to hit the scoreboard. Was way too cute at times too. That really stupid dribble kick in the second quarter was a prime example. Won't be leading the coaches votes after this round, that's for sure.

24. Jaytee

Another one who had a downer compared to previous weeks. Really not much to say about his game other than "meh".

25. Crispy

He continues to be a solid backman. Uses the ball pretty well and had a beautiful pass to WHE in the first half that lead to a goal. I might be playing favourites a little but he's one of my favourite players in the team.

31. Appelboi

Encouraging debut. Did some nice things defensively and didn't look out of place at all. Higgins got loose from him once which led to a double thanks to Dunn's brainfade but overall, didn't make any real defensive mistakes.

32. WHE

Good first half but really disappeared in the second half. Granted, it would've been difficult to be a forward against the spider web that was Richmond's back line compounded by the complete drop off in the quality of delivery so can't fault him too much.

35. Jet

Another who came back down to Earth and like Brown, will probably benefit from a spell in the Magoos soon with some more experienced guys coming back.

37. Bruzzy Bray

Really didn't mind his game. Was tough as nails in contested situations and his ball use is pretty sweet going the other way. Probably one of the more adept opposite foot kickers in the team as well.

38. Howe did he do that?

Gun. Had an All-Australian afternoon today and was the gooey sticky stuff that kept the backline together for so long. Don't think it was a coincidence that we gave up those 4 late goals when he was shifter forward.

46. Big Cox

Looked every bit like the monster forward we needed in the first half but disappointingly faded away. That's the next challenge for him now. He fades in and out of games too much for my liking.

So as for changes, we'll need a few.

In: Adams, McClarty, Fasolo, Varcoe, Langdon
Out: Brown, Reid (if hurt), Mayne, Aish, Maynard (if hurt)

Anyways, hope you enjoyed another one of me writeups for the week. A bit shittier mood in this one because we lost but I'm confident we'll get a nice response next week.

I don't even know who half those names are but I assume you got it about right

I thought I'd been measured....

I came on here to say exactly the same thing!

For too long we watched Collingwood players being witches' hats, with no running, spreading or being there for each other.
Tom Phillips and others (Crisp, Treloar, etc) are all part of the new style and gameplan that we have been developing and enjoying late last year and this season.
Getting back to the good old days of Ben Johnson, Daisy and Swanny all making a good transition from back to forward line!
I really admire his running and determination!

I started watching him because last year I put $1 on him to win the 2017 Rising Star Award at 250 to 1.
He won a Rising Star nomination one week, and although I didn't win I felt I had a good run for my money.

I will be interested in your opinion, just in case I am being too harsh. Noticed it against the Bombers, wasn't thinking about lack of goals.

His best game was against Adelaide I think.

He works that hard for his teammates its ridiculous.

He was playing Injured so not a Big Surprise he did not Dominate against Nankervis

Occasionally takes too long to decipher

I think this is spot on, every time he picks up the ball first reaction is to look up and look around, needs to assess the situation prior to getting the ball, needs the Daicos touch

Have to admit though up until the 3 qtr he was ok.
