Thanks the mighty T good review.

Few points;

Grundy - his challenge is those stoppages and getting better at directing them to advantage. He will get exposed against elite ruckmen here and its probably Witts best asset. Grundy much better around ground, his 2nd efforts are fantastic and his agression has been balanced nicely.

Crisp - so happy to here you are a fan of Crisp. I copped a fair bit of flak when I suggested we include this kid in the Beams deal and whilst I dont think he will ever be a Rolls Royce I think he is that Jordan Lewis type who just goes all day and is hard as a cats head. Like Lewis I think he will do defensive jobs for a few years yet but I think he will develop into a player who can back himself to play offensive roles. He just needs time and to work on his kicking under pressure.

Broomhead - Good isnt he. Was at a lot of stoppages.

Oxley - Good to see his ball use back.

Ramsay - Probably best game seen him play but jury still out for me.

Williams - Note the coach thought his defensive game was v good and it was as his man had been pretty good vs Suns. Still not up to AFL standard from a kicking view.

Seedsman - coming along ok.

Goldsack - great to see him back and think should stay there until Reid abck and even then possibly stay. I wouldnt mind a back of Toovey, Brown, Frost, Langdon, Reid and Goldsack for a little longer.

Well, Witts is bit Older the Grundy and has been at Collingwood Longer so you think he would be better at a few things then Grundy at the Moment.

Wouldn’t Grundy’s Tap Work get better with more Experience?

Both will get better with experience Dave, but the conversation is about their current capabilities and how best to utilise them.

What he play 1 or 2 Rucks?

I think Grundy is the More Complete Ruckman out of the 2. Though I still think we can play Both as that give both time up forward so they can Improve in that Area. Taking Marks and Kicking Goals more Often

I'm hoping that we play both together sooner rather than later. Unlike many, I think that they will come to compliment each other really well. Witts will become the big brute who wears the opposition down. Grundy will become the mobile brute, who continues to wear the opposition down and also offers mobility. They're both very competitive at ground level and tackle well. They both will become dangerous in the air. After years of mediocrity in that area, it's going to be great to have a dominant duo.

Great points Snoop Dog and I will freely admit to being one of the many who was critical of picking up Crisp as the potential "blunt steak knives" of the set. What is most pleasing about his role at the moment is that he's finding a bit of the ball when we're lacking some senior experience through the middle. Add Greenwood, Sidebottom and Adams into the mix and all of a sudden young Crisp has a few more moments to work with. Exciting to think that our midfield in 2 years will probably consist of: Pendlebury (29), Sidebottom (26), Greenwood (28), Adams (24), Freeman (22), De Goey (21), Crisp (24), Broomhead (23).. All around the right age to be contending, with a good balance of pace, skill and brute strength. Add in a free agent at some point...

To be honest, I'm probably a little hard on the trio of Ramsay, Toovey and Williams, but I just felt that the skill level wasnt where I'd want it to be when things were hotly contested. These boys will likely find themselves overtaken by the likes of Maynard and a fit Scharenberg if they arent up to it.

They are both promising but both need to work on their contested marking in general play. It is a major weakness both of them and the team. Cloke is the only reliable contested marker we have. To become very good, Grundy and Witts we need to address this weakness.

It's something both have been focusing on over the preseason, and something Witts in particular was showing improvement in late last year. Watch the last game vs the Hawks again, he took a few great contested grabs :)

Yeah the mid group is exciting and I reckon we have a few dollars in the chest to add one to it. Also don't forget that unlikely Langdon, Oxley, Scharenberg will all play back as well and all have ability in middle particularly the latter.

I agree re the backs. Interesting Ransay DE at vfl level was good and was at u18 level as well so I could be convinced needs more time. Williams has had the time and I think will get passed quickly. Age will beat Toovey I suspect but he has to do better with his ball use for us to go places.

i reckon the back 6 will consist of Moore, Reid, Frost, Langdon, Oxley and Scharenberg albeit suspect there is a small quicker type in that group and Scharenberg or Langdon in the middle.

Decent run with injuries and 20 games into some kids and we will be v competitive.

Well Grundy vs the Lions took 7 Marks

Tonight was possibly the best and most complete game I've ever seen Swan play for Collingwood, and I've seen every one of them - 39 disposals, 7 clearances, 1 goal, 3 goals assists, 15 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 5 tackles, 4 1%ers
Back to his best.

