The start of a new era
AFL Club
Essendon
Davey - Played a reasonable game but seemed a little bit rusty to me and his disposal wasn't as spot on as usual. Worked hard as always and will improve with the game under his belt

Dempsey - Raw as hell but i really liked his game and as we got on top he really came into the game. He backs his judgment and today made some very good decisions and his disposal was very good.

Dyson - Very ordinary game and it was the same old Ricky as in previous years. Did do a couple of nice things but again, far to few and far between.

Fletcher - A bit rusty as has had a limited pre season but played quite well and provided a steady head. Looks like he is carrying an injury to me.

Hille - Really liked his game and he worked extremely hard. Did well in the tapwork, provided a dangerous option up forward and chased and harassed all game. Big thumbs up :thumbsu:

Houli - Had no confidence early and wasn't really in the game much. Needs to take some heat off some of his handballs, as they move to quick and result in turnovers. Like Dempsey, when we got on top, he really dominated and looked really good. Huge motor and really got into the game as others ran out of puff.

Jetta - Played well defensively and did a little bit in an offensive aspect also. Has a touch of class and is coming along slowly but surely.

Johnson - Worked his guts out as always and improved as the game progressed. Did some good grunt work and was a handy contributor.

Laycock - Disappointing. I've been singing his praises for years but he is starting to lose me. He has talent but he is lazy and in a team game that is not on.

Lloyd - Fantastic game from a fantastic captain who stood up when we really need him to. With Lucas going down we needed our leaders to stand up and that's exactly what they did, and none more so that Lloydy.
Played one half of footy the whole pre season, yet ran his guts out and put his body on the line, great game.

Lonergan - Really good game from Sam and it will also do him the world of good. Won some really good hard balls and although his disposal was 50/50 he won the ball well.

Lovett-Murray - Great game and has continued on from his great pre season form. Looks really good up forward and with his strong marking will become a very important player for us during Lucas' injury.

McPhee -I have been one of his biggest critics but today he stood up when needed. Another with a limited pre season. Marked strongly, no fumbling, put his body on the line and tried his guts out. Will benefit greatly from the game and will be needed with Lucas's injury. Great leadership shown.

McVeigh - Stood up all game and just ran his guts out. Needs to learn to keep his mouth shut, as he will lose us a game one day from it, but other than that a faultless display and BOG honours were well deserved.

Michael - Was ok but had 4 kicked on him from a player coming back from injury. Of course he fared better as we got on top of the Roos and did provide a steady head down back. Serviceable.

Nash - Solid game and again provided some great disposal to set up scoring opportunities. Tried very hard and played a solid game.

Ramanauskas - Great game from Rama and his disposal and guile helped us out of the shit many times. Another who will benefit from the game and great to have him back.

Ryder - Played a more defensive game today, so was never going to stand out, yet he did his job and did provide some rebound at various stages.

Slattery - Tried hard and did some good offensive work.

Stanton - Tagged out of it and was very poor today. Not interested in trying to work his way into the game by attempting to win a contested ball but wanted it fed to him. Worst game i think i have ever seen him play.

Watson - Great game and was in everything. As usual racked up contested possessions and probably had the most clearances of any player on the ground. Provided options and smarts around the ground and apart from that first poor kick, his disposal was good.

Still a lot to learn for this team but the confidence from this win will do us wonders.
Worked hard all day and essentially just ran North into the ground.
Need more talking and telling players when they are hot and too many flying to spoil marks, leaving their opponent free.

Great to have a win and still a lot of improvement to come.

On Stanton...last year in corresponding match Brady Rawlings destroyed Essendon getting about 45 possessions. I believe Knights identified this, started Stanton on bench as rawlings would tag, rawlings went to bench, then stanton came on in forward pocket. I was very dubious of this but it dragged rawlings out of the game and appeared to work in our favour. This gave essendon an edge in midfield as with rawlings out guys like swallow got destroyed.

Wasn't Mal playing on Edwards? I know he was in the first quarter, I think he got switched onto him after the first quarter...

Not sure I agree with you on all points, so here's what I think:

Davey - Agree with you.

Dempsey - Agree in the most part. However when we were behind nad he was under a bit more pressure some of his good decisions became very ordinary ones which hurt us on a number of occasions. Needs to be able to adapt his game for the circumstances, that should come with experience though.

Dyson - Didn't see a lot of it but was useful when he did. Needs to improve, however he tried a lot harder today than he has in the past and I can see him getting there.

Fletcher - Agree with you.

Hille - Was great today, just needed to convert another of his goals. Good stuff from him.

Houli - A bit like Dempsey, needs to improve his awareness and have a different approach when things aren't flowing greatly.

Jetta - Looked good. Did some stuff, looked like he'll only get better.

Johnson - Showed the doubters why we need player like him in the team still.

Laycock - Disappointing. Played a bit forward today given Lucas' absence and except for his one goal didn't show a lot. Needs to learn how to lead better and put in more over the game. He'll bounce back.

Lloyd - Superb. Agree with everything.

Lonergan - Good contested footy and showed why he got a place and Reimers didn't.