Well Grundy vs the Lions took 7 Marks
Jesus Dave, stop turning every conversation into a Witts vs Grundy competition. We all want both of them to do well.

Not only that, but Grundy took no marks against the Lions, 3 vs Adelaide and 3 vs St Kilda. On current form he's not taking massive amounts of grabs, and he needs to work on it, as does Witts.

Dwyer is hard done by not in everyones top 5.
Have a look at 100v1's highlights of the game....Dwyer is in nearly every one of them.

To be fair it is quite hard to single out our top performers against the Saints.

You can make a case for Swan, Grundy, Elliott, Blair, Varcoe as MVP and then another bracket of great contributors would include Pendles, Crisp, Ramsay, Oxley.

If you look at our highlights from last year and the year before, you will see Dwyer heavily featuring in our goals. I would love to get his goal assists stats, and if he isn't involved in goal assists he is involved in the setup of our best transition moves. He's a smart player that's why, and footy smarts we definitely lack – Pendles, Langdon and Broomhead aside.

One swallow does not make a summer, but it is a start.

When I was growing up, ruckmen like Dempsey used to clunk a heap of strong grabs -seemingly every game. Admittedly, it was the era of ruckman playing a kick behind the play and every point being brought back into play with a long kick to the ruckman. But who was the most recent ruckman who was genuinely a consistent reliable contested mark. It seems to have fallen by the wayside as an expected skill for ruckmen. For the game's sake - I hope that Natanui lives up to the potential and becomes the contested marking freak that he has at times promised to be and I hope that our boys begin to clunk a few.

The best grab is McAvoy. If I were the Hawks I would be playing him out of the goal square as much as possible. But I think their coach might know what he is doing.

And the incredible thing about Nic Nat is that he is yet to take one single mark this year....believe it or not!

Great stat Kirby

Grundy would be leading the Copeland at this point (IMO)

Apart from the 2 -3 year window when Jolly was at his peak with us, our midfield have never been used to having a dominant ruckman. Adding a few set plays at ruck contests and Grundy continually tapping the ball first, the organic process of delivering Centre bounce dominance has begun.

I wouldn't be too concerned about how many taps are going to advantage at this stage... Just how many times he wins the taps

Not even close (IMO), well behind Pendles. Even Swanny and Sidey with BOG performances in single games wouldn't be too far of Grundy.

Really good to see Broomhead have a good game. We desperately need him to be a serious player given our list structure and skill set. We also need Seedsman to get it together like he looked like he would 2 years ago. Hopefully he stays in the side for a month and finds real confidence and form. If those 2 can be consistent midfielders/running players we can concentrate on other needs.

Who really impressed:

Grundy: Kid is a star. Got over his second year blues and is honestly the best young ruckman around. Taps are not all that ruckmen do these days. Around the ground and second efforts are top notch.

Broomhead: Ditto. Waiting for him to pull the finger out but injury and poor team selection which prevented a consistent run at it prevented this sort of performance. Keep him in even if he has a poor game this week. Match selection committee: Please don't be overreactionary! One Broomhead kick is worth 3 Goldsack kicks (and I love Goldsack).

Crisp: A bit of composure could really help him. Stepped up in the absence of Greenwood and Adams. For me, he has nearly been best on at various points of the games of Rounds 1 and 3.

Langdon: Clement-like. Has courage to take a mark and play that 3rd tall back role. I'm impressed.

Pendlebury: I hope our kids can push on (especially our higher draft picks) because he deserves better players around him, he is that good.

Swan: a renaissance of sorts, although "Boomer" Harvey and Robert Harvey plays/played like this well into their thirties.

Cloke: A talent and unfairly maligned, showed maturity to press on notwithstanding things not going his way (poor kicking and pathetic and biased umpiring).

Blair: Keep up your 2010/2011 form little guy, really impressive.

Elliott: Where have you been the last 15 games. Was worried his flair was being coached out of him.

Seedsman: slow start and needs composure with his kicking, however, takes the game on and can kick. Match selection committee: give him a good run.

Dwyer: Calmness and quick thinking around the contest. Stays in despite those calling for his head unreasonably.

I reckon that he's been poorly developed in terms of marking. He's got one trick - the hanger. Doesn't even attempt to body his man and use his height to outreach him.