Lovett-Murray - I love Lovett-Murray. Great skilled and tough player, who showed how good he can be up forward when freed from the half-back.

McPhee - Ran hard, I dont think the other players used him as much as they could. If he can start getting some footy in CHF it'll help us out with Lucas down.

McVeigh - Super stuff. Agree.

Michael - Was great. The umpiring against hims was rotten and he can't be faulted for many of the goals kicked on him. Disagree with the criticism of him. Was solid and impressive down back.

Nash - Didn't get much of it and made some mistakes, but also used it well when he got it. With more of the ball he'll be more damaging.

Ramanauskas - Best he's played for years. Long may he keep this kind of form. With others in the backline making some bad choices at times he looked composed and skillful.

Ryder - I was impressed with his game. Gave his man a bit too much space on the lead a couple of times, but was otherwise impressive.

Slattery - I didn't see much of what he was doing today to be honest, so I'm not going ot comment.

Stanton - Tagged out of it but was good in flashes. Needed to work harder to get himself into the game. Made difficult (same goes for McPhee) by the run being through the middle, not out on the wings.

Watson - :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

I thought Laycock was a useful contributor particularly in the second quarter when he kicked a goal and dominated in the centre bounces. Our ruck performance won on the day (need to look at Hille and Laycock together) and North had an AA ruckman from last year.

I was confused at how North used McIntosh however !

I'm glad im not the only one who thought laycock was of value. His ruckwork was fantastic.

You know why I think Jetta, though not exactly a ball-magnet, is more at home than Houli and Dempsey... confidence. This boy is really gold, got eagerness and belief that Houli and Dempsey don't have that will make him a star. How good were the tackles that he put on and also his coolness and vision in tight passages of play.:thumbsu:

I believe on Laycock and Dyson you are both harsh and perhaps a tad blinded by past criticisms. Sitting up on Level 3, Wing you could totally see the whole ground and who was working their butts off. Every time the ball came out, Laycock chased as hard as Dean Cox although he lacked a yard of pace. Was very good today, FINALLY IN TANDEM WITH HILLE!!!:). Dyson doesn't shirk the isuue now. A couple of times when a body was needed on the line, he provided and I think that he is vital to the half-back line structure. There is a certain steeliness that I saw in his game today and he will be better for the run.

I don't know how many times I swore when Stanton either was just floating aimlessly wide of a contested situation or was just completely out of the play altogether. Although early times, he is embarrasing what the number 5 is all about. It's about guts, determination, willpower and bravery. None of which he showed yesterday. Agree with you Merv, I don't think I've ever seen him be so shy and play so badly.

Also one question, with Lucas down and Johns, Neagle, Gumbleton out of consideration... how about Lee as an option?

Could be handy

While I'm glad someone else actually opened their eyes wide enough to also see the difference in attitude in Dyson yesterday it's silly how blinkered people can still be about Stanton.

Stanton wasn't great, but he was playing a different role. He was going out wide in order to create some space through the middle on the small dome pitch for our run. I'm sure Knights wont be anywhere near as dirty on him as everyone else has been. (Except Longy, who made a decent post about Stants game on the main board).

And Johns probably isn't as far out of consideration as you might think.

I'm glad im not the only one who thought laycock was of value. His ruckwork was fantastic.

I second that.

His ruckwork was fantastic, comprehensively beat McIntosh.

In saying that he could do more around the ground but he beat his opposing ruckman convincingly.

obviously didn't read my comments re stanton. last year rawlings had 44 possessions and killed essendon. stanton was obviously instructed to stay away from the stoppages to keep rawlings away. hail super coach knights for a bold strategy.

Happy with Sam Lonergan's game. Three things he 'did' impressed me.

- The awareness to avoid the attempted hit by Wells.
- The dummy to get past two North players, when there was no room to work with.
- Then the handball that released Lovett-Murray to kick that goal. He made the initial mistake of playing on when surrounded by two North players (acting on coach's instructions to take risks) but then when realising he was going to be tackled, he held the ball tightly so that it doesn't fall from his hands, then took the impact, while freeing his hands from the tackles, then released a super handball while falling down, which resulted in a goal.

Though I think Reimers should be in the side ahead of him, I always liked the way he plays and want him in the 22.

About Stanton, I was gutted when I saw him pull out of a contest. He had the chance to put his body on the line to stop Thompson taking a mark in the goal square, but he choose to drop his head and got out of the way. That's why I didn't want the No.5 to be given to him. Everyone have their bad days or it might be some tactic for him to play badly. That's fine.

But when you haven't done anything in the game and you had the chance to do something courageous, and you do that. You don't do a bunny hop to get out of the way. Seeing that didn't sit well with me, when he is got the No.5 on.

About Rama...what can I say. I thought he will never play at his best again. But reckon I've changed my mind with that performance by him. It was fantastic to see him use his vertical leap to punch and also take a couple good grabs. Still got his accurate kicking. Fantastic to see.

There's the player who should've got the number 5 guernsey... courage and class all round.
Thought his game was terrific.

Agreed. I actually had him as my tip for the Archer Hird Medal.
